Over the eleven years that Dr. Dog has been making people smile with their music, the Philadelphia quintet has always showed plenty of love to the Bay Area and Northern California. On top of annual multi-night runs at The Independent and Fillmore, they've played Treasure Island , Hardly Strictly Bluegrass , High Sierra , and will complete our local festival circuit this August when they rock Outside Lands . So it's no surprise that UC Berkeley tapped the group to close out their 2012 Cal [...]

Virginia's The Trillions might not be on your map just yet, but they're definitely a band you'll want to familiarize yourself with today. With named influences such as the Strokes and Big Star it's easy to lump the band's sound in with the masses, but I think the vocals give them an extra touch that sets them outside the usual realms. I hear a little bit of Dr. Dog in the vocals, giving a softer underbelly to their rock tunes. They've got a new record coming out called [...]

Time to clean up the tab attic a bit with some of the interesting tidbits found around the web. 1. Matt Groening, "The Simpsons" creator and Portland native, tells Smithsonian magazine that he named the famous fictional city after a city in Oregon . Thus ends a decades long debate about where Springfield was actually located. Not entirely surprising, given many of the character names on the show are derived from streets in Portland. [ via ] 2. Jon Stewart and The Daily Show did a tech-twofer last night taking [...]

Another case of one good band covering another and this one has been floating around the internet for quite some time now, but this is the first live acoustic version that I've seen. This amazing cover of the Architecture in Helsinki indie tune " Heart It Races " done by Dr. Dog is also one of those rarities where the cover is just as good if not better than the original. Obviously no disrespect to AIH, but Dr. Dog turned this indie pop jam into a classic folk tune with a vibe that separates it somewhat [...]
