during my 30 years in chicago, i was witness to a lot shows, by a lot of bands. i would guess that between 1988 and 2003 i saw at least 400+ bands perform, and maybe attended 700 shows. whether thats a lot, i dont know? but one band that i saw more than most is dolly varden, who is a staple in the chicago scene. i dont know if they ever broke out much past the 60618, 60622, 60647, etc zip codes but stephen dawson and his band dolly varden have been a chicago constant for as long [...]

It occured to me late last night that maybe I should start doing the Graboid on Tuesdays. The only reason I had been doing it on Wednesday for so long was the simple fact that I am lazy and liked having the extra day to listen to all the new releases. There's nothing I'm super excited about this week. What do you guys think? Top Five Most Interesting New Releases: Joseph Arthur : Let's Just Be – Lots of drug references and weirdness for the sake of weirdness. The guy seems to hate the sound of his own voice, using vocal affectations on most of the songs. The whole record comes off like a late night, coke-fueled jam session. You would have had to been hiding your head in the sand for the past decade or so not to have bumped into the Chicago band Dolly Varden . Somehow that sentence above describes me. Luckily, I was introduced to their music through leader Steve Dawson's excellent solo disc Sweet Is The Anchor and now Undertow Music is about ready to introduce a whole new generation of fans to this Chicago group.
