Tweet Part One: Michael Tapscott 1. Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (DefJam) Kanye West - 'Runaway' The most controversial and real public figure almost caused a fist fight between Joshua and I at this year's Thanksgiving. While Josh contended, correctly so, that Kanye's public persona ruins his art, I contended, also correctly, that it heightens his palette and that the persona is in and of itself a fine work of art. We worked it out, but [...]

While the Donaldson half of Skygreen Leopards explores his inner new wave hero with The Art Museums, Donovan continues to strip back the Leopards' psych-folk to its bare essentials on his latest album with the 13th Month. Your Wicked Man picks up just where Quinn left off with the first DQ & 13 album; rooted in a world-weary, tattered songwriting that's streaked with gray clouds and late fall wood smoke. There's a classic country charm in the songwriting and production that balances nicely with the late 60's folksinger lilt that constantly hangs in Quinn's voice. This counterbalance gives [...]

Sandwitches - "Grey Wizard" Secret Seven Records recently released In a Cloud , a compilation of 14 unreleased tracks from some of San Francisco's best up-and-coming talent. The catch? It's a limited vinyl release with only 500 copies. But something tells me this thing will make its way into digital format sooner or later. You can order it online over yonder . Side One: Sonny & The Sunsets – "Heart Of Sadness" Fresh & Onlys – "You Owe Your Life To The [...]

Donovan Quinn is a singer-songwriter from San Francisco, possibly better known to readers of this blog as one half of The Skygreen Leopards (along with Glenn Donaldson). Quinn has released a couple of enchanting 'solo' albums, 2007's 'October Lanterns' and 2008's 'Donovan Quinn & the 13th Month'. The son of Dave Carter, from the legendary 60's psychedelic rock group Country Weather and named after Donovan Leitch, Quinn began writing songs at a young age. 2001 saw the release of the first Skygreen Leopards CD-R, with whom he has since released several records. [...]

There's a great local lineup at Cafe du Nord this Saturday, Nov. 29 that will help you get through the post-Thanksgiving lull - Palms (i.e. Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs from The Finches), Skygreen Leopards and Dame Satan . We're not sure exactly what Palms has been up to since she took her project down to LA a few months ago, but we like what we hear so far: Download audio file (palms-natural-history.mp3) Palms [...]

Donovan Quinn & The 13th Month S/T (09.2008, Soft Abuse) Verdict = An unassuming gem Donovan Quinn, one half of The Skygreen Leopards, has spent a long time with bandmate Glenn Donaldson developing a sound that feels perfectly underdeveloped. So, it is no surprise that Quinn's solo outing (with 'The 13th Month') finds him conjuring the same loose feel. Everything is headed by Mr. Quinn himself, but, as the title suggests, he's got some friends in tow. Marketing material seemed fairly eager to announce contributing hands Karl Bauer (Axolotl *!*) and Jason Quever (Papercuts), however, all of the [...]
Have you recently spilt with someone and need a soundtrack match your turmoil ? Are you still bitter about some past relationship and need to get it all out of your system? Maybe a fuck you to someone who may have broken your heart somewhere along the line and you are now ready to move on or perhaps you just want a perfect album to see in the Autumn and let it be those now long forgotten summer days that you heap these words upon? Then perhaps Donovan Quinns debut solo effort may just be the [...]

Donovan Quinn is a musician out of San Francisco, California. He takes influences from Dylan, The Fall etc. I would say he has a folk sound to him (surprise?) and perhaps Americana. I first would like to point out, sometimes I get an album too early before the actual release date. Sometimes I choose to respect these release dates, other times not so much. It all depends on the preference of the artist, in this case I got Donovan Quinn and The 13 month's self titled disc almost 2 months early. You can call this ample time [...]

Quinn's second record under his own name leaves him close to his work with both Skygreen Leopards and Verdure but at the same time striking out in a more melancholic and solitary vein than either. This is a pure bummer psych record in the best of terms, but with just a touch of the setting sunlight that dappled the Leopards' meadow. This has been said to be Quinn's breakup record and the lyrical themes hint at such, but as usual he has a way of wrapping sorrow up in a surreal coat of colors; sad and slightly tattered but utterly [...]

Taylor Altman Swimming Back (Sunnyoutside, Aug. 28th, 2008) "Whenever grownups talk, it's always about nothing but always urgently important, ans then the laughter goes up in the little sparks that shimmer and fade." from "Fireworks" Swimming Back is a story of youth and loss, the loss of a father and the loss of childhood. Filled with images of growing up on the East Coast, the [...]
It took three or four listens, but the charms of Donovan Quinn's new record grew each time. The melodies are strong in composition but doggedly low-key in delivery, hiding in rich, aching, sweater-warm arrangements. They require close listening, at least until you've got yourself familiar, but the payoff feels especially sweet in the age of music oversaturation, when dozens of songs whiz by a day
In effort to raise awareness about upcoming releases as well as finding a place for the numerous submissions we get, this post continues our weekly purging of free and legal MP3's for your listening enjoyment.
