Filed under: What's That Song? 'Sunshine Superman,' by HUM The "sunshine" song in the snowy Honda commercial strikes an incongruous chord as the car four-wheel-drives through an animated winter wonderland. But 'Sunshine Superman,' originally recorded by Donovan , struck a stranger chord back in 1966 as one of the first overtly psychedelic radio hits, hitting No. 1 US and No. 2 in his native UK. For this commercial, the ad agency bought the publishing rights only and recorded a modernized and sterilized version with the commercial music [...]

Castledoor frontman Nate Cole says the remaining members of the L.A. pop band need to time to figure out what's next in the wake of the departure of Gabe and Coury Combs. "We're working out the next steps and considering the options," he says. At the band's final show as a six-piece Monday at Spaceland, Cole and crew weren't overly emotional — it was merely typically big, earnest Castledoor pop. And in a way, it won't be the last fans hear of Castledoor in that incarnation: The group is finishing mixes on a new five-song digital EP, "Flashlight," that [...]

I was browsing through my music when I saw my Donovan folder. Somehow he seemed perfect for today. This is from 1967's Universal Soldier. MP3 File yousendit

Stacks apologizes for not keeping to its regular every-Wednesday schedule. We'd use yesterday's blizzard as an excuse, except we were actually among the lucky one's who never lost power during either of these immense storms. Anyways, a day late, but hopefully not a dollar short. This week's edition is a bit of audible. I had another, perhaps more prescient, post ready to go in which I was to begin my crusade to get the Electric Light Orchestra to play next year's Super Bowl halftime show. We'll definitely get to ELO down the line, but I think [...]

I have been sitting here listening to one Donovan song one after another. It just feels like a Donovan sort of a day. MP3 File yousendit
It is obvious to me that Nicholas Cage has set out to star in the worst movie in 2010. Of this, I have no doubt. My only question, is in which of these two movies will he succeed? One gets the automatic Bruckheimer bump, while the other scores bonus points for scarring a once awesome Donovan song title....you, my 15 blog readers, be the judge...vote in the comment section: Horrible soon to be released Nicholas Cage movie #1: Horrible soon to be released [...]

After touring with Vitalic during October and November the boys of Donovan are back with a new sweet lollipop for Arnaud Rebotini (one half of Blackstrobe) and his French disaster Un Cheval d'Orgueil , that will be dropped on Rebotini's Music component Rev2 -album. Tonight you can smell the cracker by loading, playing and melting away with techno-track par excellence. Mp3: Arnaud Rebotini - Un Cheval d'Orgueil (revised by Donovan)
After touring with Vitalic in October and November here's some news, the latest remix from Donovan , It's out on the Rebotini' s Music component Rev2 Album . "A track that makes my ears bleed and replaces the brain mass with ultimate joy by that fat bass, holy crap what a tune!" - Jens Rasmussen would have said. Arnaud Rebotini - Un Cheval D'Orgueil (revised by Donovan) ( buy )
Few moments ago this new remix rushed into our house. It`ll be on "Music component Rev2", the new album of Arnaud Rebotini `s latest solo project. Release on citizen records! Arnaud Rebotini? He`s one head of Black Strobe who also became famousfor collaborations with Depeche Mode, Tiefschwarz or the Hacker! So thanks Donovan for this track here, a bit too progressive for my taste, but I´m sure some of you like it! Alex Metric is back with the 'It Starts' EP a five star four track long indie rad-a-thon. 'It Starts' is a choppy number for all the kids and the boppers with a most infectious chorus, easy to let the hair down and a little flashdance action. Other hits are the robot-rock-esque thud drum 'Discotron' , 'Gusto' the slightly more devious lick and of course the Evil Nine Remix of the title track 'It Starts' with plenty of flow and kick. Alex Metric - It Starts (Evil Nine Remix) ysi [...]

What does art and music tell you? Maybe about the romance and passion of the creators world? The inside. If they feel too much, and get rich, artists are considered geniuses. but if they feel too much and stay poor they are oddities, strange, or sometimes crazy. At least until they die, and then sometimes they are geniuses after all, just depends on whos buying. I mean, piss yourself in the park, and you'll likely be locked up. Piss yourself on stage and you're just suffering for your art, as longs as someones there to pay for it. So what? [...]

To play catch up from last week's missed mix, I'm giving you two once again. They're timely with their themes, the first being all German artists and the second being songs about war. In fact, in many ways these two themes are inextricably linked. As everyone celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall coming down, it inevitably brings Berlin's extraordinary history, along with Germany's more generally, back into the spotlight. And Cold War is war after all. I've written about how much I love Berlin here before, and it still remains one of my top cities [...]

Donovan: The Voyage of the Moon [ purchase ] "The Voyage of the Moon" comes from H.M.S. Donovan , a whimsical children's album Donovan released in 1971. Many of the songs were poems by the likes of Lewis Carroll, Yeats, and others that Donovan set music to, but this one is all Donovan. It's hard to imagine too many kids listening to his quaint English fairytales today, but as an adult, I am mesmerized by this beautiful song.
