Music surrounds us, all day every day, and with the amount of music being released, it's easy to miss great tracks. We've put together a selection of songs that have been in the audiosphere for a few years now, but seemingly haven't garnered the attention that they deserved. So whether or not you've already heard these songs or overlooked them, they are well worth the listen. By Desiree Autobee *Tracks and year(s) released are as follows. Local indie group Turning Violet Violet play Kung Fu Necktie tonight. The Key Studio Session alums carve out chamber alt-rock songs on the fringe of art-rock that seem bathed in a purple glow, though that might just be residual effects of their band name. Either way, the songs on Turning Violet Violet's debut full-length Double ... Continue reading

![Top 50 Songs of 2012 :: [40-31]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4689273_lg.jpg)
Welcome to our annual countdown of the 50 best songs of the calendar year . Songs must be from an EP, LP or demo released during 2012 and no band may appear twice. Today, we count down 40 to 31. 40. Howth - "Secret Goldmine" Howth, all rich with horns and moral victories offered the outlines of a clandestine financial reserve on glittering single, "Secret Goldmine". A down-stroke guitar and drums cribbed from the National's catalog, "Secret Goldmine" was an unrequited [...]

This CMJ, we were lucky enough to work with personal audio company Beacon Audio . With their support, we threw one hell of a party that featured High Highs , Body Language , Devin , The Echo Friendly , Night Panther , Donora , and Opossom . Though we gave away free headphones and speakers during the show, we ended up with three extra pairs of their limited edition Orions . Those pairs, which were signed by all the bands that played the party, are now being given [...]

Photo Credit: Alex Munro Last night, The Wild Honey Pie and Lip Synch Music took over Bar Matchless for an amazing night of music at our annual CMJ Beehive party. From the danceable jams of Body Language to the playful vocals of Donoroa , each band brought their A-game and gave us one hell of a show. A special thanks to Beacon Audio for sponsoring the event and giving us some stellar headphones/speakers to give away! BODY LANGUAGE [...]

It's just about that time again. A time when, for a span of five days in October each year, New York City sees an influx of bands matched only by Austin, Texas music festival SXSW. College Music Journal may be largely irrelevant as an online source for new music, but as far as New York music festivals go, there is none better than CMJ. On Thursday, October 18, we are teaming up with sync licensing company Lip Sync Music and taking over Bar Matchless in Greenpoint, Brooklyn for our third ever The Beehive [...]

It's funny how our music tastes change. Not just with age, which is the obvious one, but even within a space of time as short as a couple of weeks - or even literally overnight. Don't worry, dear reader, I'll get round to recommending some music in a few paragraphs' time. For now this blog post is going to be a little more personal than usual - but hey, blogs are meant to be personal, right? I first downloaded 'Oblivion' by Grimes back in, I think, October, and thought it was a pretty good song. [...]

Filed under: Video of the Day Artist: Donora Video: "And Then the Girls" Highlight: "For this video, we wanted to do something really fun and joyful and colorful. We also knew we wanted to incorporate roller skating somehow in the video, so we scoured YouTube for some inspiration," singer Casey Hanner tells Spinner. "That's how we came across Joey Pagan's videos. He considers what he does 'roller dancing' and his style was perfect for what we were looking for. We had also [...]

Sunless 97 Body Weather is the dreamily pleasant song from this London trio which spends four minutes courting us with beautiful synths and vocals before sealing the deal with a Ridiculous Saxophone Solo. I blame M83. Opossum The debut single from this New Zealand band sounds like Beck collaborating with Air. Featuring the talents of Bic Runga and a former member of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Blue Meanies is a funky phosphorescent psychedelic jam. BLUE MEANIES by [...]

So we typically toss a video onto a post when highlighting a new band or a show preview or something and let you draw your own conclusion about it. Sometimes we throw a change-up... strike that - let’s call it a round up. Most of these videos are of bands we have previously talked about here on Draw Us Lines, so we won’t be telling you much about those bands themselves, just some musings that really aren’t worth a damn. If a picture is worth 1000 words, then a video must be worth a million. Hold on to your hats! [...]
Monday, April 30, 2012 Today's Quick Mention: I get to see The Avengers tonight. I'm really excited. Anyone been lucky enough to catch it yet? I've heard nothing but great things. Tunes assemble! Enjoy. : Ty Segall Band - Wave Goodbye : I'm really beginning to think there won't be a moment in 2012 without something that doesn't have Ty Segall's name attached to it. The guy is everywhere these days. [...]
Cultural critique these days can feel a bit like form meeting function. "Society has gotten too loud," you scream, predictably, into some digital megaphone. "Things have gotten too fractous," you note, obliquely, in between attention-deficit monitoring of multiple social networks. "No one has time for big ideas anymore", you trail off; people are done listening and you have no useful second
Donora 's second album, Boyfriends and Girlfriends , is influenced by a slew of time periods from the American songbook, from 60s girl-groups to early 90s rock. The band's latest video for "And Then The Girls" borrows heavily from late 70s/early 80s dance pop, so it's appropriate that it opens up with some old school clips of folks showing off some serious roller disco moves. The song's grooves work in perfect time with the skaters' and the retro flourishes don't end there. Neon color swatches flash across the screen before lead singer Casey Hanner appears [...]

Pittsburgh's Donora released a new 80s retro video for their charming song And Then The Girls . The video features everybody's favorite pre-driver's license activity back in the day, skating at the roller rink. The video was direct by Ben Tabas and can be found below. The album Boyfriends, Girlfriends is available everywhere through Rostrum Records. MP3 : Donora - And Then The Girls

Donora releases the new disco rollerskate era inspired video for, “And Then The Girls.” Directed by Ben Tabas the video takes it pretty far back stylistically, but the sound is full circle. Grab Boyfriends, Girlfriends released in 2011 on iTunes . VIA
