★★★★ Listening to Doug Hoyer's full-length debut album, I found myself curious about Canada for the first time in my life. Hoyer, the Alberta native, has created a love story of sorts in Walks with the Tender and Growing Night , part ode to his beloved country, part celebration of all that is young and carefree. I do not think I have ever felt more of an urge to visit Canadia, land of elk and maple syrup, since his album mesmerized me into thinking the trip might just be worth it. Walks reminds me a [...]
Herohill delivers another fantastic compilation, with 'The Bard of Montreal,' their tribute to Leonard Cohen.

by teepoo We've heard of Doug Hoyer before. This one is a duet with Jeese Northey from Jesse and the Dandelions. It's a mellow duet with the underlying electronics that pulse like one of those machines at the hospital that show your vital signs. Jesse Northey and Doug Hoyer- Signs of Life

So...I suppose I'm a tad bit late to the year-end-best-of-lists party but oh well. Josh already offered up his favorite tracks in the year-end best-of playlist and, while our lists have a lot of crossover, I thought I'd offer up my favorite 50 tracks from the past year. I've struggled with the idea of trying to put a 'best-of' stamp on anything I listen to based solely on the fact that I'm not all that comfortable with the idea of ranking all the tracks I love. This is more a representation of all my favorite tracks from [...]

by teepoo We haven't really had a Snow Bank here in Toronto yet. Yesterday's snowfall lasted maybe 15 minutes and then it melted 15 minutes later. I'm sure the situation is much different in Edmonton where Doug Hoyer is native. It's not a traditional Christmas song, but it is a must add on your holiday/winter playlist. It's a song that reminds me of the same letting go of a loved one as Stars ' Your Ex Lover Is Dead but in a much [...]
Doug Hoyer: "Snow Bank" Celebrating the first snowfall in his home base of Edmonton, Doug Hoyer shared an appropriately themed final single off his solo LP, Walks with the Tender and Growing Night, this week: "Snow Bank," a twee, boy-girl duet about his first kiss. With a hint of Jens Lekman in his voice, the song forges through an innocent indie-pop vibe into the outro's busier percussion layers and distorted guitar atmospherics that bring Bright Eyes' Digital Ash in a Digital Urn to mind. Hear/download the tune, which features recent discovery [...]
There is an earnest charm to Doug Hoyer's music , and Snow Bank (featuring the always great Jessica Jalbert ) is a perfect example of that fact. A nostalgic look back on a first kiss between two close friends and the complex feelings that such an event evokes. It's something that almost everyone can relate to, and if you are like me, you can also relate to falling asleep in a snow bank. Except when I was pulled out of the snow bank, it did not end in a romantic kiss. Just a long stint of [...]

Despite the mellow fall we're having, it has already snowed in Edmonton, and Doug Hoyer welcomed that first snowfall with Snow Bank, the release of the last single from his previous album . As per usual from Doug, it's a catchy tune, helped on by the lovely vocals of his frequent collaborator Jessica Jalbert. MP3:: Doug Hoyer - Snow Bank f. Jessica Jalbert WEB:: doughoyer.bandcamp.com

Edmonton artist, Doug Hoyer sent along a track called Snow Bank that he recorded with Jessica Jalbert (a recent FWBA favorite). He told me he awaited the first snow fall in Edmonton to release it, and thankfully Toronto has been nothing but an eerie calm, mild nights that make me believe that we might just skip the whole season on this end. He went on to describe the song, " I wrote it in the winter of my first year of college, when [...]
[ download ] [tweetmeme] Edmonton's Doug Hoyer first came to attention in his native Canada back in 2004 as a cast member on the CBC reality show Rock Camp - a spin on School of Rock that followed musically inclined teenagers in their efforts to form bands at the titular camp. Since then, he's been releasing a steady stream of product that usually somehow manages to bring a synth-pop spin to the odd wave of ukulele music that's been all the rage of late. [...]

Paris Green is a track that separates Jessica Jalbert ( Bandcamp / Soundcloud ) from the rest of girls sitting in empty bar desperately trying to hit the big time for wistfully playing dream pop until their heart's content. Her vocals are gently dynamic; breathy at first rising to an angelic crescendo whilst still remaining largely nonchalant. In the same way that Kim Deal manages to insert contented basslines into the most sombre of Pixies songs so does bassist, Rene Wilson. Along with melancholic vocals and bass, the astral guitars ensure that Paris Green is an [...]
When I came across this song, I was immediately taken by the smoothness of the song. The sweet bass line along with the electronic/space-esque feel really works in Doug Hoyer's "Northern Lights." It's pretty close to as laid back as an electronic tune can get and that's what makes it so great in my opinion. The guy has really put it all together in this one. The song itself comes from the
