DRI (Lawrence, KS) I found Dri in my random web surfings late last week. Her new album Smoke Rings is out now on Range Life Records which is the perfect title for the Kansas native positively gorgeous smokey voice. The Kansas native mixes down tempo beats and classic electro pop with easy listening. I seriously haven't found a more KCRW worthy artist since first discovering Sia. I have a feeling that Dri is well on her way to becoming another indie pop sensation. Download her track "Free Tonight" below so you [...]

Back in the mid-90s, I had a thing for Everything But the Girl . I still contend that Missing is a timeless song, and it's one of the few that I never get tired of hearing. There will never be a permanent replacement for EBTG, although I still hold out hope that they'll release more albums. But thanks to a tip from a friend (thanks, Matt!), I discovered someone with a voice and sound that instantly reminded me of EBTG. She goes by the name Dri [...]

The moment is inevitable. No matter how much music you have access to, some days none of it seems to evoke the slightest bit of interest. Whether due to ignorance of what else is out there, some sort of music saturation, or just some passing mood, it makes no difference as the feeling is the same. Although, within this musical malaise there are always a select few albums that seem impervious to this feeling of indifference and provide just what is needed until the spell passes. For the better part of a year for me that album has been [...]

Dri is the best. I have loved this bitch for years now. Long live the anniversary of The Anniversary.
Finally getting to this e-mail that's been sitting in my inbox for a couple days now. A press release on Lawrence, Kansas artist DRI (from A dri anne Verhoeven). I had not heard her before I got the e-mail, but I took a quick listen and loved her voice. But I didn't have the words to write anything. She's no stanger to the music scene, having lent her vocals and keyboards to bands like The Anniversary , Art in Manila and Fourth Of July . Her debut album is all [...]

Many folks in Kansas City still aren't hip to Dri , but that hasn't stopped the Lawrence songbird from booking a West Coast tour leg with Conor Oberst and the Mystic Mountain Band . Now, this development will preclude Dri from playing our Pitch Music Showcase on August 7, but ... we understand. Dri, along with her other band, Fourth of July , is up for Best New Act in the Pitch Music Awards .

People will try to tell you that Slayer or Metallica are the founders of thrash... and nothing could be further from the truth (well... unless someone tried to tell you that Kenny G is the reason thrash exists, then that's pretty damn off.) DRI (Dirty Rotten Imbeciles) were and still are one of the most overlooked bands as far as thrash music goes, yet almost any band that plays the thrash crossover style has been influenced by these guys, including more famous acts such as Suicidal Tendencies. Their music is fast, loud, and just through one [...]

This review is very late. Very, very late. My deepest apologies to Tristen at Filter Magazine . Okay, so, about a month ago, I hit up Larry's Replay Lounge to see San Diego's indie rock trio Grand Ole Party , fronted by singer/drummer/badass Kristin Gundred. [See photo above]. The show was opened by the soothing sounds of Lawrence's own Dri . Born Adrianne Verhoeven, she's been in the field for around a decade, first making it big in the indie rock world as a vocalist/keyboardist for The Anniversary and with a smaller [...]

I started listening to this album a while back but it somehow slipped from my consciousness. Then, I started hearing/reading more about Range Life Records out of Lawrence, Kansas. This small (but excellent) label only has a couple releases under their belt (White Flight, Fourth of July, 1 Million Light Years), including the debut album by DRI titled Smoke Rings . She's the ex-keyboardist from The Anniversary and also plays with Art In Manila, but this album leans a little more electronic with whispy/light vocals throughout. It's a strong debut and a perfect [...]

To say we took a break is an understatement. Time got the best of me, and I never got around to finishing my top 15 songs of 2007 posts and to move forward you've got to complete that which was start. So here is the rest, then I will be taking the rest of this week off to compile many posts to look ahead on the new year. Thanks for sticking around! 10: Dr. Dog - Heart It Races [...]

When American Hardcore came out I was really excited to see it. I was expecting/hoping for a history of the hardcore scene as told by the players, maybe some humorous stories and a bit of a glimpse into the inner-workings of some of the bands. What I was not expecting was to watch a bunch of 40-something guys give themselves a reach around. Outside of the fact that the movie was just plain boring, the pedestal these guys were putting themselves on was pathetic and a complete disservice to that scene, not to mention the fact that I [...]
Girls Aloud "Black Jacks" - The intensity is dialed down a bit, but there's no mistaking this for anything other than a Girls Aloud song. That said, there's a few melodic turns in "Black Jacks" that remind me a little bit of Oasis, but I guess I shouldn't be so surprised. After all, though there's some pretty obvious differences between the two, they both specialize in producing unstoppable hook machines that scramble sentimental cliches and total nonsense into inscrutable lyrics that somehow make sense in the context of a gigantic chorus. Dri - Two are One Dri - You Know I Tried

"Smoke Rings" will soon find it's way into your heart, mind, MP3 player, boombox, car stereo, dancefloor and/or transistor radio. The debut album from Adrianne Verhoeven (AKA "Dri") is just that wonderfully listenable. It's rare to find something this refreshing and unique that still maintains some level of universal appeal but "Smoke Rings" is just that kind of gem; words like "crossover" don't even apply, because it's not really crossing over from anywhere to anywhere, it just IS. And it's gonna be huge. This is due entirely to the profound skill and charm of [...]

So, in case you haven't noticed yet i've got huge amounts of love for Lawrence, KS based label Range Life Records . In addition to the raddest band ever right now, Fourth of July , and former Anniversary singer White Flight , they have just today released the debut record of Dri , entitled Smoke Rings . Prior to this release, Dri has been/is a member of Fourth of July, Art in Manila , the Anniversary, and a slew of other Omaha and Lawrence bands, it would seem. Smoke Rings is certainly [...]
MP3: Dri - Don't Wait NOTE: Today's contribution comes from Mr. Busy: Zach Hangauer . I asked him to do a write up on "Don't Wait", a song from Dri's "Smoke Rings", which came out today. He released this record and I wanted to support it in any way possible, as it is beyond fantastic. It also introduces a new but long overdue feature here on the blog, the companion to our " FUCK YEAH " posts: GO TEAM. [...]
Since I was unable to score myself a Photo Pass to the 2007 Vegoose Festival in Las Vegas, NV, I will let our friends over at Pitchfork Media do most of the showing for me. Please check out Pitchfork's photos from the Vegoose Music festival by clicking here . The music festival included an incredible performance by the French house music masters Daft Punk , as well as a stellar performances from M.I.A., Queens of the Stone Age, Iggy & The Stooges, The Shins, Ghostland Observatory, Muse, Rage Against the Machine, [...]

The most astute observation I’ve probably read all year is Ryan noting that William Elliott Whitmore has the kind of voice that “ will make a room full of talking assholes shut up for 45 minutes and not say one word .†It’s a comment I go back to nearly every time I listen to Whitmore, and every time, I’m reminded of how right it is. This is a voice that cannot and should not be ignored, imbued with a hardscrabble hoarseness that make the downtrodden tales it delivers all that more powerful. [...]
