For years Pete Doherty has been the living incarnation of his own lyrics. A drugged-up, incoherent indie talisman producing little of any note and living off dubious past glories. I must admit I had the knives sharpened for this one. Why expect anything other than another epic failure? "'What a waster, what a fucking waster, he pissed all up the wall". Or did he? Grace/Wastelands suggests not. Pete has become Peter, and it seems it's not just the name that's changed. Doherty's done away with the slurring lyrics; the messy, disconnected album formats are a thing [...]

[Happy Monday. Here are some new sounds that reached my ears:] What does O+S equal? The duo — a seemingly unlikely collaboration between Azure Ray's Orenda Fink and Scalpelist (Cedric LeMoyne of Remy Zero) — has given birth to a self-titled album (due March 24 on Saddle Creek) of understated but cinematic pop. Many of the songs began as field recordings Fink made; you can hear the organic noises married with Scalpelist's electronics in the churn of "Permanent Scar." O+S opens for Great Northern [...]

Think you know Peter Doherty ? Vilified by the world's press and written off at every turn, Peter Doherty finds himself constantly at the centre of a media maelstrom, a frenzy that bombards his private life with allegations, accusations, invasions and intrusions. They say that it's calmest in the eye of the hurricane, and that's where you'll find Peter; coolly strumming his guitar while the storm around him carries him ever closer to Arcadia. Pete Doherty - Grace/Wastelands review That quest for utopia still propels Peter in [...]

Unless you're British, or an American of a certain age, chances are you don't know Scott Walker . Oh, you may have heard the voice — the soaring, tremulous baritone behind the '60s hit "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" and some other gems from that era. To most, Walker's name, if it was recalled at all, has receded into the chords of history. This week affords two opportunities to get to know Walker, an Ohio native who shot to stardom with the Walker Brothers in the mid-1960s, gradually retired from the spotlight over the [...]

I've been waiting in the wings for awhile now for Pete Doherty to release a solo album, and finally that day has come. For me, his best performances have been the times that I've seen him play on his own with just an acoustic guitar and his voice. However, with debut solo album Grace/Wasteland , there's a mix of some of the acoustic Pete Doherty that is endearing and raw and also songs filled with the colorful musicianship of a full band. With all that's been written in the media about Pete Doherty and his [...]

Dot produces dreamy pop with an edge. At present, she says "Since this period [releasing her album in autumn last year] I have been in the studio writing more music and also poetry..... including several ghostly ballads for my next album. Dot Allison is probably the only female singer to rival Beth Orton for her 'comedown queen' crown. Dot Allison (born Dorothy Elliot Allison, 17 August 1969, Edinburgh) was originally a founder of One Dove. In 1991, Dot and One Dove released one LP, "Morning Dove White", a Weatherall-produced post-club classic. One Dove split up in the late 1990s following wrangling with their record label. Dot withdrew from music for a while before returning as a solo artist. She released her debut album, 'Afterglow', in 1999 to generally positive reviews. The album was a song-oriented pop outing [...]

It's about time I got onto the next in my singles series. I'm doing a bit of an alphabetical skip too, but it makes sense. You see, the next artist I'm coming to is Dot Allison , the London-based singer-songwriter, who first made her name as part of early 90s post-rave Scottish trio One Dove – made up of Dot, Ian Carmichael and Jim McKinven. One Dove first appeared in 1991 with the 12 inch single Fallen on the legendary Soma record label from Glasgow. That 12 inch in itself became [...]
