The Black and Blue Bowl at Webster Hall annually features a variety of hardcore bands. Considering my hardcore roots, I thought I would know more people at the show, but the bill was mostly mid-period bands. I did see some great metal shirts throughout, which made me immediatley comfy- Behemoth, Sodom, Gorguts..and at some point I did hear some Celtic Frost over the PA. The sold out crowd surfed, dove, piled-on and stared in awe at the slew of bands presented in this 9 hour day. There were no barriers in front of the [...]
And now for not long awaited/demanded second half of my Frank Sinatra covers album post. You can find part one here. Mind Over Matter - New York, New York Mind Over Matter was an NYC hardcore punk band that, if their Last.FM bio is anything to be believed, played a major factor in the development of screamo. If I was Mind Over Matter, that's not something I would be bragging about. I like this cover a lot, especially how it injects NYC crime statistics into [...]
Exactly 11 years ago, Miles Zuniga was jetting off to Amsterdam with his Austin-based alt-rock outfit Fastball to try to put some touring muscle behind its latest release, The Harsh Light Of Day. Expectations were high, given the surprising mainstream success of 19982s All The Pain Money Can Buy, which the band milked for almost [...]

SF shoegazing rock band Vir just released this imaginative animated video for the song "Down by Law," the opening track from the band's latest album, Gillespie . The band will be performing at the Red Devil Lounge on Thursday June 23rd, with My Second Surprise and Never Never .
Back in 1993, music had not yet been ruined by the internet. Since information traveled through word of mouth and the postal system, it was much easier for a band to seem mysterious and larger than life than it is today, when you can see Jesse "Ripper" Owens' Twitpics of him flying model airplanes with [...]
This is a bonus episode, because it felt completely appropriate and cathartic to do so.
Since this is all about pop punk, does anyone remember the Big Show 2 in Elgin? Zoinks! played that show as did Slapstick, The Bollweevils, Oblivion, No Empathy, Boris The Sprinkler, Jon Cougar Concentration Camp, 4 Squares, and more. I can't even remember who I went to that show with, but it was a great one. Check out the flyer here . MP3 Lagwagon - Violins from the 1995 album Hoss The Starting Line - Best Of [...]

With the day of mass turkey consumption rapidly approaching and Christmas right around the corner, one has to arm him, or her, self with plenty of conversational ammunition to wage a successful battle in the holiday banter wars. And can you think of a better way to impress your friends and family this holiday season than with obscure Rock And Roll fun facts? Plus these little nuggets of joy can be dropped at just the right time to get you out of potentially painful discussions. For example, say you're sitting around the dinner table devouring your third helping [...]

It´s Friday, so time for another musical grab bag. Want to know what songs caught my attention over the last week for one reason or other? Please read on. Got some new stuff, some oldies and two flamingos. In a fruit fight. Let´s start off with Blitzen Trapper, a band I´ve praised in these pages before. They hail from Portland, Oregon and mix country, pop and Pavement-style indierock like no other. Currently Sub Pop recording artists, the country flavoured Texaco comes from the self-titled debut album on their own Lidkercow [...]

So what happens when a contemporary artist covers another contemporary artist? I call it magic. I mean, come on, Iron & Wine covering The Postal Service? Matt Pond covering Neutral Milk Hotel? Nick Cave covering Pulp? All awesome, all happening tonight. "Cubs In Five" The Mountain Goats "Cubs In Five" Eric Metronome This one goes out to my best friend, Pat, purveyor of Before There Was... and longtime Cubs apologist. Just messin'. He hails from Chicago and bleeds Cubby [...]

Nine down, one to go. MP3 | Sludgeworth - Only One MP3 | [...]

Two posts in one week!? I'm suddenly prolific! Big Country - Wonderland (Extended Mix) Big Country - Giant I created this blog because of bands like Big Country. Anyone who's only heard their sole American hit 'In A Big Country' and nothing else is really missing out on some of the best music of the '80s. Big Country's 1983 debut The Crossing is one of the defining albums of the New Wave movement - and it still holds up as an amazing record to [...]
