The day after his amazing live set at the Bowery , Sam Amidon came round to the house to record a Toad Session. He didn't have all that much time, and I don't think he quite knew what he'd let himself in for either, so this one is pretty brief. Still, between this and the footage from the live show I think we have a really nice portrait of the guy, who is so different in person from his recordings. Whilst the latter may be beautiful, and whilst All Is Well is an amazingly lovely album, his personality dominates [...]

Band: Doveman From: New York, NY Sound: whispery ballads, delicate piano romps, or as the man himself puts it, "lamp rock" Similar Artists: Sondre Lerche, Luke Temple, Nick Drake, Explosions in the Sky, Sufjan Stevens Listen Now: “Holding Out For A Hero” When I was very young, my half-sister Jenny died tragically. She was a teenager, and it was the 80's. She left behind a wardrobe of brightly colored clothes, rainbow stickers, [...]
I thought I would start off my obligatory, but still fun, Best of 2008 musings by taking a brief look back at some of the highlights we covered here at CreamTeam. While we didn't get things off and running until about March of this year, the staff was busting at the seams with pent-up postings. We kicked things off, appropriately enough, with a chopped and screwed Jacko remix courtesy of Marquis. Announced our birth to the world, by burning down the Liars Club. Fed you some WMC coverage and whole lot [...]
Because it's a little off the indie concert circuit (and kind of expensive frankly), Joe's Pub doesn't get quite as much coverage on Bumpershine as a lot of the other venues around town, yet whenever I look at their schedule, I'm always impressed with the high level of talent that they book. Here's a look at some upcoming Joe's Pub shows that caught my eye for reason or another. (Just in case you don't notice from the listings below, Bebel Gilberto just added a second late show on Tuesday night— tickets are still available.) [...]

Nico Muhly, Sam Amidon, Doveman, and Final Fantasy — July 16, 2008 @ The Music Hall, pt. i Nico Muhly is one of the most brilliant, talented artists in music today; and as I have mentioned before, Sam Amidon's voice is absolutely gorgeous and All Is Well is the best album of 2008! Read my post on Nico Muhly’s Mothertongue here and Sam Amidon’ All Is Well here . [...]

Lately I came across the most affecting song in some time. Doveman is Thomas Bartlett, a keyboardist who has played with Antony and the Johnsons, David Byrne, the National, and the Frames, along with many others, along with bandmates Sam Amidon ( who I've featured here before ), and a few other people. Lately, they covered the soundtrack of the 80's classic (and yes, it is) "Footloose", when asked by a childhood friend of Bartlett's, Gabriel Greenberg, for a particular reason. When I was very [...]

Summer is winding down, kids are going back to school and bands are finishing their summer tours or starting fall ones. This weekend is very front heavy with a lot of action on Friday then tapering down to a single show on Sunday. Most are one city shows so be sure to check out who is where. The 80's are making a huge comeback. So many artists and groups that thrived in the early MTV era are going out on reunion tours after years of not performing. [...]

Thomas (Doveman) Bartlett's voice comes from a tired sounding place, a bedroom without a sandman, a bedroom as black as the widening black hole pupils of his eyes. This is the sound of a young man who knows what it means to be tired. Bartlett has insomnia, a fact I learned of quite a while ago, and this complaint seems to fit his music quite well. The only salvation, or liberation, from insomnia, is sleep itself and when you can't sleep I'd imagine you'd sit up and create music that seemingly trickles from that place between waking and sleeping, between [...]

Not sure it's ever going to be necessary to rehash Footloose for any reason, but the singer Doveman decided to do just that, with varying degrees of success. He covered the movie's entire soundtrack as a kind of favor for his friend, and the piano-heavy, mostly acoustic result is some eerie, down-trodden, and occasionally awesome remakes. Here's my favorite. Doveman - "Holding Out for a Hero" Visit Doveman's site to stream the whole thing.
