So I already gave you one , two lists of 2011 records worth checking out. I also gave you lists from some of Atlanta's finest musicians and music listeners - Alex , Matt , Richard and Erik . The bowl season is in full swing, the playoffs are almost set and it's that last day of the year, so what do I have left for 2011? Just one more list. These are the records that we discovered, or rediscovered, in 2011 that did not come out in [...]

With the 2011-2012 school year officially underway (or, depending on which college you're attending, about to get started), the Philadelphia area is looking at its annual influx of bright-eyed freshmen who will attempt to find their place in a new environment. However, September is always an active time for the music scene as well, with a variety of unknown and well-established bands coming out of their summer hibernation to announce fall tours and upcoming albums. Throughout the week, The Key will be profiling a handful of brand-new (or previously undiscovered) local acts that are just starting to make a name [...]

Photo by Angel Ceballos Drink Up Buttercup Two weeks ago, we heard the murmurs about the Philly rock quartet Drink Up Buttercup possibly breaking up. Were the band members calling it quits? Were they changing the band's name (and/or sound)? Nobody seemed to have any actual answers, so we took the initiative and, you know, called the band to find out what was going on . Lead singer Jim Harvey told us that the band had decided to perform its last show under the Drink Up Buttercup name [...]

Photo by Angel Ceballos Sometimes, growing pains for bands can be really painful—especially when they involve three of the four members choosing to move in a new direction, leaving the fourth behind. "Honestly, it was harder than breaking up with a girlfriend," said Jim Harvey, lead singer of Philly's Drink Up Buttercup , who confirmed today that the band will be performing its last show under that name at The Fire on Saturday night (as part of the Sundrop Arts And Music Festival). Harvey, Farzad [...]
As you might be able to tell by our lack of posting, we were hard at work over the holidays putting together our end of the year lists. Today is the first of three lists - our Best Albums of 2010 list. As per usual, this is simply a list comprised of albums we've listened to this year and adored. We don't post any album that we haven't given solid ears to; likewise we don't give in to hype that

Sunday evening I cruised over to The Knitting Factory to see Drink Up Buttercup and GIVERS, two bands I was not particularly familiar with but was pleased to see nonetheless. Drink Up Buttercup, when researched, can be described as Psychedelic, which is something I really did not hear live. In fact, their songs on record [...]

It's back! Chicago's top winter music festival, Tomorrow Never Knows returns for its seventh year from January 12 - January 16, 2011. TNK has become one of Chicago's most anticipated musical events because not only is it in a dead time, musically and weather-wise, but it serves up the best of both national and local acts. A quick glance at the initial schedule looks promising thus far. There are big names such as Besnard Lakes and Freddie Gibbs performing alongside up-and-coming new local groups such as psych outfit A Lull [...]
Two themes emerged among some of the bands playing CMJ on Thursday: powerful female vocalists with interesting, percussive instrumentation, and happy dudes rocking out. More like it: CMJ 2009 Highlights CMJ Wednesday Highlights, 10-20-10 This Week in NYC: The Owl Mag's CMJ Show Picks

We Are Trees Going into 2009's CMJ Festival , Surfer Blood, The xx and Warpaint were poised to be the breakout acts. In 2010, the field is wide open with over 1200 bands seeking approval from NYC audiences. Still, the bands that should generate the most attention are Lord Huron, We Are Trees, Cloud Nothings, Lower Dens, Wild Nothing, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Circle Pit, and Yuck. Out of that group, I expect Lord Huron, We Are Trees, and Lower Dens to come away with the most accolades of the festival. [...]

Showing up at the office, checking your daily traffic reports, and discovering that a respectable number of people have flocked to your young site to download that 14-song sampler of local music you posted about the previous afternoon. Just wanted to let you all know that in case you missed it elsewhere, the reviews for the concert I went to last Wednesday are up with pictures and MP3s for download. The concert was a lot of fun, with an energetic audience and even more energetic bands, it made for a great night out. The highlights were being surprised by how intense Drink Up, Buttercup was and their banging on trash cans with maracas. Jukebox the Ghost highlights were their cover songs. They played The Cure's "Close to Me" and it was amazing. They closed their show with a [...]
