According to Wikipedia, the modern holiday standard "This Christmas" has been covered on record no less than thirty times, and it's getting ever more popular: five of those recordings are from this Christmas season. Everyone from Diana Ross, to Chicago, to now, CeeLo Green, has made their own rendition. Green, like others before him, does a fine job with this [...]
Call me a softy all you want, but I have a special fondness for Christmas music; I always look forward to spinning seasonal LP's by The Beach Boys, Willie Nelson, The Supremes, Temptations, Vince Guaraldi, and of course the Phil Spector collection while trimming the tree, cooking meals and opening prezzies with the wife. There's a handful of Xmas 45's that get yearly spins as well; here's a few favorites- some well known, most too obscure than they deserve to be. One area that wasn't explored very deeply by US [...]

Soul music is undeniably sweet. Wether you're heartbroken or recently in love, pensive or lighthearted, angry or sad, soul music can articulate the human emotion in such an elegant way. One of the most powerful and influential permutation of music, today you can find traces and remnants of soul is most every genre, from house to instrumental hip-hop. Depending on what part of the country you're in, it may or may not be winter yet. In California, rain clouds have been ubiquitous for the past few weeks, a welcome sign of change. This Friday, enjoy five classic soul [...]

A constant reminder of what we have is perfectly fine, as long as that reminder is acknowledged in a way of praise. Whether it's in an inward or outward manner, sometimes being thankful is less expressive and more loving unto oneself. That's something that I've learned a lot about within the last month. Today is a day where we celebrate our place in life, and in an attempt to remain present, we surround ourselves with people who force us to do so. This is a beautiful thing. Last night I found out that another friend and serious force [...]

Sometimes, it's just easier to let a press release do the talking. Especially on a slow Saturday morning. So rather than try and come up with some mildly interesting words, I'm just going to copy and paste some from The Nextmen, talking about their rather lovely new EP with Fat Freddy's Drop frontman Dallas Tamaira (aka Joe Dukie). Lazy? Yes. No other word for it. But just believe me when I say you should just download this. Here's why. "Many releases in the modern Soul [...]
Both Buck Owens and Donny Hathaway are considered icons in their field. These releases show why. Live albums function to document a special time and place -- a concert that captures the essence of the performers and the electricity of the crowd. Usually they are released soon after the performance, as sort of souvenirs for those who attended or wish they had attended the show. In recent years, this has been taken this to the nth degree, from bands like Pearl Jam selling authorized bootlegs of every night of their tour...

It is one of the defining LPs of the early 1970s, and for me one of the go-to albums, perhaps the go-to album, if I do not know what else to play. By the time Carole King released Tapestry she already was a veteran in the music business, having been a teenage songwriter for Aldon Music at 1650 Broadway (and the subject of Neil Sedaka’s hit Oh Carol; she responded with an answer record titled Oh Neil). She was 18 when she had her first #1 as a songwriter, with The Shirelles’ version of [...]

One of our favorite singers anywhere right now turns in a spare (backed only by bass guitar) cover of one of our favorite songs ever, Donny Hathaway's "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know". Spoiler Alert: It's awesome. Delilah ( Facebook ) Rating 8.8

The new year always brings massive periods of reflection for me. Not only do we all start a new chapter, but I have a January birthday, so I’m looking ahead and acknowledging my past simultaneously. I assess where I want to be, areas of life to improve and lessons to keep in my back pocket. I’ve always been an extremely deep thinker, and music significantly marks and highlights different seasons on my life. Blind I is making some exciting changes this year and it’s beginning with revamping the way we approach our compilations. I [...]

December’s headline death probably is that of the great Cesária Évora , who emerged from the tiny West African island of Cape Verde, a former Portuguese colony. But as a soul fan, percussion maestro Ralph MacDonald is my headline departure of the month. He wrote some stone-cold classics and appeared on an impressive catalogue of soul and fusion albums, including those released in their heyday by Bill Withers, George Benson, Donny Hathaway, Ashford & Simpson, Brothers Johnson, Margie Joseph, Patti Austin, Grover Washington, Maynard Ferguson, The Crusaders, Michael Franks, Eric Gale, Bob James, Herbie Mann, [...]
After years of coming through many of the same venues, Connecticut-bred guitarists Tim Palmieri of Kung Fu and Jeff Gitleman of The Stepkids collaborated for the first time on Friday night at Toad's Place in New Haven, where their two bands shared a bill with fellow Nutmeg State products Rizzo's Dilemma and Wyllys. For the show's encore, Gittleman and band mate Dan Edinberg joined Kung Fu and their guest for the evening, Jennifer Hartswick , on a cover of Donny Hathaway's This Christmas... Kung Fu w/ Hartswick, [...]

It's been a while since we did a Blind I staff compilation. These are always a joy to put together, because we all take our time hand-picking the music. Only the person who zips it up (in this case it was me) gets to listen to the compilation in its entirety before it gets posted so it remains a mystery for most of the staff until it's complete. We definitely bring our different flavors and styles to Blind I for the Winter . There are some upbeat songs, but overall it has [...]

It's been out for more than a week, but I still haven't gotten around to listening to Amy Winehouse's Lioness: Hidden Treasures , which debuted this week on Billboard's Top 200 album chart at No. 5, with 144,000 copies sold in its first week. Why the delayed reaction to "new" music from such a great singer? It's just hard for me to get into posthumous albums. I've never listened to one that impressed me much. I prefer to remember my icons the way they were, not via outtakes cobbled together for one final cash-in, or as [...]
One of the all time classic Christmas pop songs. As I was playing this I listened to the lyrics closer then I had ever paid attention to them, and realized that this song has the perfect sentiment for this time of year. Makes me feel all warm inside. LOL
There are many versions of "This Christmas" and here is my favorite. This song is also available here .

It's difficult imagining Amy Winehouse's Back To Black gem "Tears Dry On Their Own" as ever having existed without that joyful "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" sample, but as revealed by its inclusion on her posthumous collection Lioness: Hidden Treasures , what would eventually become one of the singer's most fan-favorited releases didn't initially start off with such a strong Motown connection. Originally composed as more of a vintage-styled jazz-pop ballad, this early incarnation of "Tears" doesn't reach the same hope-filled anthemic peaks so infectiously grasped in the [...]
Outside of any commercial influences and negative aspects associated with the holiday season, fact still remains this time of the year will forever be my favorite for nothing else other [...]
Listen to what may be the last cover we ever hear from Amy Winehouse: Leon Russell/Donny Hathaway's 'A Song for You,' which literally reduces her to tears.
