Les Noces by Dominique Leone We wouldn't normally be writing about Stravinsky ballets, so consider our interest a testament to the creativity of local experimental pop artist Dominique Leone . Accompanied by Kanoko Nishi and Regina Schaffer on pianos, Dominique Leone has created a new recording of Igor Stravnisky's Les Noces , which Leone writes "is often considered the last great piece of Stravinsky's 'Russian' period, before the composer dove into other idioms, such as neo-classicism and 12-tone music." The group endeavored to remain faithful to [...]

Dominique Leone "I'm The Police" The chorus of "I'm The Police" ends with an admission: "I want to control the way that she feels." Leone is singing from the perspective of someone in the middle of a protracted fight with a long term partner, and he's trying to run out the clock on her anger and get back in her good graces. The thing is, he's only deluding himself into thinking that he has any control over her - he's not wrong to back away and let her be upset, but all the same, he's not being [...]

Here's the (late) line-up for this week's Bay Area shows. A few canceled shows, a few DJ sets, and a gay music festival (no really, Homo A Go Go 2009 ). Tonight, indie pop group Casiokids with Slow Club and The Wave Pictures party at the Bottom of the Hill and the Bay Area's young jazz group, The Jazztronauts hit up Yoshi's Oakland. Tuesday, folk punk rockers (think Lawrence Arms ) Cobra Skulls and The [...]
Tina Weymouth invented sexy bass playing way before Kim Deal got her hands on one and here's her demonstrating this with Talking Heads spin-off band Tom Tom Club Notice how the combination of "leg", "insane bass line" and "strobe lighting" makes one unable to stop looking at the screen. I was introduced to Tom Tom Club by a man from the Wirral; if there's one thing I've learnt on this planet it's that northerners know their fucking music. [...]

Dominique Leone "Tension" Dominique Leone's melodies tend to be rather playful and bouncy, but even when his tunes approach the manic energy of Max Tundra, his textures are slightly muted, and he sings in a way that suggests a relaxed, easygoing demeanor. This contrast is particularly effective in "Tension," a song that deals with the ritualized anxieties and predictable mood swings within an established, functional relationship. From verse to chorus and instrumental interlude, the tone of the piece bounces from distress to resignation and restlessness, but there's hardly a trace of anger or resentment. Sure, he sounds a [...]

Ting Tings - Shut up and let me go [potencial hit do cd de estréia da hypada dupla londrina. Ficou famosa nos EUA por ter virado trilha de comercial de ipod - conhecido trampolim para a notoriedade. Cadence Weapon at the Echo / photo by David Greenwald It's no secret that most rock critics are also failed musicians. Even Lester Bangs made some records . But recently, a number of Pitchfork scribes have found second careers in bona fide bands. Here, we rank them along with the no doubt conflict of interest-free scores dropped on them by the 'Fork itself. Remember, 7.0 means never having to say you're sorry. 1. Cadence Weapon Roland Pemberton III, an ousted P4ker dumped by the [...]
This list of April favorites stands in stark contrast to what I was listening to last year around this time. If I remember correctly, it was all about The Field, Gui Boratto, Pantha du Prince, and other electronic acts keeping me company as I packed for my move to Philadelphia. A year later and the songs below show a turn toward more organic sounds, mostly psychedelia and some blues. Maybe it's the change of scenery, with New York representing the minimal electronic sounds that fit its cold, stark landscape and the fact that Philly feels more in [...]
The jerky, sugar-rush rockers of Born Ruffians invite you to the farmhouse, where there are not cluster flies, alas, but there are plenty of animals at the ready to intrude upon your cooking sessions. This is where you can Like Jamie Lidell's Jim, a sort of cute opening premise takes a darker turn in Act III, but it's still cute and infectiously poppy, because that's just how Born Ruffians do. In fact you might even say it was an Animal Farm , if you were into stretching your Orwellian references. Luckily, we aren't.

For anyone who's enjoyed Dominique Leone's writing at Pitchfork over the years, it's pretty fascinating to listen to the San Francisco-based Texan's self-titled debut full-length, which follows his self-titled Feedelity EP. You can hear his beloved Brian Wilson and Harry Nilsson in the harmonies (for Nilsson, think of "Without You" and check out the first section of "Blist," parts of "Claire," or gorgeous album closer "Conversational"), his prog, elecrtro, disco, ABBA fixations elsewhere. (We tried forcing in a Scott Walker mention because his review of the The Drift was so supreme, but no dice.) [...]
We keep running into people who have heard the new My Morning Jacket, and they keep echoing the same theme: Evil Urges contains some moments that you won't recognize as My Morning Jacket; some people will love it .... others not so much. The sorta twisted Evil of the album's art plays out the pre-release tagline, but we're sure you're done basing impressions on second hand opinions, img files, and live YouTubes . So go to the source: Herein Jim James speaks with Rolling Stone about the sound and inspiration [...]
