Every week I write praise pieces on great bands and how other great bands pay homage to them in the form of a great cover and overall musical greatness. Sure, I could continue focusing on the best of the best, but sometimes it's fun to talk about the music that never should have been made. Welcome to the sporadic and highly elusive Under Cover: WTF!? Edition . Why, you ask? More like why the fuck not !? Sometimes music journalists feel the need to report on something really horrific, whether it be the musician who refuses to fade away/burn out/go away/simply retire [...]
The '70s were indeed good to the Southern California band The Eagles. During the decade, the band racked up more than a dozen Top 40 hits, including a quartet of #1s as well as four releases which topped the album chart. 1977's Hotel California was one of the biggest albums of the period, but it brought tensions to the surface which would ultimately end the band. By 1980, the situation within The Eagles was volatile. It had taken them two years to record the follow-up to Hotel California , an almost unheard of length of [...]

Fans of the super laid-back, southern California twang of the Eagles must have gone into cardiac arrest upon hearing the first synth-blast chords of Don Henley's first solo single, "Johnny Can't Read". Teamed with new writing partner Danny Kortchmar, Henley seemed eager to leave the Eagles in the dust and update his sound and approach for the 80s. The resulting album, "I Can't Stand Still," is awash with synthesizers, mechanical percussion flourishes and hiccupy, New Wave-influenced vocals. As a young eighth-grader, I was familiar with the Eagles thanks to a worn-out copy of "Greatest Hits" my older [...]

When The Eagles broke up following 1980's The Long Run , they were arguably the most popular band in America, leaving behind a legacy of sold-out tours, awards, multi-platinum selling albums, and hit songs which have become standards. Although guitarist Glenn Frey was the first member to launch a solo career, drummer Don Henley wasn't far behind. Henley had often been Frey's co-writer in The Eagles and he had sung lead on many of the band's best-known songs including Desperado , Best Of My Love , One Of These Nights , Hotel California [...]

With the announcement on Monday that Bruce Springsteen will play the Super Bowl halftime show in Tampa, the NFL has officially exhausted its options. Not that Bruce isn't the perfect choice. He'll bust out some of his crowd-pleasers like "Born To Run," "Thunder Road" and "Glory Days" (the latter would require changing the sport of the faded high-school star in the song from baseball to football and changing the lyric to "He could throw that crossing pattern by you") and, although the show will be approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes less than the typical Boss concert, it [...]

When the four principals in the Eagles took the stage at the Scottrade Center last night, they were bedecked in dark gray suits, white dress shirts and thin black ties, all strategically loosened at the collar. The sartorial choice was a slick one – it was hard to tell if they were paying homage to Reservoir Dogs or claiming their spot as their generation's Rat Pack. It's closer to the truth to say that the quartet – Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit – looked and acted like businessmen. That's not a [...]

"There was no YouTube, no MySpace, no TMZ. In the '60s and early '70s, most artists weren't willing to 'ho' to get their fifteen minutes of fame. Peoples' lives were not an open book, their foibles not public property. We did our fair share of debauchery, but there was nobody there trying to film it." Is this the first time I sort of agree with one Mr. Don Henley ever? It very well may be! (Although the whole boomer-exceptionalist bit does, naturally, rankle more than a bit.) September will forever be associated with returning for a new school year. Realistically it is not a big deal and turning into a grown working bee also means learning to measure your holidays for maximum impact. Yet despite the fact i finished my studies years back without fail on the 31st of August i mourn [...]

So, it seems that the blog has been sorely neglected by the tight-knit cast of contributors we've got running this thang. You guys got lives or something?! That said, I'm only gonna post a video. This is the 2nd encore of the Coldplay show that I mentioned in a previous post. Btw, there was one guy in the Coldplay crew w/ the sole responsibility of triggering the ticker-tape. So you know, if you've got nothing else going for ya, maybe a career change is what you need. Just sayin . [...]

Temperatures over the weekend here in Vermont peaked at 93 degrees, with a nice dose of humidity to boot. Summer has officially returned to Vermont. I'm not a huge fan of excessive, damp heat, but warmer temperatures are always nice after a Vermont winter. Here's a handful of songs to help celebrate: In The Summertime - Mungo Jerry Boys of Summer - Don Henley Summer - Goodtimes Goodtimes [...]
Each month, I make a playlist consisting of an artist of every letter of the alphabet. This month I asked the help of several of my counterparts to help me out with suggestions. Needless to say this is a great playlist and you have no other to thank than yourself. Thanks for all the suggestions. Every song on this month's playlist either has to do with Summer or reminds us of the season. Also I've been asked to say why I picked each song so that will begin this month. This is June 2008: 1. I Write Summer [...]

Welcome back to " Tied to the 90s ", a not-very complete guide to a decade that was. I'm your host, Yostal, and once more, I'll be taking you through the pop culture landscape of the 1990s. If you have any suggestions for future columns, please email me at GoinYostal@gmail.com or leave me a comment. This week's post is perhaps the most self-indulgent effort I have ever made with Tied to the 90s, which I know is saying something. I warn you now, because, well, it's what I do. But this is [...]

Why am I starting out the new year by posting something from last year? Well, I've gotten so many requests to repost these tracks that I figured I'd give you kids what you've been asking for. Actually, I just might run through some of my other old posts and see which ones people were saddest/angriest that I took down and put those back up, too. We'll see how I'm feeling. I have a real weakness for 80s movies and one of my favorites is [...]
