Thanks to Dre Skull, XLR8R.com & Welikeit.indie readers will get a little lesson in the history of bounce music with this exclusive podcast. The Brooklyn-based DJ and producer compiled tracks from the sissy rap genre, a New Orleans phenomena that rose to fame in the late '90s when a cross-dressing MC named Katey Red came to fame on the Southern rap scene. Here, Dre Skull shows off some of her tracks, as well as those of veteran Big Freedia and up-and-coming star Sissy Nobby. "Sissy Bounce Mix" | download ( 38mb ) [...]

Brooklyn producer/dj Dre Skull has a new mix out and it's influenced by the New Orleans Sissy Bounce scene. Here's the story behind the mix: "New Orleans is a unique city and as far as music scene's go, Sissy Bounce stands alone. Gender bending rappers have the city of New Orleans on lock, performing 5 to 6 nights a week for large, predominately straight crowds. Their ability to get the girls bouncing trumps all and there's nothing else quite like it in American music. On and off over the last 6 months, Dre Skull has been [...]

A good friend of mine and Ninjasonik frontman, Jahjah , is throwing a weekly over at Happy Endings (previous home of the Shit Hammered party). Now that I am back in NYC, this seems like a good way to get back into the swing of things. ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ MP3: Pretty nice remix here, happy and upbeat, good for gettin' your Spring on. • Dre Skull - I Want You Back A band's place in [...]

Toronto, Ontario, Canada. My home town. Torontonians love to hate their city. It is full of good, it is full of strife. It is full of teenagers dressed in American Apparel and Value Village who listen to Canadian indie music. It is full of weather-worn bitches and hoes. It is full of some of the best artists of all time. Sometimes I'd prefer a night in with a bottle of alcohol than facing the reality of going out and ruining my new sneakers in our 3 meter high snow. But [...]

Brooklyn's Dre Skull is bringin' some awesomeness to the west coast. If you're not familiar, Dre Skull and his partner Juiceboxxx have been making some of the nicest club-jump-off white-boy rap on any coast. Best example being 'Sweat'—a bouncy party track that consistently gets hipsters onto dancefloors and the sweat-sweat-sweat dripping off. For the 123 single, Spank Rock 's Xxxchange (who happens to be playing at Modular 's ' Party of the Year ' in London tonight) and DJ Funk did remixes. Here's one of 'em: [...]

Juiceboxx: rad to the bone Retard Disco-style geek-rap phenomenon JUICEBOXXX brings his spazztastic, totally rad, straight-outta-Milwaukee steez to town tonight, and nobody could be more psyched than our favorite DIY partytime crew BIG DIGITS , who own this shit locally and could really use a few playmates who don't live like 3000 miles away. Mac and TD would likely be in the front row even if they weren't the opening act, and if anyone needed more incentive to get out the crib this evening, the Juicy one is bringing DRE SKULL , his [...]
Still Listen To Gangsta Music put two very, very different tracks up this weekend: One is a remix of Ol' Dirty Bastard's 1999 classic "Got Your Money" (and by "remix," we mean "mash-up with 'Louie Louie'"); the other is Papoose's freestyle take on Nas and Jay-Z's "Black Republicans," which heats up in the last minute or so. Both songs are worth a listen, and neither will be appearing on Tom Finn's playlist anytime soon: Ol' Dirty Bastard - Got Your Money (Dre Skull Remix) [MP3] Papoose and [...]
