With a restless spirit, and various members spread across various bands about town, it's been a while since we've heard anything from the Cleveland, psych-pop band, The Dreadful Yawns. This video, here, for "F Song," is a quick reminder why they've been one of the driving forces in the Northeast, Ohio music scene over the past five years. While the track begins as a quaint, poppy strummer, accompanied by the slight plink of piano, it takes a couple nifty twists along the way - Seriously, check out that freak out around the minute mark - Yet, never loses [...]
the Dreadful Yawns -" Kill Me Now " Earlier this week, a post at Gothamist.com declared that New York City is over and Cleveland is now the place to be for financially strapped, community oriented artists to be. Thanks for noticing, world. So, with that in mind, here is a song from Cleveland band, the Dreadful Yawns. They are a band that really defies any one genre because they dabble in a lot of them. You'll hear a little bit of country, psychedelic rock, pop, folk and everything in between. Normally, I [...]
Restless is one way to describe the Cleveland, psychedelic rock band, The Dreadful Yawns. They're a creative, dynamic, and talented bunch who love to tinker in the studio, write new songs before the old ones have had their time to shine, and perform those new songs when most bands would still be promoting their completed work. Come to think of it, restless may be the best way to describe the Yawns. It's certainly the most apt adjective for their latest single, the atypical, garage-rock, freak-out jam, "Glitter in Your Hair." It's one part coordinated [...]

It seems as if the last couple of months have their built in hooks, with December harkening an annual wrap-up and January getting the rejuvenation vibe up and running again. But what about the months on the other sides? I mean, what does November get from indie rock? And until the fellas at Exit Stencil came up with their Free February brainstorm, the shortest month of the year also felt like the one with the least to offer. Now, though, things are different, thanks to the aforementioned Cleveland label and recording studio . Exit Stencil is giving away [...]

There was a heightened sense of anticipation here at Citizen Dick world headquarters this week for Thursday's Southeast Engine show; we've been unable to get From the Forest to the Sea off of the stereo and were deeply excited to see that material live. Happily, our high expectations were warranted; Southeast Engine ripped through ten of that album's twelve tracks before wrapping things up with a few old favorites; the material broke into another plane live, validating our feelings that this band is on the cusp of greatness. The evening was jam packed with sweet and rocking sounds, [...]

MP3: Dreadful Yawns - Expecting Rain MP3: Dreadful Yawns - Kill Me Now Despite the name, The Dreadful Yawns ' five or so years of existence have been anything but boring. This month saw the release of the Cleveland band's fourth full-length in that span, this one with a completely new lineup with the exception of principal songwriter/vocalist Ben Gmetro. [...]
* The curious case of the bandwidth bandits continues: I wish I could give you more of an update, but I'm still going back and forth with my hosting company. I've been assured that the admins are currently looking into this matter and I should hear something shortly. Yesterday, I did some digging around on my own and was able to trace the 1.45 TB of bandwidth usage back to 8 sessions using IE5 and Windows 98 during Saturday and Sunday. I contend this type of usage is humanly impossible. They disagree. Well, [...]

Checked out The Dreadful Yawns cd release party Saturday night at The Beachland, and The Yawns' set was, let's say, a little on the meandering side. As I expected, they played more songs not on the album, than those on Take Shape, the album they had just released, and while some of the new tunes worked well, (If I had track names I'd surely give 'em to you) others didn't. Look, I'm all for bands being democratic, with each member having input about its direction, and the chance to take the lead on a song or two. Yet, [...]

The Dreadful Yawns Take Shape Exit Stencil Take Shape, the latest album from Cleveland's Dreadful Yawns, first took shake shortly after the release of their previous album, Rest. Nothing out of the ordinary there. Many bands start writing their next album during the promotion of the current one. What made the Yawns' situation unique, is that principal songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist, Ben Gmetro, was promoting a new album, and writing the next one with an entirely new lineup of the band. Organist Clayton Heuer, vocalist Elizabeth Kelly, drummer [...]
