I think I'm starting to run out of barely-known acts from the 80s and 90s to write about. I've gone pretty deep down the new wave/dance/electronic rabbit holes, but are there any acts out there you all would recommend that I haven't yet featured on this blog? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm trying to get more into 90s dance music, but there's just so much of it! I love acid house and trance, if that's any help to anyone thinking of recommendations. Tonight's post is all "dub," a genre whose defining aural charactistics are as mysterious to [...]

Southern Shores are finding themselves washed up on the beaches of many a music blog of recent, as we build up to their debut 6-track EP, Atlantic , which begins with the release of it's first single, Night Is Young , that's officially out today. It would be easy to join in with the often-generic editorial coverage and state that they're the perfect soundtrack to your summer, but in all honesty, they would make you feel summery if you were camping in the depths of northern Russia in January, so warm and comforting is their marvellous music. Article first published as Album Review: The Good, The Bad And The Dread by Dreadzone on Technorati. Can you remember your first gig, concert or festival? There you were watching and listening in admiration to this particular band. A momentous occasion in your life that will stay with you forever. For me, it was the [...] Continue..

Last night, 12 hours before my first neuroanatomy exam of the semester, I went to see DJ Craze at a hip-hop show near downtown LA. Now, I've typically only ever seen Craze in a rave-ish type context, but this show last night pure hippity frickin hoppity, featuring a hilariously cheesy yet talented rapper Yelawolf. So during Craze's set, after an enjoyable half-hour of some Boys In The Hood, M.O.P., and assorted classics, he noticed that the crowd had sort of fizzled and lost energy. What'd he decide to do? "Uhhh hold up! Lemme drop somethin' crazy on yo ass!" - [...]

Dance-dub legends Dreadzone return with "Yeah Man", an atmospheric breakbeat number in which pulsing, throbbing bass carries echoing pianos, dark synths and MC Spee's Rasta-aping vocals through a satisfyingly varied mix of moods. The juxtaposition of a few comedy samples and Spee's uplifting (when comprehensible) 'we're gonna put a little smile on your face' lyrics with the moody syn... Read more..

In the crowd of England songs that were released for the 2006 World Cup there was a bit of gold... A diamond in the rough. No it wasn't the Embrace track (obviously), it was a song that was should have got more attention and it baffles me as to why it didn't. The name of the band who created this masterpiece are Dreadzone and you have heard their music being associated with footie elsewhere before. If you've watched Match Of The Day, or Sky Sports or any fitba related show you will have heard their [...]

Dreadzone have featured here before. They are on tour, have a new album coming and are making available the track "Tomorrow Never Comes". Not the most inspiring title but if you like crusy techno rock dub fusion, go for it. From main man Greg's blog (Sept): THE FINISHING OF THE ALBUM long time no blog, the only reason I have some time now is because i is on a proper bunked tourbus for 10 days (see next blog) so can make good use of time that we all [...]

Last time for 1990s altrock darlings Garbage. Remix duty supplied by crusty techno bods Dreadzone for Garbage's massive hit - Stupid Girl. Garbage may have derived its name from their insertion of seemingly unusable noise in their songs. Another anecdotal origin for their name, was that Butch Vig contributed a remix to Nine Inch Nails' album Fixed, which Trent Reznor labeled 'garbage'. Stupid Girl was a pretty good pop rock song. I thought the remixes could take it comewhere special. Sadly, [...]
Once upon a time festivals operated with two stages at best, sometimes even one (see our Feile piece for a good example) but these days the amount of choice is often bewildering. Operating in its own tented world, the Heineken Green Spheres stage has a line-up that has could easily grace its own festival, mixing new and established talent from Ireland and around the world. Here's our pick of the bunch... 1. FIGHT LIKE APES , Friday Last year FIGHT LIKE APES cam to Oxegen as a band on the brink of something. This time round [...]

In just over a week I will be gritting my teeth and venturing back into the world of the 3-day festival after a 13 year hiatus. Yep, Feile '95 was the last time I put myself through sustained food poisoning, trench foot and an almost mind numbing obsession to find cold draught beer. In truth it wasn't that bad (you have to go back to the hopelessly romantic Trip2Tipp for that!), in fact I was
I did say I was originally intending a few words about EON & Depth Charge, then I was overwhelmed by work issues and kind of put it on the back burner for a while, but someone did remind me I was going to do so. Ahem. Ahhrrmm. I came initially to the worlds of the aforementioned via Spice, a Dune sampling bleep fest. Along the way J. Saul Kane seemed to get custody of the movie sampling stuff and EON with the bleeps and the serious techno. Eon went on to work with Baby [...]
