Often one to erupt on wax, the riveting Rhymefest carefully pours his prophecies over "Familiar Faces," the latest leak from his upcoming tape Dangerous: 5:18 . The result is an honest impression of societal apprehension, based around Emile's exquisite interpolation of a Gary Jules' song made famous from the unheralded cult film Donnie Darko . Whether it was Emile or the Chi-Town harbinger himself who came up with the idea to recycle is unknown, but somebody was thinking, because this the perfect example of how sampling something other than an [...]
I'm socially retarded when it comes to film. Ask Axl. I'll be at a social gathering and people will be laughing at some funny line in a legendary movie and I'll just have no idea what's going on and look around awkwardly. When I admit that I haven't seen said movie people just stare at [...]
Hey guys, a little mini-videomixtape for you by way of good friend walzac! Lot's of youtubes seem to jack up the load times, so read, then click through, and enjoy!!! Take it away walzac..... I just finished watching Donnie Darko for the one-thousandth time. So here is my Donnie Darko inspired video mixtape (aka the, They Made Me Do It VideoMixtape). I think there is a Pantera song played during the party scene, but there isn't a music video for it since Pantera disowned [...]

I'm a SciFi geek in addition to being a music nerd. I admit it with glee! That said, I can fully acknowledge the fact that a lot of science-fiction film & television is absolutely terrible. This decade has seen a lot of great science-fiction, but it's also seen the one network on TV dedicated to scifi try to distance itself by rebranding itself as 'SyFy' and devoting more time to shows about ghost hunters, Tracy Morgan pulling nasty pranks on strangers and wrestling matches. Go figure. At any rate, I've decided to focus on the positive and give [...]
The Pop Five is a series of reader-created top five lists. Today's contribution comes from Naomi R. (naomihoney) in Worcester, England:
Way back in December 2003, The Darkness were riding high upon the crest of a wave of success that stemmed from the absolutely massive success of their debut album, Permission To Land . It was only natural for the most inventive and exuberant British rockers in recent memory to release a soon-to-be classic Christmas single. In a classic FAIL, 'Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End)' got to #2 in the UK Singles Chart having been beaten by [...]
Usually, I can barely handle all the "best of the year" lists we start to see in December. This year has been especially crowded because we've reached the end of a decade, so several folks have compiled their favorite items from the past 10 years.

The Full List of Big Thoughts From A Small Mind's 2009 Reviews . The Box If you could get one million dollars for merely pushing a button once would you do it? Take a moment to really think about this question. Would you push the button if you knew that somewhere in the world one person, who you have never met, would die as a result? These questions serve as the catalyst for Richard Kelly's latest science fiction work, The Box . [...]

Missy Elliott - Teary Eyed Who would've thought that Missy Elliott had a soft side (apart from her supple rear-end)? I have only recently discovered what some might affectionately term "ghetto music." I loooove this power woman. Usually a fun hard-edge lady, with words in her songs like "I'm a pain in your rectum, I am that bitch y'all slept on," Missy here is more like early "retiree" Lauryn Hill. Which is good considering that the joy of Lauryn-Ms-get-over-yourself's world now lies in God, money and her children, not music as Sister Act part 2 would [...]
I came across this short film today by Dandy Dwarves from Cannes 2009. It's pretty sweet and haunting at the same time. There's some great subtle details and it made me realize how haunting a look of inhibited emotion can be. The video got me thinking of a great movie with a similar haunted nature - Donnie Darko. It's an exceptional and thought provoking movie worth a visit or revisit. Check the preview for Donnie Darko below and don't be misled by the trailer's attempt at selling it as a horror movie. It's not meant to scare; just [...]
Richard Jankovich is a producer from Los Angeles who goes by the name Pocket . He is also the front man of electronic pop outfit the Burnside Project who have put out two excellent albums; 2003's The Network, The Streams, The Harmonies and 2005's The Finest Example is You. Under the Pocket name, Jankovich has has remixed Beck, Radiohead, Kristin Hersh, Of Montreal, Elk City, Joanna Newsom, Mendoza Line, Dirty on Purpose, Eskobar, Cat Power and others, always with groovy results.

Besides Donnie Darko being an amazing movie, it has an epic soundtrack. All the songs are 80's classics, but you can tell the director, Richard Kelly, handpicked each one of them. Every single song adds to the movie's eerie atmosphere, from Echo & the Bunnymen's The Killing Moon to Tears for Fears' Head Over Heels . But of course, the song Donnie Darko is most known for is Gary Jules' Tears for Fears cover, Mad World . It sums up all of the other songs into one haunting and beautiful tune. If you haven't seen the [...]

Ben Lee - Ben Lee (The Ataris cover) Gary Jules - Mad World (Tears for Fears cover) Youth Group - Forever Young (Alphaville cover) Rufus Wainwright - Smile (Brian Wilson cover)
by marissa bea Often lost in the shadow of the Met and the MoMA, the Brooklyn Museum , bless their heart, puts on some thought-provoking and seriously meaningful shows. So when I found my way to the back corner of the 4th floor, I was more than happily surprised to see the wonderful works of Hernan Bas greet me. The 38 pieces all come from the Rubell Family Collection and Bas confirms all that is good [...]
I stopped posting about American Idol here years ago, mostly because they obviously don't need my support to gain viewers and partly because I've been mostly bored by the show since the Jennifer Hudson days. But I must admit to liking Adam Lambert - his cover of "Mad World" last week was taken from the Gary Jules version on the Donnie Darko soundtrack . Though I'm not into Kris Allen as much, I was excited that he chose to sing "Falling Slowly" last night. For those that aren't familiar with the song, [...]

M83's Anthony Gonzalez talks about how being a teenager and 80's movies influence his music on the record Saturdays=Youth . "Graveyard Girl:" "You Appearing:" "Couleurs:" "We Own The Sky:"
Isn't it funny how pop-culture has become so focused on the interests of kids under the age of 18 because they can convince their parents to buy them stuff? I mean, surely the phenomenon of companies marketing to minors has been going on for years. Thinking back, I realize that stuff was clearly being marketed to me and lots of that marketing was happening through television. It's probably common knowledge that kids see stuff on TV and then they want it, right? Well, now there's the Internet, and I think marketing to kids has grown even stronger. I don't quite [...]
