For the first time in their long and storied careers two of New Orleans most recognizable acts - Dr. John and The Neville Brothers - will head out together for a US tour. The two acts will hit road starting on January 31 of next year for a cross-country run that brings their brand of Crescent City funk and soul to a mix of clubs and theaters, that will surely lend itself to some collaborations throughout the run. At least we hope so. If [...]

Few tunes are so genuinely New Orleans as the Earl King penned "Big Chief." Though King wrote the song, it was made famous and catapulted to legendary status by Professor Longhair in 1964. Below, Dr. John calls on Earl King to join Professor Longhair and The Meters for an evening closing version of "Big Chief." Basically, you're seeing the DNA of New Orleans music as we know it today all on stage together. Good stuff. Since we're on the subject. [...]

It is the 25th anniversary of the Summer of 1973. I was 10-years old during that particular summer. I have a 10-year old of my own today. He's sometimes sweet, often petulant, always inquisitive. In short, he's a lot like his father. I've been thinking a lot about that summer over the past several months, how much the music will always be a soundtrack to that time. I was going to write a week long series of posts about my summer as a 10-year old, riding our banana-seated bikes around the lake where we [...]

1917–2008 The Adios Lounge would be remiss if we didn't acknowledge the passing of Jerry Wexler, who died Friday at the age of 91. I've often said that if I could live anyone else's life in history, I'd live Jerry Wexler's. He coined the phrase "rhythm and blues" while writing for Billboard, and when he was at Atlantic, he not only helped create rock 'n' roll, but later proved crucial in popularizing soul music. He worked with Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin at their peak, worked with Dusty Springfield and Wilson Pickett at [...]

I love when bands fuck with Wikipedia . The Brooklyn base band, VietNam, list their names as; Joshua "Exploding Motorcycle" Grubb on Lead Guitar and Vocals, Michael "Jesus Beard" Gerner on Guitar and vocals, Ivan "DJ Dolphin" Berko on Bass and Harp and Michael "Flaming Locks" Foss on Water Harmonica and Drum. The Bio goes on to say that Vietnam first appeared on YouTube, where their cover of Janet Jackson's hit single "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" , received over 1 million views. VietNam falls into the psych-rock category. Their [...]
Well, it's Wednesday again... and I still got them hump day blues. This week's selection includes some deep cuts from artists you won't find in the blues section of your local record store. It's a mixed bag, but it's all 100% blues. Stay tuned for the next installment, featuring some great stride blues tracks from the likes of Professor Longhair, Dr. John, and Otis Spann. Happy rest of the work week from the Stranger Dance crew. MP3s: Bob Dylan - Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat [...]

1908. It was a leap year starting on Wednesday. It was the year in which a ball signifying New Year's Day dropped in New York City's Times Square for the first time, Mother's Day was observed for the first time, Henry Ford produced his first Model T automobile, the Chicago Cubs won the World Series by defeating the Detroit Tigers 2–0 in the fifth game (their most recent Series victory), and, coincidentally, the song "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" was written by Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer. Written one hundred years ago, the song would [...]
