If you're anything like me, as the calendar comes to its yearly close, productivity has a way of screeching to a grinding halt. Sure, the holiday season can have that kind of effect on us all. But I have to admit to another culprit: the year-end list craze. I may not be the most committed list compiler, but I certainly am an avid year-end list follower. It's kind of amazing how in tune a lot of these lists seem to be, isn't it? You'll find no argument at Naive Harmonies that the likes of Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, [...]

Captains Dead Blog joins in the fray at Day 10 of the "Best of 20093 Blogger crew with a list that apparently requires a stroll down memory lane. Honestly, this stroll is one that could be rightfully taken out of yours truly's memory banks....almost. Regardless of the payoff being quite a spectacular list, it just might be worth it for a photo of Greg at 9 years old... ~Smansmith ~~~ The year was 1983... ...the year when I started [...]
What a strong year for music! I've had a hell of a time narrowing down my list this year. Once I got it down to my top 30 albums , it took me forever to parse it down to ten. One thing that I noticed about my particular list is that it really leans heavily towards the country/folk-ish albums. I'm usually a big indie rock geek, but for some reason none of the rock releases that professional critics are lauding this year really did anything for me (e.g. Grizzly Bear, Phoenix, Animal Collective, etc.). [...]
Philadelphia's most ethereal rock band, Espers aren't taking the US by storm so much as drifting through a few of its major cities, riding on a chilling late Autumn breeze and a cloud of grey and pink smoke. With a total of six shows (three to each coast), this is a tour nearly as wistful as the group's fourth album, III . When that album dropped in October, reviewers couldn't help but point out how much sunnier it seemed compared to the group's previous offerings. Yeah, in the way that The Wicker [...]
Leslie and the Badgers play in a style more retro than vintage country but nevertheless unique. With their multi-talented instrumentalist stage show, like a gypsy caravan picking up musicians and fans along the way (at least more since I had last seen the group), the band plays its well crafted melodic lines in particular with sweeping violin, slide pedal steel guitar and lyrics such as "When you say I miss you day and night / with love brighter than the ballpark lights / I'm a boat lost at sea siding on the shore / say you miss me once more" [...]

Toronto's Doug Paisley is exactly the kind of (North) American artist that U.K. critics romanticize/wet their knickers for: He's kicked up some dust on the road with Will Oldham, and his music is a dustbowl of '70s AM singer/songwriter and classic country. We'll leave the rest of the cowboy imagery to the Brits; "Digging In [...]
Most Likely To: Make you wonder there is no style of music called Canadana. If you can ever get by security, you should really check out Donnybrook Manor. It is a sprawling compound located over 17 spacious acres. The inside is absolutely gaudy with priceless works of art. We have so many golden artifacts, we make the Vatican look like shit. Take our mailroom, for instance. It is a model of opulence. The mailroom has fine linen wallpaper that we got Jackson Pollack to splatter for us. (Those re-animation fees were a bitch, but [...]
I love it when I get music recommendations from other continents. But its even better when someone from another country recommends an artist from your hometown. Just this week I had an 18-year-old from Brazil e-mail me a track from The Sadies. It made me laugh because The Sadies are my favorite Canadian band, and I love the fact that someone half my age in the southern hemisphere is digging their music as much as I do. Also this week, a friend across the pond in the UK told me about Doug Paisley [...]
Of all the evergreen subjects covered by rock 'n' roll (girls, street fightin', cruisin', California, love, god), the days of the week hold their own in terms of the sheer number of good songs meant to fete the seven that exist. (Plus the weekend, of course: whether we're livin' for it, workin' for it or [...]

Doug Paisley is a songwriter, singer and guitar player from Toronto, Canada. He makes beautiful, warm pieces of laid back Americana. The first time I listened to his debut (self titled) album, I got butterflies in my stomach. Guy Clark is an obvious reference point, but this is a record that holds up on its own, using the strength of its influences to create a fine stand alone work. No song would sound out of place on the old Loose Records 'New Sounds Of The Old West' compilations, which, for me, is high praise indeed. Recently Paisley has [...]
Doug Paisley - Take My Hand Sombre, heartfelt and oddly comforting - this is folk as the genuine article; Canadian alt-country artist Doug Paisley reducing any talk of nu-folk weirdness to an embarrassed silence.
