I feel a bit out of the loop at the moment. Maybe it's the Daylight Savings, or the avalanche of post-break work flooding over me. But most likely than not, it's that temporal void of missing the musical mecca of SXSW , although vicarious atonement after the fact is nice. Another pleasant surprise was realizing that this set, which I had acquired rather arbitrarily, took place at 2005's SXSW. I suppose the relative brevity of the recording is a byproduct of those tight schedules, but many thanks to the dedicated festival goer who [...]

This week really tests the luck of the Irish. The The Black Donnellys ' episode that should've been shown this Monday night, episode 103 - "God is a Comedian" , has been skipped over due to it being "too shocking." Instead they're showing episode 104 - "The World Will Break Your Heart," editing in a recap to keep you up to speed. You can still watch the skipped episode online , though, up through April 10, which you might want to do before tonight's episode (and if you've missed it entirely, all three [...]

Being back in NJ and NYC for a week, you can notice how some things change, some stay the same and some just boggle the mind. Here are some observations, in no particular order of relevance. The second I got back into Manhattan, I had to make a tough choice at almost every corner. You have to choose whether to look at the most beautiful woman you've ever seen, or the craziest man ever. Do you look at the supermodel, or the guy wearing orange footie pajamas, wrapped in tin foil, simultaneously playing [...]

Sometimes all my slick dance moves seem insufficient for really marvelous occasions. At times like those, now I have a special friend on the Internet to show me new grooves to woo the crowd. Watch out, here he comes . I was so enamored with his gyrations that I missed reading the descriptions of each dance the first time around; make sure you look in the text box as you click through for gems like: " Perfect for when you are chosen for the raised cage area in a popular club or on a TV [...]

As I was enjoying the few hours of free time I have between quizzes and a long night of hospital work, I started listening to an old mix CD I'd made a few friends after moving to Chicago a few jumps back. By moving to Chicago and abusing the resource of my friend Matt's pimped out Mac, I was finally able to break out the spindles of over 1,000 CDs I had burned over the prior 2 years as I sold off my CD collection disc by disc. Suddenly, I was able to pore over albums I [...]

Liverpool to Hull The M62 has been mentioned in various songs over the years. The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu , The Human League and It's Immaterial have all had stabs at describing its myriad of charms. And a wealth of charms it must have despite my complete lack of knowledge of most of its length; otherwise why else would it have been the source of so much creative energy. Roads, of course, have always been inspirational. Think of Highway 61, [...]

The first of these posts of the year has left me with a nagging feeling of returning routine, one I'm not completely comfortable with. I'll persist despite it. First point of order is an interesting curiosity which expands on the supposed satanic message in Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven as discussed in the Skeptic.com video that The Don posted this week . You can listen to Britney saying "sleep with me I'm not too young" and other crazy things here (Thanks Justin). Today's humble collection includes something new from Modest Mouse. With the addition of [...]

There are many eagerly awaited new releases for 2007, but one of my particular highly anticipated CDs will be from Doves ( text / flash ). The boys posted a holiday greeting to their fans today, filling us in on what's been going on: For anyone under the impression that we've been sitting back holidaying/taking it easy, they'd be mistaken, we've been grafting hard for the last few months, writing lots & lots of songs / music, last month we relocated temporarily to a cottage in the Peak District, Derbyshire (next to a [...]

A few weeks ago, the song "Pace" by little-known San Diego dream pop outfit Sophia had us thinking about how much we enjoy England-more specifically, the alternative/ambient pop music that seems to eminate therefrom-and so we started working on a compilation of things from the last five years that reminded us of that sound-songs that were recorded either atop a cloud or at the bottom of a hollowed-out swimming pool and nowhere else in between. Below is that compilation, and it features a cut from electronic-oriented indie pop duo Air , a group that is decidedly [...]

Ok this is really exciting and also very important...Its that time of year again for " Neiles Life Year End Lists " A list of top albums and songs of 2006...Why so early?? Because I did my list for 2005 around this time last year. Actually it was November 24 of last year that I did my favourite albums of 2005...I believe its the best time to do these lists. A) Cause there isn`t a lot of good albums that come out in December anyway, except for those BullShit albums that the major labels push on us [...]

As most of you probably know, Isobel Campbell is the "Belle" formerly of "Belle and Sebastian". I think when she left the band, they lost a lot of what made them so special. The interplay of vocals between Isobel and Stuart Murdoch was one of the things that caused me to fall in love with them in the first place. The new direction they're moving towards, what with the 60's throwback pop stuff, has pretty much put me off. This album, however, is bringing back the breathy intimacy that kept me on the edge of my [...]

OASIS - (What`s The Story) Morning Glory? Oct 3, 1995 Epic You either love Oasis or you don`t...actually I`ll rephrase that incase its been mentioned on another blog...You either love the Gallagher brother`s or you hate em...I personally love em and love this album Oasis - Wonderwall Oasis - Some Might Say [...]

After 20+ post, I'm noticing the blog has not featured too many british bands. So here comes Doves , one of my favorite UK band. I discovered them with lost soul, which I think is the greatest ever debut album, "alternately melancholy and uplifting, sparkling darkly with charged atmospherics" dixit Amazon. Check out the instrumental opener, firesuite, live in Holland. MP3: Firesuite (Live Holland 2002) Buy: Lost Soul

Well, it looks like we in Central Florida are in the direct path of Ernesto which is officially a Tropical Storm. The weather dudes are predicting a max. of 50 mile/hr winds and a ton of rain. Thankfully, it isn't a hurricane but if you have lived in Florida then you know it is better to be on the safe side and be prepared. The hurricane season down here extends all the way thru the end of October, early November so this is probably just a start. Let's hope I don't get washed out and swept away... [...]

Sometimes it's nice to come back to music that's familiar to you. I've been listening to so much new music lately that I think i needed a nice break this weekend. So i decided to stay up all night and make a little mix, and as you can see it's very Britpop influenced. Eh, who am I kidding it's completely Britpop. There's stuff here from bands who aren't exactly british but I still consider it Britpop anyways. At one point this is all I would ever listen to, a [...]

Dre Wapenaar - TREETENTS (1998) I've neglected to post about the odesseyian adventure and reckless abandon mixed drink that is summer camping in Wisconsin. I've neglected many other vitals recently including paying parking tickets, finding a job to pay rent, and buying toilet paper... but in my current pull-yourself-up-by-your-boots traps git-er-done mood, this post seemed the most appropriate to complete. And honestly, what is weightier than a dynamic group of young adults putting aside an entire weekend to venture into the wilderness to learn [...]

Doves have always been one of my favorite bands, as I always find myself coming back to each of their brilliant albums every once in a while. Sadly, i've never seen the band perform live as the one chance I had to see them years ago was when they came to Atlanta with Ash. I don't remember what year exactly, but i'm pretty sure it was the year The Last Broadcast came out. Anyways, I didn't make it because I couldn't find anyone to go see the show with me. I wish I [...]
