Do you want to know a secret? Do you promise not to tell? Let me whisper in your ear. I've been holding out on readers of There Stands the Glass for years. I'll finally divulge one of the choicest music-related secrets in Kansas City. The event calendar of UMKC's Conservatory of Music and Dance is a hidden treasure trove for music lovers. Dozens of recitals take place all over town near the end of each semester. On Wednesday the calendar led me to Immanuel Lutheran [...]

This weekend marks the inaugural run for Atlanta's brand new Shaky Knees Festival , and I'm stoked to be there to experience it! The two day festival will be held in a newly completed park next to a prominent Atlanta music venue, The Masquerade . The schedule and lineup is a bit light compared to other festival heavy-hitters ( Bonnaroo, Sasquatch, Hangout ), but for a first year festival, the lineup is pretty amazing. The schedule is 12-11 Saturday, May 4, and 12-10 Sunday, May 5. Nearly every act scheduled to [...]

"Well I used to go out in a Mustang, a 302 Mach One in green..." Yeah, that's what I call a southern song alright. "Me and your mama made you in the back, and I sold it to buy her a ring..." Drive-By Truckers - Outfit And since we're talking Mustangs, here are the mighty Vandals. Not the (cow-)punk ones mind, but the originals from the sixties. Wild garage and a whole lot of poontang. The Vandals - I Saw Her In A Mustang

[photo by Joe Madonna ] A Drive By Truckers concert can be an exhausting and exhilarating experience. The show is jam-packed with superb material - songs filled with emotion, humor and expert storytelling. At the Capitol Theatre in Portchester on Friday night, DBT played one of the longest shows we've seen in years, not just in time but also in just pure music. The set was almost continuous, no banter, no tuning, no messing around. And at a full two and half hours, twenty seven songs and forty-minute, 9 song encore, it was [...]
The way Drive-By Truckers and Old 97's move, you can pretty much count on a local tour stop at least once a year from each group. They're on the road together this spring, and their stop at Crossroads KC at Grinders on Saturday, May 25 , should be a hell of a country-rock party.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

hey, howdy, hi! ive been obsessing over the truckers for the past week or so, which is not a bad problem to have and it does happen quite often. when southern rock opera came out in 91 i was living in chicago, and while i loved the record i dont think i necessarily think i got the "southern" thing. granted i had been to the south, but not really experienced the south outside of touristy type places. it wasnt until i moved down here that i really started to get whatever "it" is. the songs definitely resonate more personally now [...]

As rock n' roll season heads into full swing, it's time we all take advantate of the many shows that are coming our way in the next few months before SXSW hits us hard. In honor of A.J. McCarron's super-fine girlfriend Alabama's thrashing of Notre Dame, here is Alabama's finest doing Where The Devil Don't Stay And if you were like every other person in America, that didn't go to Notre Dame or has a copy of Rudy on Betamax, and laid the points last night; well then you got some extra coin in your pocket. What better way to spend it than on some good ol' Alabama boys. Cooley, Patterson and Isbell all have fantastic solo albums out now. Go buy them. Cooley [...]

It's late in the year for lineup changes, but that hasn't stopped two musicians from leaving the bands for which they're best known. Percussionist Craig Myers has left Rubblebucket , while multi-instrumentalist John Neff has unexpectedly quit the Drive-By Truckers . [Photo by Jeremy Gordon ] Myers has left the employ of HT faves Rubblebucket to focus on his own band - Barika, according to a report by Brent Hallenbeck of the Burlington Free-Press. After more than five years in Rubblebucket, when [...]

Is the ghost of Ronnie Van Zant happy? Sure, he’ll never get to write any more timeless songs about the Southland, pace the stage in his bare feet, or knock his keyboardist’s teeth out (something he did—twice), but there’s one thing that must bring him some solace—I’m talking about the Drive-By Truckers. Since 1989, the Athens, Georgia band has written countless great songs in the Southern rock tradition—songs like “The Living Bubba,” “Where the Devil Don’t Stay,” and “Hell No, I Ain’t Happy.” Why, they even released an ambitious 2001 concept album, Southern [...]

It's rare that an album gets announced this close to the end of the year - particularly one that's not just a stocking filler Greatest Hits compilation. This one is a record I'm really excited for, a solo release from DBT's Mike Cooley. There's just one new song on the album, but there's some choice Drive-By Truckers songs. No 'Daddy's Cup', but you can't have everything! Mike Cooley's debut solo album, The Fool On Every Corner, will be released on December 11, 2012. The Fool on Every Corner was recorded by longtime Drive-By Truckers’ producer David Barbe [...]

Drive-By Truckers' Mike Cooley has announced that he will follow in Patterson Hood's footsteps and release a solo album. The record, A Fool On Every Corner , is set to come out on December 11th. There are a number of tracks on the David Barbe-produced record that are live acoustic versions of DBT favorites. Here's the track list: Continue reading »

The world has come a long way since the Who released Tommy in 1969. Tomorrow night, a stage adaptation of the Flaming Lips' seminal 2002 rock opera Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots will premiere at L.A.'s LaJolla Playhouse. It's not Broadway, but it is an indicator that the era of the rock opera could make a comeback. And this is the perfect time for a revival of the style. Read More...
