Donavon Frankenreiter is one of my favorite artists and somehow the news of his recently released album Start Livin' slipped right past me for a whole two months. But do not fret, I am here to redeem myself by sharing his care-free tunes with you. When it comes to Donavon I have come to expect at least three things. The songs are going to be happy, simple and catchy and this album is no exception to the rules. Start Livin' is an album filled with love songs about his wife and two children. Just take [...]
Thursday's things: ► Canadian rockers Young Empires play the Bootleg Bar, supported by Humans and Kiven, with the headliners having recently unleashed one of the most mind-blowing interactive videos ever. Above, is the non-interactive version of "White Doves" — dramatic enough to be sure. But if you go here and log on to see the video via Facebook , you'll see what the band, director Miles Jay, digital director Derek Blais and the design team Jam3 created. Prepare to see your Facebook photos as you've never seen them before. [...]

The calendar for free summertime concert series is rapidly filling, but there is one longtime favorite that will be conspicuously absent this year: the Also I Like to Rock shows at the Hammer Museum . Also I Like to Rock had a seven-year run of bringing live music to the Hammer courtyard every Thursday in July. This year, with the Hammer's ambitious exhibition "Made in L.A. 20123 [ preview ] dominating the institution's landscape, the museum will host DJs from KCRW-FM as vibe-setters for seven consecutive Thursday evenings beginning June 28, when KCRW music director [...]
Possessor of one of the greatest 'staches in music, surfin' folk/pop songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter is back with Start Livin', his fifth album -- and the successor to 2010's Glow -- arriving March 29. Lead track "A.I." is an exceptionally fine precursor to the full-length and heartwarming tribute to his late friend (and fellow surfer) Andy Irons. It's not surprising that the loss has had a emotional impact on Frankenreiter and theme of [...]
I tweeted earlier tonight (I hate this fucking sentence already) concerning the tabs I have open here in my nifty little browser. Because I am a blogger, it made sense to write about this. Plus, I need an excuse to close these fuckin' tabs, man. I've got a bunch of shit sitting atop. Have a gander... ** Ewan Currie's Bandcamp Dude, I've got a serious clit stiffy for this dude and his band. I've wrote about The Sheepdogs before , they've made it [...]

Surfer/Musician Donavon Frankenreiter recorded this for an all covers EP released in 2007 titled Recycled Recipes . Donavon's California-vibe somehow makes the song not sound so sad on this particular rendition. In Cover Wars, I'm never sure whether or not to include versions that feature the original recording artists, but my general rule is that if they are a supporting musician, then it's fair game. So we've got Garth Hudson (keyboardist from The Band ) with his wife Maud Hudson singing lead in a brisk tempo from their 2005 release Live at the [...]
Whether in concert, on television, or in the water, Donavon Frankenreiter is something else. A brilliant surfer, talented musician, and father, Donny is a personal hero of mine for the person that he is. No one else can chase their passions so successfully, becoming extremely successful, and enjoy themselves to the fullest along the way. [...]

When we last checked in with Ben Kweller , the singer-songwriter had recently released his fourth studio album, the country-tinged Changing Horses . The ATO recording artist , whose next album - Go Fly A Kite - is said to be a return to his pop-rock sound, has lined up a late fall club tour that includes three New York City-area performances in his former longtime adopted hometown - with a gig at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ on November 17 and an early and late show at the recently opened Rock Shop in [...]
When Donavon Frankenreiter declares "You never know what's going to happen...you never catch the same wave twice" he could be speaking of either surfing or music, both of which rank at the top of his obsessions and professions. Signed to fellow mellow-surf-rocker Jack Johnson's label for his his 2004 debut, Frankenreiter's shuffling folk/rock has gone through the paces, moving from acoustic ramblings to the soulful and bluesy full-band arrangements of his 2008 album Pass It Around with guests Ben Harper and G. Love. [...]

I first discovered Ontario-based singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn via 1987 singles collection Waiting For A Miracle, a double album set whose bright aboriginal cover art called to me from my father's record collection. Even to my untrained adolescent ears, the seventeen year songspan told a story of a potent guitarist and prolific artist who had slowly turned from sparse acoustic folk to something urban, electrified, and politicized. And though I found myself favoring the middle of the album for its contemporary, catchy pre-rock melodies and accessible yet spiritual imagery, his astute, often poignant observations [...]
