Dziekan III, Getty Images Twin Shadow mastermind George Lewis Jr. references everything from the romantic baritone of Bauhaus to the manic urgency of the Smiths on his debut, 'Forget,' but his past paints him as a musical chameleon capable of much more than moody synth-rock. "I feel like Twin Shadow is a product to every kind of musical path I've tried to [...]

One could draw all kinds of parallels between the two bands gracing the gorgeous courtyard of the Museum of Fine Arts , a certain lo-fi aesthetic being only the most prominent. Both bands flesh out their minimal core members with guests instrumentalists. Both bands buck an indie rock glass ceiling that tends to assign girls a secondary role – a violin stage left, cooing harmonies – with women who blow the doors off from centerstage. Both are beloved of a certain kind of web-literate aficionado. On the other hand, stylistically, the two bands are an [...]

Seems like it was only yesterday that I was cobbling together the TDoL best of 2008 . Yes, time flies when you're old and surly. And, yes, I know year-end lists are everywhere, cliché, overdone and a dime a dozen-but I do love them so. These lists are difficult to make, too. I mean who has time to really absorb a full record when you're being bombarded with hundreds of albums and mp3s? It was chore to make a list that exorcised both my discerning (wax-clogged) ear and my (beer-besotted) gut-the "I can see what this artist [...]

Last year , EAR FARM featured 43 bands in our Band of the Week feature... ranging from relative unknowns (such as The Laughing and Bombadil ) to interviews with indie-rock legends (see The Wedding Present and Silver Jews ) to everything else in between. In 2009 we set out to one-up ourselves, and as it turns out we've done just that. This year EAR FARM featured 45 bands as Band of the Week, again flexing our genre chops across the entire spectrum of what we consider to be the best music being [...]

Johnny Brenda's in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia has gained a legendary reputation for hosting great live music and on October 22nd, 2009 the second floor of the venue delivered all that and more. Drug Rug , a lo-fi indie folk band from Cambridge, Massachusetts opened the show. Upon entering the stage, they were greeted with a respectful applause but it seemed obvious most people were not familiar with this band. During their set, the musicians showcased their talents by trading off instruments and proceeding to play some spectacular indie rock tunes. By the end [...]

Though it was a cold, snowy night outside, Boston's Paradise Rock Club warmly invited a diverse crowd to take in Drug Rug and Portugal. The Man . Indeed, observing the flannel-draped hipsters, tight-shirted fraternity boys, and the odd dreadlocked head, I realized the wide appeal of psychedelic, noise-heavy indie rock. Drug Rug took the stage first. Two songwriting, harmonizing Boston-area natives lead the band: Sarah Cronin, a guitar-slinging pixie, and the mustached Thomas Allen. They opened with the upbeat, feel-good "Haunting You." The singers' harmonies rang out clearly over their instruments, [...]

Thing is, since you're reading EAR FARM, we're going to go ahead and assume that CMJ 2009 is your idea of a good time. Ours too.
