We also knew we wanted to incorporate roller skating somehow in the video, so we scoured YouTube for some inspiration," singer Casey Hanner tells Spinner. "That's how we came across Joey Pagan's videos. He considers what he does 'roller dancing' and his style was perfect for what we were looking for. We had also [...]

Sunless 97 Body Weather is the dreamily pleasant song from this London trio which spends four minutes courting us with beautiful synths and vocals before sealing the deal with a Ridiculous Saxophone Solo. I blame M83. Opossum The debut single from this New Zealand band sounds like Beck collaborating with Air. Featuring the talents of Bic Runga and a former member of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Blue Meanies is a funky phosphorescent psychedelic jam. BLUE MEANIES by [...]

So we typically toss a video onto a post when highlighting a new band or a show preview or something and let you draw your own conclusion about it. Sometimes we throw a change-up... strike that - let's call it a round up. Most of these videos are of bands we have previously talked about here on Draw Us Lines, so we won't be telling you much about those bands themselves, just some musings that really aren't worth a damn. If a picture is worth 1000 words, then a video must be worth a million. Hold on to your hats! [...]
Monday, April 30, 2012 Today's Quick Mention: I get to see The Avengers tonight. I'm really excited. Anyone been lucky enough to catch it yet? I've heard nothing but great things. Tunes assemble! Enjoy. : Ty Segall Band - Wave Goodbye : I'm really beginning to think there won't be a moment in 2012 without something that doesn't have Ty Segall's name attached to it. The guy is everywhere these days. [...]
Cultural critique these days can feel a bit like form meeting function. "Society has gotten too loud," you scream, predictably, into some digital megaphone. "Things have gotten too fractous," you note, obliquely, in between attention-deficit monitoring of multiple social networks. "No one has time for big ideas anymore", you trail off; people are done listening and you have no useful second
Donora 's second album, Boyfriends and Girlfriends , is influenced by a slew of time periods from the American songbook, from 60s girl-groups to early 90s rock. The band's latest video for "And Then The Girls" borrows heavily from late 70s/early 80s dance pop, so it's appropriate that it opens up with some old school clips of folks showing off some serious roller disco moves. The song's grooves work in perfect time with the skaters' and the retro flourishes don't end there. Neon color swatches flash across the screen before lead singer Casey Hanner appears [...]

Donora releases the new disco rollerskate era inspired video for, "And Then The Girls." Directed by Ben Tabas the video takes it pretty far back stylistically, but the sound is full circle. Grab Boyfriends, Girlfriends released in 2011 on iTunes . VIA

Williamsburg's Cameo Gallery - one of Brooklyn's odder spaces, accessible only through the back of the Lovin' Cup cafe - hosted Dawn Landes on April 14, but for me the real story was in first-opener Donora . The Pittsburgh trio turned up the reverb and gave every 80s baby ample reason to rock out that night. Powered by a bass and guitar sound that'd be at home on a Cranberries record (or Wish -era Cure), the group worked through a good deal of their 2011 release, Boyfriends and Girlfriends [...]

Words by Brendan and Jim We're so goddamn lucky to live in a city that's boiling over with good local music. It's crazy. And we're only talking about the indie music scene, which means there's even more genres of local music out there for your listening pleasure. Crazy, amiright? 2011 was an intense year for local releases, as you're about to see. It seemed like every other weekend there was a CD Release going down at Brillbox or Club Cafe or The Shop. We tried to get to as many as possible, we swear! [...]

It's that time of year to look back on the past 12 months and say "what the hell happened to the last 12 months?!". It's also that time of year where us music bloggers and self-proclaimed critics take the time to put together some Best Of lists for your reading pleasure. They don't really mean a whole lot and you can love 'em or leave 'em, but it seems like the right thing to do to sum up the year in preparation of the next. This year we're featuring personal lists from all of our fantastic writers. [...]

Hey. How's it going? Good, great. So, yeah, you might be new here. Maybe you're a freshman at Pitt or CMU or somewhere else. That's terrific and we applaud your good choice in city. You're like a goddamn pearl diver, ready to take the plunge and come up for air with a little bit of treasure. Well, we're here to help you with that whole situation. It could definitely seem like a staggering endeavor. We understand. We went through it [...]

Words by Brendan Artist: Donora Album: Boyfriends, Girlfriends Released: September 27, 2011 Label: Rostrum Records I've been thinking a lot about this album over the last couple of weeks, listening to it straight through or putting certain songs on repeat, dissecting lyrics and moods, yadda yadda yadda. The problem is this: I've forgotten to have fun . Not always, mind you. I did throw a mini dance party in my apartment the other day when "Mancini's Dance Hall" came [...]
