Here's one slated for a mixtape I've been woodshedding the past month, Dorothy Ashby's "Soul Vibrations" - the first track off her 1968 LP, Afro-Harping. Fuseless, the track explodes right out of the gate. Propelled by a funky bottom comprised of an unrelenting bassline and syncopated percussion, within seconds otherworldly theremin and flutes drop in, [...]

"The word arse is as much god as the word face. It must be so, otherwise you cut off your god at the waist." List of songs about or related to body parts. More textural than literal, onomatopoeia, gesture and touch. Blues, jazz and some Lord Quas for the heads. + Townes Van Zandt - Lungs (Townes Van Zandt, 1969) + Dorothy Ashby - The Moving Finger (The Rubaiyat Of Dorothy Ashby, 1970) + Horace Silver - [...]

The kid Paul Maxwell is back again, this time kicking a little curry into his beats. Fashioned out of a tune by Jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby , Bombay is a dope track that smashes sounds from southern Asia into a smoove bass groove, resulting in a hazy, almost psychedelic beat that you can chill/party to. Don't forget that P Max has done a lot of other tracks and he's still rising fast on the up-and-up. Check out Bombay below, and even more of his tracks over at his soundcloud . Paul Maxwell - [...]

Give the Drummer Some's Favorite Downloads from the MP3 Blogosphere Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910) "I have learned that there lies dormant in the souls of all men a penchant for some particular musical instrument, and an unsuspected yearning to learn to play on it, that are bound to wake up and demand attention some day. Therefore, you who rail at such as disturb your slumbers with unsuccessful and demoralizing attempts to subjugate a fiddle, beware! for sooner or later your own time will come." [...]
By The Time I Get To Phoenix is not even my favourite Jimmy Webb song, much as I love it, but I cannot think of many other songs in pop music that traverse interpretations and genres as effortlessly as this. Here I am offering a bunch of versions that cover pop, country, soul, jazz and easy listening. By The Time I Get To Phoenix sounds like it belongs in any of these genres. And even when interpreted by artists from the same genre, it is an immensely flexible a song. Just compare the versions by the Four Tops, [...]
My Troubled Mind —released digitally and on happily hostile 10" vinyl, as perfectly fits the world's only Dorothy Ashby fan with a SHUT UP STUPID BITCH! t-shirt—is nominally an instrumental beat record. But play it at Dub Club, at Mas Exitos, at Echo Curio or at Manimal Fest and it will fit like it was especially commissioned. In seven songs and snippets, he dissolves and resolves together again dub and psych and hip-hop and rock and kraut and electronics and if not now he'll certainly soon grab Pete Drake and his talking guitar and claw off a little piece of [...]

The time has come! Summer is upon us, and for me, as a blogger, it can only mean one thing: Time for the annual summer mix! However, this year's will be quite different from the previous ones, hence its appearance here instead of the main blog. This time around, I made it with a clear theme in mind: To create a soundtrack for a fantastic summer getaway fantasy. Exotic locales, improbably blue skies, palm trees & white sands... steel drums. You name it all. Summer Getaway is a concoction of [...]

HappyParts first heard this track a while back on Viva Radio when doing a record mailing. This groovy number jumped off the screen. Dig this 1970 (Cadet LPS-841) funky groove produced and arranged by Richard Evans, based on the writings of Omar Khayyam. Dorothy Ashby indeed has true soul getting way down with Jazz Harp Bebop . Next to Sun Ra- Space Jazz does not get more wild than this. Blast off. The Moving Finger

i dont know much about any of the below, but its a pretty righteous collection of 70's funk, jazz, groove and all around weirdness that only the 70's could have produced. some of the stuff actually sounds pretty timely, while some other stuff would make awesome personal theme music for either sweet loving making or just walking down the street. 1. ritual - nico gomez 2. je m'appelle geraldine - jean-claude vannier 3. pcyhedelic mood - piero piccioni 4. t plays it cool - [...]

As may not be obvious by the "hip hop blog" facade, my listening habits are actually a bit varied. I often get on kicks and find myself with certain "vibes" of music on repeat for days. Aside from my mornin Weezy, as of late the soundtrack for my days is of a pretty laid back [...]

Dorothy Ashby: The Moving Finger From The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby (Cadet, 1970) Melvin Jackson: Funky Skull, Pts 1 & 2 From Funky Skull (Limelight, 1969) My prior post on Common, with special mention to Cadet/Cadet Concept, reminded me that Chicago's own Dustygroove Records has recently inaugurated what I think(?) is their first ever reissue series and not surprisingly, they started close to home with a few major Chicago albums high on the soul/funk [...]
