How exactly do you remix songs by California surf pop band Princeton ? Well, TEETH and Drugg have given over their treatments to the band's 'To the Alps'. The new version by TEETH makes Princeton sound, dare I say it, like Foster the People. Drugg's remix takes a while to get going, but it sounds completely different from the original, in a good way. London electronic garage duo, Drugg , released their, Shackled EP , about a month ago on the Less Music label. The EP encompasses a certain noisy ambiance throughout making it fairly difficult to listen and enjoy it right off the bat, but once you hit play a couple of times the beauty of their sound surely to be heard. 'In These Found Times' streams waves of overpowering droney textures that seem to be strangling the eloquent lyrics being sung, but it plays out in some divine composition of multi-layerd electronic [...]
The only shackles evident on Drugg 's debut EP are contained in the title. Otherwise there is a wonderfully inventive approach taken that will delight fans of forward-thinking pop. They'll find much to love here, because at its heart, 'Shackled' is comprised of three excellent pop songs, each one as good as the last. It's highly unlikely that the listener will recognise this on the first listen, however; these pop songs have been warped and utterly transformed, their foundations built upon and tinkered with to produce a sound dripping with atmosphere. Drugg are a two-piece electronic indie act from Bow in London, with Tom Hanley providing the sounds and vocals and Max Whatley on drums. Their first EP, "Shackled", is piece of cold and dark electronic music that tries to be all-encompassing; it wants to be atmospheric, intense and effective, but it just doesn't come off, and I can't really engage with it. Drugg is London duo Max Whatley and Tom Hanley. They spin dense, kaleidoscopic electronic textures with Whatley on drums and Hanley on the synthetic noise scape and vocals. There's something almost Jesu-industrio about the depth of Drugg's dark beat music (and the voice work) on tracks like the title lead-off to their EP, "Shackled" (streaming below).
