This week's dose of posters makes March 14 - 20 a throwback week. Included in this week's review is a Tom Waits tribute headed by the mystical Magic City. And making his way to the Roberts Orphe... Continue reading "Tom Waits Tribute, Don Williams, and Show Flyers: March 14 - 20" >

At a Country Music Association awards show in the late 1970s, Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel showed up wearing a stetsons. He and the similarly behatted and long-haired Charlie Daniels and John Anderson were politely asked to remove their headgear. But as the rhinestones faded, the Stetson would become an obligatory sartorial item in the country fraternity. We might credit the mercifully brief Urban Cowboy movement — spearheaded by John Tavolta's Honky Tonk Night Fever movie — for popularising the cowboy hat, which had been sported by many people over the years but never was standard apparel in [...]

The traditional country stars — Conway Twitty, George Jones, Tammy Wynette Charlie Rich, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride — were still selling many records in the 1970s, and periodically crossed over to the pop charts. Singers like Donna Fargo evoked the good old days with happy songs like The Happiest Girl In The Whole USA. These were still the Opry years — in fact, in 1972 the Grand Ole Opry opened a theme park called Opryland, and wo years later moved out of its long-time home, the Ryman Theatre, to Opryland. But the Nashville scene no longer monopolised country, [...]
![[Listen] Bon Iver - "If Hollywood Don't Need You (Honey I Still Do)" (Don Williams Cover)](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3723440_lg.jpg)
We know by now that Bon Iver like to play cover songs live, and we've even had a few studio versions to indulge in, most notably would be the great Bonnie Raitt cover of " I Can't Make You Love Me ". Today courtesy of our buddies at TwentyFourBit you can enjoy the band covering the 1983 single from Don Williams, "If Hollywood Don't Need You (Honey I Still Do)". The cover may not be what you're used to from Justin Vernon and co but the cover is a great listen and a [...]
Watch Bon Iver cover Don Williams' 'If Hollywood Don't Need You (Honey I Still Do)' from a show in Nashville.
While playing at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, Bon Iver covered an old 80s country ditty from Don Williams called "If Hollywood Don't Need You (Honey I Still Do)". The band stayed largely faithful to the original recording, as they have done with their other covers . Bon Iver performing an early-802s country tune isn't very surprising, especially when it is from a concert in Nashville. What is surprising is how faithful and sincere this take on Don Williams' "If Hollywood Don't Need You (Honey I Still Do)" is, with hardly an ironic wink present. Check out the cover below, recorded during the summer at Ryman Auditorium. (Via 24Bit )

Hear Bon Iver Cover Don Williams Ever since Elliott Smith's perfectly imperfect live version of Hank Jr.'s "All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)" at Largo, I've had a soft spot for covers of early '80s country tunes. And while it's hard to beat that half-reverent take, Bon Iver made an equally unusual pick at Nashville's famed Ryman Auditorium this summer: "If Hollywood Don't Need You (Honey I Still Do)," a 1982 Don Williams hit about his lover leaving Amarillo for Tinseltown. The lyrics don't really expand beyond [...]
Gary Nicholson releases a new album from deep in the heart of Texas.

Der Mix sportet viele, viele Detroit-Klassiker, klar, und wird von Mr. Williams mit folgenden Worten beschrieben: "it's what techno felt like from 1995 to 2005 for me in Berlin." Den Mix gibt es hier. Tracklist: Millsart - With (Axis) Derrick May - To Be Or Not To Be (J.Q. Public Mix) (S3) DJ T-1000 - Track Machine (Pure Sonik) [...]

A few weeks ago, I offered a list of of artists/industry people who I think should be inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame. The post received the most response of any other that I have written so far. While many of agreed with some of my choices, others had their ideas own ideas. On Tuesday, the Hall announced the names of four new inductees, and each member of the class of 2010 was someone that was either named in the article or by LWMB's readers. Let's take a look at those that will take their [...]
Their music's pretty good, but most of all I like the one dude's meat.
Today, one of country's best relationship-phobes turns 68. Ten songs to get hooked on... but not too hooked. I don't want no clingin' vine! You're smothering me!

I've always been curious to hear what a Danny Balis song would sound like, now I know. He wasn't shittin' us when he said it would have a Don Williams sound to it. You can check it out at DC9 @ Night here .

From Larry Clark's Tulsa series Don Williams - Tulsa Time [ buy ] Something tells me that Larry Clark and Don Williams had wholly different impressions of Tulsa, Oklahoma in the 70s. In any case, here's a groover from the Gentle Giant , 1978's country single of the year.

Welcome to the eleventh edition of our series of short interviews affectionately titled Talking Shop . The majority of media and fan attention gets showered on the artists who create the music we love to listen to/DJ with/dance to, and for good reasons. But without the hard work, keen ears and business savvy of label staff, we'd be stuck only streaming tracks on Myspace . This time we delve into the workings of deep-house mavens Mojuba. Founded by Thomas Wendel, better known as DJ/producer Don Williams, Mojuba captures a dusky, Detroit-influenced style of deep and dubby house music [...]
