It's nice to be able to accomplish three things at once. Here's what we're getting done here: 1.) Reminding you that home is where the tapes is and that charity is good. The nice people at Hometapes are offering a massive holiday album for free over at their Band Camp. It's one of those "pay what you want" dealies and they're throwing the proceeds at a charity, which is pretty sweet. It's 21 songs for free, but if you're super thoughtful on this first day of [...]

[photo courtesy of Jon Behm ] When an artist who I respect asks me to do something, I usually comply. On a night when I barely arrived in time to record their set at Mercury Lounge ( here ), Megafaun's Phil Cook informed me that I should definitely record Doug Paisley's set. I quickly finished setting up the rig and immediately hit record to capture Doug's set - and I'm quite happy that I did. While singer-songwriters with sweet voices and narrrative lyrics are all too common, Doug Paisley is clearly a special case - [...]

Over the weekend, while taking a walk in the Santa Monica neighborhood I passed by @McCabesGuitar shop, and as I normally do, stopped to check out their "Upcoming Shows Wall." One of the posters that caught my eye was the simply titled MEGAFAUN . It rang a bell. At some point I had heard or seen their name somewhere else, yet couldn't place it. Once I got home I searched the cobwebs in my brain and had a quick chat with @jasonspang. We traced it back to the connection with Bon Iver [...]

The good folks at Daytrotter left the safe confines of the Midwest to bring Barnstormer 5 to the East Coast. And though they've battled venue changes and hurricanes, we hope, for the sake of Daytrotter and music fans, the rest of this tour goes off without a hitch. melophobe caught the first stop in Kittery, Maine, and despite power problems and the venue shutting down before White Rabbits could play, we had a fantastic time. First up was an acoustic set from Doug Paisley of Toronto, Ontario. Pardon our poor attempt at lightly parodying [...]
Party People...Party People....can ya'll get funky?!?! (said in Afrika Bambaataa Planet Rock electro voice, natch) The summer is rapidly flying by is a blaze of, well, rain and fog for yer pals out here in Halifax, so that's kind of a bummer. BUT, the end of summer also has a silver lining, football season!!!! Sorry, little excited there, but the real silver lining for music fans in Halifax is that the initial acts for the 2011 Halifax Pop Explosion have been announced . You know what that means....huge list of said acts in a blob of text goes [...]

Megafaun - crowned last week as RollingStone.com 's new "Band To Watch" - have confirmed North American and European headlining tour dates in support of their imminent self-titled album, out September 20, 2011 on Hometapes. Iconoclast songwriter Doug Paisley will open most North American dates. See below for a full itinerary. 'Megafaun' is a watershed in the group's history, their most ambitious, eclectic album to date. Recorded in Eau Claire, WI at April Base, the studio operated by their former bandmate Justin Vernon of [...]

The Daytrotter Barnstormer Tour returns to Dexter Michigan on September 1st. The lineup this time around features White Rabbits , Doug Paisley , Wildlife , Princeton and Hacienda . If you haven't heard of one several or any - we still highly recommend attending this one of a kind musical experience. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 @ the door. However - I can assure you there won't be any @ the door as this WILL sell out. [...]

I've seen this one described as 'alt country.' Seemed a little too heavy on the country and a little short on the alt. side of the equation to my ears, frankly. As you are probably deducing, I wasn't digging this one too tough. Download Doug Paisley I Stand Alone Download: Doug Paisley I Stand Alone [MP3]

There was a time, not too long ago, when I had never heard of Daytrotter. I try not to think about it too much. But these days, the mastermind behind Daytrotter, Sean Moeller knows his music. When he tweets about a band, people, and I, listen. So back in January, when Sean tweeted that he was loving Doug Paisley, it got my attention. But when my favorite band Dawes tweeted back that they loved Paisley's last album Constant Companion , I knew I had to listen to it. Immediately. Paisley, hailing from Toronto, is a great singer-songwriter [...]

Voting starts for this year's Polaris Prize tomorrow and after much humming and hawing (and precious little payola), I've narrowed down my list to the Top Five. A couple of records fought hard for inclusion - and I hope they make it through so I can vote for them in Round Two - but at the end of the day, the following records really hit me the hardest over and meant the most to me in the last twelve months. Are they the most recognizable LPs? Most certainly not, [...]

Undoubtedly, the strength of Doug Paisley's latest record, Constant Companion , is the simplicity of his melodies and how they warm the cold, hard truths he delivers. I know a skeptic might point out that honey coated country songs are a dime a dozen these days, but ones that act as the perfect counterpoint to engaging, no holds barred lyricism certainly aren't. Constant Companion is a sad sounding record but really it's core the songs are really about challenging love. Paisley refuses to let the often used emotion off the [...]

New Wax It was easy to overlook Doug Paisley's criminally underrated 2008 self titled debut. The unassuming Canadian built a rock solid alt. country album on sound songwriting and subtle, intelligent musical decisions. Back with a new album entitled Constant Companion , Paisley turns in another classy batch of tunes that sound to me like a breezier take on Beck's Sea Change rather than the more idiosyncratic Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, who Paisey, for some odd reason, often gets compared to. Vocally, Paisley sometimes reminds me [...]

By Jon Stone | @jwstone grass|roots ep. 7 The year is fading quickly. Soon you will be bombarded with lists a plenty, including several here, declaring the top ArcadeKanyeNationalSufjan records of the year. Before that, however, I wanted to throw down a final four records from 2010 that fit somewhere within the wide net I've been calling grass|roots. Each of these bands/artists put out great records this year that, I would guess, have been largely overlooked in mainstream circles. Ease into the first day back from turkey by getting acquainted [...]

If it wasn't for the internet, I may have never discovered Doug Paisley (no relation to the American country super star Brad Paisley). I was scouring an alt country music message board back in early 2009, and a poster from the UK wrote, "Oh my! This is the stuff people. Canadian singer songwriter who brings to mind Guy Clark and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy ." Whoa! Like me, Paisley lives in Toronto, and he regularly plays near where I live. And yet, it took an internet post from across the pond to discover his [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Releases Eliciting comparisons to American troubadours Guy Clark , Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt , Toronto-based singer songwriter Doug Paisley recalls a bygone era, but somehow never sounds derivative. His recently released sophomore effort, 'Constant Companion,' is as familiar and formidable as the Prairie plains, and features guest turns by fellow Canucks Feist and the Band 's Garth Hudson . [...]

Jess Baumung Toronto's Tranzac may have been founded as the gathering place for the Toronto Australia New Zealand Club, but for the city's musical community its role extends far beyond a place to discuss the mysteries of the Coriolis effect . It's also one of the city's all-ages venues and as such, has been both an incubator for many of Toronto's up-and-coming acts and a low-key stop for bands touring through town. I personally have fond memories of seeing Beach House's first show here in November 2006 with [...]
