Last night's David Letterman was a home run; the best I've seen from him in a long while. Not so much Dave, who is always Dave, but his guests, all of who were solidly entertaining: Tracy Morgan, Kat Von D, and the Dropkick Murphys. Tracy Morgan was bizarrely and hilariously distracted. Every time "D.L." would ask him a question, Tracy would respond with something completely irreverent and only slightly related to what they were talking about. At one point, they're talking about the writer's strike and Dave asks Tracy what he's doing with his free time. "I'm [...]

Like I said before ever since I became a part of elbows , I feel the need to post a lot of music even when, during the past few days for example, I haven't been in much of a music mood. I get really OCD and stuck on certain tunes and can't bring myself to listen to anything new. I don't know how y'all come upon music..personally I have to find music myself to like it...when someone says "Oooh, you have to check out this band..." my ears go deaf. Most of the time, I get to [...]

Honestly, I don't care that this song came out in 2006 when the Departed came out. This song, in my mind, is no longer associated with that film, but rather the Boston Red Sox and more importantly, the insanity of Jonathan Papelbon. Annnnnnnnnnnnyhow... the fun of this song is entirely in its simplicity - I'm sailor peg And I've lost my leg [...]

I'm a die hard Mets fan, but I still occasionally root for those guys up north... Red Sox/Boston/Dropkick Murphys Mix Tape: Dropkick Murphys - "Shipping Up To Boston" Dropkick Murphys - "Tessie" The Standells - "Dirty Water" Dropkick Murphys - "Dirty Water" (Live)

Oooh, I learned some rugby basics this weekend, moving me exponentially along the spectrum of familiarity from "why are they all locking arms and butting heads?" to "He was robbed of a try! Don't miss the conversion!" What a crazy, visceral, fantastic sport. Like soccer, gone mad. British friend Jamie invited me to his viewing party on Saturday to watch the Rugby World Cup which pitted England against South Africa (I know the history of Dutch colonization, but shouldn't there be more than like two non-white people on that team?). Jamie's house was festooned with with St. George's [...]

So Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize. Good for him. My favorite quote on the subject, from Talking Points Memo : "You know, with Al Gore winning the Nobel Prize for his environmental activism, it really makes the Nader voters look prescient, doesn't it?" For serious. Tessie - The Dropkick Murphys Dirty Water - The Standells The Bartender's Song - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones In (slightly) less important news, the Red Sox begin the ALCS with the Indians tonight, [...]

You don't have to be Irish, a Red Sox fan or from Boston to enjoy the music of the Dropkick Murphys. ( Although none of these hurts at all! ) Actually if they happen to be playing your city, these loud and ever-improving lot might be playing so intensely you might be able to hear them from wherever you happen to be. The band have a brand new album, "The Meanest of Times," on store shelves now. Here's are two pretty great covers the band has cooked up over the years. [...]
It's Soxtober! Let's Go Red Sox! -- Liam Finn is the son of one of the Crowded House Finns, Crowded House being one of the better bands from the past. If you didn't like them, you'll be happy - Liam doesn't sound much like his dad. If you did like them, listen anyway, as this will be a pleasant surprise anyway. I didn't know he had kids making music, and " Second Chance " is a damn good song, so I'll be [...]

In the first of what shall be many installments of my personal album reviews, I open with one of the bands that really got me into music. On September 18, the Dropkick Murphys release their sixth album, entitled The Meanest of Times . Featuring a more rock and roll feel than it's predecessor The Warrior's Code , the Boston punk rockers don't seem to show any ill effects resulting from their recent mainstream attention from an Academy Award Nomination. The album features both catchy Irish influenced anthems, such as "Loyal to No-One" and downright [...]
Though I'm still in the process of tinkering around with the look of this thing, I thought I'd write up a nice introduction for anyone who is interested (though I'm not sure that is very many). The name is Alex. I'm a college student living in lovely New York City. Music essentially encompasses my entire life and I like to write about it. This place looked interesting so I decided I could use this as a forum for it. So again, hello, and here's a nice little mp3 to get some page views....maybe. Dropkick [...]
The group's last few albums haven't had the sting that its initial releases have, but there's a sensitivity (wicked sensitive) that the band seems to now approach music with that offers it as something far more complete. Such a track is "State of Massachusetts," the first single from the group's upcoming release The Meanest of Times . (more...)

Dropkick Murphys have released a polished demo version of "Flannigan's Ball," one of the many tracks from the band's forthcoming The Meanest of Times release. As the story goes, "On July, 2nd, 2007 we flew to Dublin to record the song 'Flannigan's Ball' with our good friend Spider Stacy from the Pogues and the legend himself, Mr. Ronnie Drew from the Dubliners. We just wanted to take this opportunity to acknowledge Ronnie for being such a kind and humble man, that even in the face of his own serious medical issues and the recent death of his [...]

I'm not making a political statement one or the other about the current Irag conflict or any conflict now or in the past. However, when it comes to protest songs very few equal, for me, Creedence Clearwater Revival's 1969 "Fortunate Son" on Willy and the Poor Boys . A song driven by the draft, support for those with fewer options fighting a far off battle, and the apparent lack of impact the Vietnam War had on the affluent and influential, "Fortunate Son" has inspired countless covers in the decades since its original release. Ample proof of its [...]

I just finished reading the excellent book Redemption Song: The Ballad Of Joe Strummer by Chris Salewicz and thought it would only be appropriate to post a of The Clash's (and Joe Strummer's) songs. The book was a bit too academic but awesome nonetheless. Despite the excellent post over at Berkeley Place , this is (IMHO) I've collected a pretty nice supplement of cover songs. Awhile back I also did a post of various versions of Jimmy Cliff's "Pressure Drop" which was covered by The Clash as well. If [...]

"Amazing grace how sweet the sound/That saved a wretch like me/ I once was lost but now I'm found/Was blind but now I see" Second Hand Songs lists The Beatles as the most covered artist in existence, but I have to argue that Traditional is the rightful bearer of the title. Not much is known about the man, but it seems like pretty much every artist out there has been drawn to his music at some point or another. In this post alone we feature [...]
I love Mother's Day. My wife Alexandra makes me very happy and has given me three beautiful boys. What I hate is that I get no relief. Between the tree pollen inside and the flowers spiting out god knows what inside I am getting hammered. The problem is that its all in my throat. no medicine for that! Song: Everlasting Artist: Refused Album: Everlasting Comments: People think Refused are "all that". I need to take them in doses. I can listen to the Shape of Punk [...]
