The third annual NYC Popfest is happening as we speak. Four days of catchy songs, lovelorn lyrics, "bah bah bah" choruses, mostly polite dancing and vintage clothes. The fun kicked off Thursday night at New York's most indie-pop centric venue, Cake Shop, with a stellar lineup of local talent some of whom I've seen before, some not. It was more like a party than a show, everyone seemed to know one another, and it was the kind of event where the DJ played songs like The Pastels' "Comin' Through" or Orange Juice's "Felcity" and they get the kind [...]

She never had an overwhelming desire to be a mother - I was the one that pushed kids - but she's turned out to be a great one. Patient where I fly off the handle, vigilant where I'm distracted, quietly confident where I'm shrilly anxious. In short, longed for or not, she is everything Boy Z (and Number 2) could need in a Mum and more. Happy Mother's Day, Dr. O'C! And Happy Mother's Day to my Mom, my Grandmother and to mothers from the USA to Australia, from Anguilla to Zimbabwe. But [...]

"But what can I spend these words I write on?" Actually composed of four dream bitches and one fantasy bastard, this New York-based quintet started off as a duo by Yoko Kikuchi and Anna Zakaluk in 2003. Both fresh out of art school, their creativity was in a whirl and ready to be applied to something., and they aimed it at music. Despite a bit of nostalgia to Dream Bitches , these girls are the nightmare of 1950s Pleasantville housewives - they don't hide their intelligence...or feistiness. Picking up three more members, Dream Bitches craft [...]
Still playing catch up but a few more recent tracks snuck into this mix. At least they're not all from England this time. And thanks to mixwidget.org I got my mixtapes with style back! Sorry Opentape but these look so much better. I'll be taking a break next week to go visit my hometown and see how I deal with a 400 mile motorcycle ride. I might be walking a little funny for awhile. You can purchase this mix (or individual songs) from here: [...]

(AKA: Best New Artists 2008; note all other year-end lists will be coming in December) It seems this year with the economy in turmoil and more and more people spending less and less on Christmas gifts that companies have picked up on this trend and adjusted their marketing accordingly. More of the commercials from big companies like Target and WalMart have focused on friends and family during the holiday season by spotlighting food and drink rather then the normal easy to market products like iPods and DVD players. So it seems to these eyes that this holiday season [...]
Monday: Nonhorse @ Cake Shop 8pm $7 There isn't much going on this Monday evening, but Nonhorse seem to have a pretty interesting reputation behind them and should be something to enjoy in some way. Apparently their debut album is spliced together out of pieces of old cassette tapes and at a recent show they burned incense and cut onions to add smells to the sounds of their music. Not sure if

Although this band has one of the worst names I've ever heard, Dream Bitches have put out one of my favorite records so far this year. Their fairly new Coke-and-Spiriters is most certainly the second coming of Tuscadero . This song is a great cover of Belle & Sebastian's "Me and the Major" from their If You're Feeling Sinister record. You can order both Dream Bitches records directly from them on their website, or pick them up if you're able to catch them playing their brand of catchy/sassy pop [...]
Dream Bitches Genre: Lyrical / Garage / Americana From: Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Manhattan, New York, United States With a name like Dream Bitches you could be excused for expecting a new group of riot grrrls on the block but take a listen to 'Coke-and-Spiriters' , their second album and it soon becomes [...]

Everything about Dream Bitches - their website, album art, press photos, and sound-feels like an Urban Outfitters catalog; early Urban, before the American Apparel influence. But I enjoy Urban Outfitters. I wouldn't know its look at a glance if I didn't. They have me by the balls over there. Dream Bitches turn out soothingly melodic pop songs. The five-piece band was originally a girl duo whose debut Sanfransisters (2005) is a sweet, catchy blend of high vocals and clean guitars with a tight rhythm section. Their sophomore album, Coke-and-Spiriters (2007) [...]

Dream Bitches are a New York band that have been together for five years and recently released their second album, Coke-And-Spiriters . Their sound reminds me slightly of Australian indie-punkers The Grates but Dream Bitches lack the energetic front-woman that The Grates have in the form of Patience Hodgson. Incidently, The Grates have a new single out. The reason I've mentioned the energetic Hodgson is that if Dream Bitches [...]
To cap off what has been a phenomenal, music filled, problem free week, we figured it was only appropriate for another edition of our Friday Mixtape. Plus, we needed to clean up our inbox! This time however, we organized the collection of mp3s up a bit. Hope you don't mind. As always, let us know what you think. Like what you hear? Don't be afraid to voice your opinions... NEW Singles: "Getting Led" by Adam Green "Born To [...]

MP3: Dream Bitches - Bad Luck Bill Now this is what I'm talking about: Dream Bitches fucking rule. Their new record "Coke-and-Spiriters" is out now and rocking a cd player nicely. It's 10 songs of wonderful pop songs from a bunch of ladies who keep it bright and keep it right. Honestly, some of the most fun you can find in music this year. Recommended. "Coke-and-Spiriters" is out now from RIYL Records / [...]

Well, the winner of the latest "Coolest Band Name of the Day" contest has been chosen, and I think we can all agree that Dream Bitches deserved the win. They almost won for "Album Title of the Day," too, with their sophomore release, Coke-And-Spiriters , but they lost out when I realized I misread the title. I liked it better when I thought it was Coke and Spriters , but what can you do? Fronted by Yoko Kikuchi and Ann Zakaluk, Dream Bitches sound kind of like a grungier version of the Hot Toddies [...]

The older I get, the more I appreciate the darkly twisted Nick Cave . He and his Bad Seeds have a new record out, "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!" which is just pure art. Check out the title track for a glimpse. MP3: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!" London based singer-songwriter Owen Duff has offered up his latest EP "The Stop Gap"as a free download. A little reminiscent of Badly Drawn Boy, but definitely worth a listen. MP3: Owen Duff - "Act of War" [...]

If all the differences in music I've been posting lately strikes you as a bit erratic, that's because it is. I'm having a bot pick bands out of the list of bands I want to write about. Kind of prevents me from going "well I need to write about THIS band" before writing about another band. It's all random, and I think that will help boost my productivity. As always, send me your music recommendations at eitheror.hugh (at) gmail.com. I've got some great stuff in my inbox lately, but there's always room for more. One of the bands that found [...]
Who: Dream Bitches Location: Brooklyn, NY elbo.ws Ranking: #44 Thoughts: These days it seems quirky indie pop is being done to death! Every time I turn around there's another band that sounds just like 50 other bands and before I know it my head is spinning in the midst of all this quirk. Luckily, for every 30 bands that sound the same there are bands like Dream Bitches that add a bit of
