That Game Theory's entire catalog is seemingly terminally out of print is a great travesty. Certainly they were one of the most important purveyors of '80s pop music in America. Over the course of three incredibly ambitious and almost flawless records, they had as good a track record as almost anyone besides XTC for consistency.
New Jersey. Love it or hate it there is something in the water there that makes great American rock bands. Case in point: The Smithereens - the seminal college rock band who brought us the landmark albums "Green Thoughts", "Beauty & Sadness"and "Especially For You." For three decades they've provided the melancholy (yet ripping) soundtrack to our lives. In recent times the band have released a flurry of solid cover albums taking on everyone from The Beatles to The Who, leading us to think their days of recording their own new [...]

According to Don Dixon he and wife Marti Jones have only recorded a handful of duets over the past 25 years. They solve that problem with the release of their first duets record called Living Stereo . If you came of age in the 80's then you know who both Don Dixon and Marti Jones are. If not look `em up. Purchase the new record here via Amazon. Trouble Is As Trouble Does

For 'Smithereens 2011,' their first new album of original material in 12 years, The Smithereens headed back to where it all began 31 years ago: a cramped rehearsal space in New York's East Village. "We wrote the new songs at a tiny rehearsal room on Avenue B and 6th street on the Lower East Side of NYC, this was our original rehearsal space, it's where we rehearsed and wrote all of the tunes for our 1988 Capitol release 'Green Thoughts.'" frontman Pat DiNizio told AOL [...]
I was in Chicago the weekend of 11/19 to see DJ Shadow with Pigeon John at Park West. My friend Erik came along. Before the show. We both walked out with some good finds. Here are mine: The Moody Blues - Caught Live + 5 (2 LP, London Records, 2 PS 690/1, 1977)($2.99) Kind of a controversial album in the Moodies catalog in that it was released without the band's permission. The "Live" part was a concert recorded in December, 1969 at The Royal Albert Hall during the To Our [...]

Dateline: Washington, DC 5/31/10 Vaunted performance space and nightclub, the 9:30 Club , celebrated its 30th birthday on Memorial Day with a friends and fans-only concert at the club. Having won a ticket through a lottery for members of its email list-serve, I headed down the BW Parkway to check it out. What follows is one man's account of the 13-artist, five and a hour extravaganza that followed. Call it my running diary of the show. A little background: My first trip to the [...]

DC has become my adopted city since I moved here after grad school for my first "real" job. It's a city that has its problems, but it also contains some amazing aspects as well. For a music dork like myself, at the top of this list of amazing DC elements definitely includes the 930 Club . My first experience to the 930 was at its old location, on 930 F St.,to see Paul Westerberg on his first solo tour after the Replacements in 1993. By the time I'd moved back in 2002, the [...]

Don Dixon : Praying Mantis [ purchase ] Don Dixon is a producer, best known for his work with REM, The Smithereens, and Guadalcanal Diary. His wife is Marti Jones, whose albums he produces to this day. None of this should be allowed to overshadow Dixon's talent as a bass player and songwriter. Praying Mantis comes from Dixon's debut in his own name, in 1985; the song was all over college radio that year. The praying mantis is one of the most beautiful insects. But the female has the [...]

Last night I sat among the large audience at the soldout Mountain Stage show featuring Amos Lee , Sharon Little , Peter Bradley Adams , and The SteelDrivers. NPR's radio concert series once again outdid themselves in selecting talented artists, and some of the performances were astonishingly good. I was very happy that the Mountain Stage gang returned to their home venue. I avoid The Clay Center like the plague and though the the May show with Bell X1 at the Civic Center Little Theater was certainly enjoyable, the Cultural Center [...]

Kenny Rogers: Lucille [ purchase ] When I was a kid in the 1970's, Kenny Rogers was the face of "country music," or at least that's how I remember it. A few others that come to mind are Dolly Parton, Chrystal Gale, and Willie Nelson. But The Gambler reigned supreme. Of all the corny songs from that period (and I say that in the most affectionate way possible), this one might be my favorite. It's right up there with Coward of the County . [...]

The Southeastern United States was the epicenter of jangly 80s music, in particular Georgia and North Carolina. Here are some of my favorites from the great Southeast. GEORGIA The grandfathers of jangly 80's rock, R.E.M. got their start on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens. Their first single was released on the independent Hibtone label in 1981. It included two songs that were re-recorded for release two years later on their Murmur LP. Here are the original [...]
Don Dixon: " Roommate " " ICU " (from The Entire Combustible World in One Small Room 2006. Buy / download ) Don Dixon has a long history of involvement with great southern rock music. In the 1970s, he was a member of Arrogance , probably the first of North Carolina's should-have-made-it-big bands (and mentioned in just about the first post I ever wrote , though I didn't know much about them back then). Subsequently, he produced R.E.M.'s Murmur [...]
