Vattnet Viskar's home in cold and wooded New England provided a clear influence on their bleak and doomy self-titled debut EP, which features slow drones that darkly express emotions of loss and despair. Put another way: If Robert Frost had been born about 100 years later and was into metal, this would be his favorite band. The EP will be released to the poor, tired, huddled masses via Broken Limbs Recording s on March 15, but until then we can satiate your appetite for gloom with this brand-new track, "Barren Earth". And, to get even [...]

It's good to be the king. Dismal Hollow, the second album by northern Virginia's King Giant, was met with much fanfare from loyal followers when it was released last month on the band's own Graveyard Hill Records. And rightfully so. The eight tracks of southern-infused mountain metal are bound to be on plenty of top-10 lists this year, including mine. I'm a native from the hills and hollows of rural Appalachia - and a huge southern-metal fan - so this record has a special place in my heart. Down on Dismal Hollow (yes, there are such [...]
This 10-minute monster is a track from the new Pharaoh Overlord album, Lunar Jetman . It's out now via Sige . "Rodente" comes on slow with a simple beat and dark bassline, but it eventually swells into an acid trip of guitar leads of all shapes, sizes, and colors. From high-pitched to heavy as hell, it's all here.

On french doom band Monarch! 's February 28 release, Omens , the eardrum-bursting walls of fuzz and drone are served up on a (grimly unpolished) silver platter. Monarch recorded this, their sixth album, in four different countries before having it mixed by Sanford Parker and mastered by Collin Jordan (Twilight, Ministry, Yob). The album also features newest Monarch! member Rob Shaffer (Dark Castle, YOB), adding another delightfully unsettling element to the band's repertoire. To enter to win your own copy of Omens , tell us in the comments below why you enjoy drone/doom/sludge music. The contest will end [...]
Beyond Black Sabbath, traditional doom puts me to sleep. My interest in the bleak arts is only piqued by the extraordinary; Pallbearer are precisely that. Sorrow and Extinction is a phenomenal, unique and irresistible articulation of dysphoria. Enshrouding these mesmerizing riffs and exceptional vocals, however, is an umbra of triumph. Sorrow and Extinction transcends mere ...
It's been a little over two years since Rammstein last came and conquered London - and setting the an early benchmark for "Gig Of The Year" in the process. Tonight they are back at a bigger venue - with rumours of an even bigger stage show. Our man Amit Sharma thought he'd head down and see if they really could top that performance he caught last time round. Or at the very least, to see if he could get "spunked" on. [...]
Teasing toward its 6th full-length album, De Vermis Mysteriis , which is dropping on April 3, High On Fire has released a new track titled "Fertile Green." The album will be released through eOne. Though I don't want to assume greatness for an album before I even hear it, I can say I'm going to enjoy this upcoming High On Fire album a lot more than 20102s Snakes For the Divine if the whole thing sounds like this. Snakes was a slight departure in the brand of heaviness High On Fire usually brings [...]

Madlib released a remix to a DOOM vs Jadakiss track yesterday off of his "Madlib Medicine Show #13: Black Tape". This remix is too dope, the beats and DOOM's flow are a thing of beauty together and then Jadakiss comes in the second half and just makes it even better. Give a listen to Madlib's latest below...
Daniel Dumile aka MF DOOM is back! He dropped the 'MF' and joined forces with Jneiro Jarel to release a new album named 'KEY TO THE KUFFS' on Lex Records. I love the first track 'Banished' which you can stream below and I'm excited to hear the whole album as I'm a huge fan of [...]
DOOM and Jadakiss spitting verses over Madlib beats? Count us in. This cut will land on Lib's 13 installment of Madlib Medicine Show , Black Tape . Apparently, this one has been delayed for quite a bit, as the cover was tough to get a printer to make due to its pornographic nature. "Mutant porn," is what Stones Throw is calling it. Finally, some juicy back story for this relatively stagnant, dragged out music series. Madlib Medicine Show No. 13: Black Tape is due out March 1. Hit the [...]

Madlib is super ill, if you don't know that yet, then you're just stupid. Stones Throw released some info on Madlib's forthcoming Medicine Show No. 13, which is dubbed The Black Tape. The tape's been on delay because nobody would print the "Mutant Porn" cover... until now. The tape is supposed to drop March 1st, and you can head over to Stones Throw to get the full update. Below is Madlib's "Doom Vs. Jadakiss" mix for your listening pleasure. Madlib Remix: Doom vs Jadakiss by Rappcats

Stones Throw: Months ago when we dropped a hint that one more Madlib Medicine Show was to come, little did we know that the Madlib Invazion label would find itself dealing with the problem of one printing press after the next refusing to run the artwork. Some who have seen this artwork describe it as "mutant porn." Others simply shake their heads, set it down, wash their hands. Now that an offshore press specializing in "fringe adult publications" has taken the job, the 'secret Medicine Show' will finally be released on March 1st. A few [...]

MP3 Pallbearer is one of doom metal's newest faces, and was recently turned onto them by NPR Music . You can actually stream the band's debut studio album, Sorrow and Extinction , right here . Though I continually catch flak for enjoying metal-from both fans and haters of the genre-it's a drug I just can't quit. Sorry, y'all. I'm passionate about the stuff, so you can imagine how distraught I was to find that my favorite albums of 2011 list was almost devoid of anything from the world of doom metal. [...]
