THE theory behind Medline's People Make the World Go Round LP is a sound one. Who wouldn't want to hear fresh life breathed into classic jazz and soul cuts by the likes of Donald Byrd and Freddie Hubbard, the sort of tracks which were sampled to death during the golden age of hip hop by the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Common and Pete Rock? And the results teeter on the edge of brilliance - when the group grab a groove by the scruff, they really grab it, and sound cooler than a frozen Blue Note record. [...]

I have an original track on a new compilation from LA's PYT Records. The compilation features some slo-mo and laid back disco cuts from some of my favorites in the game like Venice Beach and Solidisco. I'm really excited to get this new record out there, I have been sitting on it and playing it for a while. It was originally intended to be a part of my full-length record I am working on, but it just didn't seem to fit. It [...]

Donald Byrd blasted off this mortal coil earlier this month and this site was completely remiss in honoring his legacy. No excuses are worthwhile, but I will point you in the direction of Oliver Wang's Soul Sides blog, who eulogized the jazz great with abyssal depth. Go there, download those tunes, dig deeper into the catalogue of the man who was sampled by everyone from Tribe Called Quest to Dilla to Black Moon to Pete Rock. In the wake of his passing, British radio doyen, Gilles Petersen inquired at Blue Note whether a legendary 1973 performance at Montreaux [...]

When he's not collaborating with MCs like Charmingly Ghetto and Supreme Sol , 20-year-old Scottish producer Cypria appeases his fans with instrumental efforts. Yesterday, he dropped his latest, the aptly titled Sunday Soul Sessions . It's 15 tracks deep and pays homage to late jazz giant Donald Byrd, who passed away earlier this month at age 80. With that in mind, you should know what to expect here: hypnotic beats and jazzed-out loops. If you need something smooth to ease you into the work week, this is it. I never fell in love with the Foo Fighters. Sure, the band's back story is amazing and I share the rest of the world's affection for Dave Grohl. But whenever I hear one of the band's hits I wish it was just a little dirtier and bit less corporate. The Bronx have made that sound in my head a reality with their new album IV . It's precisely the sort of big, obvious anthemic rock that will always have a place of honor in my rotation. --- [...]

From Nas' "N.Y. State of Mind," A Tribe Called Quests' "Footprints," Ice Cube's "I Wanna Kill Sam" or Action Bronson's "Hookers at the Point," Donald Byrd has played a very big role in hip-hop music. With his recent passing, producers eLiMenCe and Agony teamed up to create a 6-track tribute beat tape, titled In Flight , in honor of the late great musician. The Saturday after his passing AGoNY & I went through Byrd's extensive catalog, sampling just a small fraction of it to create [...]

To commemorate Donald Byrd's passing earlier this month, Prince Language shared his excellent edit of Think Twice from the mighty Editions Disco 12"s. Dig it... --- Follow me on Twitter: twitter.com/shawnryan

Another jazz titan as died. Byrd came up with beboppers and hardboppers in the 1950s and 60s. One of my first albums was his hardbop Blue Note side, Fuego. Later came classics like the breezy san souci lp Fancy Free, New Perspective-which had the evergreen choral work Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer), and Electric Byrd, which featured Brazilian musicians like Airto on the great song "Xibaba". Always the experimenter, Byrd created the Blackbyrds in 1973, a time that acoustic jazz was having a hard time; the group was a counterpart to [...]

For the past month I have been working on processing a rather large collection of jazz records as part of my day job. It has taught me a lot about the genre, both the music contained in the grooves as well as pressing details (label variations, cover variations, engineering variations, etc.). I'm no expert, but [...]

Hard-bop trumpeter extraordinaire cum jazz-funk-fusion wizard Donald Byrd's (born Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II [Great name? Great name. Why would you shorten that?]) 1971 acid-jazz masterpiece Ethiopian Knights, featuring (among others) Harold Land on tenor sax, Bobby Hutcherson on the vibes, Joe Sample on organ, and Wilton Felder on bass: Donald Byrd: The Emperor Donald Byrd: Jamie (Sorry, the last song was too long to upload the file, so you'll have to make do with this video... Haha)

Gotta watch for the Mizell brothers credits... cop them shits. Throwback : Donald Byrd - Dominoes (don lowed) -- Throwback : Donald Byrd - Think Twice (don lowed) --

I recently went to pick up Donald Byrd's Places And Spaces album, one of my favorite fusion Jazz albums of all time. Luckily I found a second hand 123 in decent conditions at the record store down the street from my place. After listening to it a couple of times, I decided it would be more than appropriate to dedicate this week's Sample Sundays to the best track on the album, Wind Parade as it has been sampled in a bunch of very classic rap tracks. enjoy. Wind Parade - Donald Byrd [...]
