Adam Ficek is best known as the drummer with Babyshambles. He has played on both of the band's records, Down in Albion and Shotter's Nation. Adam has a solo project called Roses Kings Castles, whose self-titled debut LP was released in the UK in September. He was gracious enough to answer a few of my questions about drumming, Babyshambles, and that elusive Pete Doherty solo record... DF: I
Six lucky candidates from a field of 5,000 have survived contests across hundreds of Guitar Center stores to compete at the 2008 Drum-Off finals on January 10. An era of rock history has drawn to a close with the death of Mitch Mitchell , last of the founder members of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. London born, shortly after the end of the Second World War, Mitchell made an early entrance to showbusiness as a child actor. Fortunately, a passion for jazz led him astray and by the 1960s, he was drumming for a number of rock groups. He missed out on joining The Who after failing at an audition, but in the end that worked out alright for both The Who and Mitchell, as [...]
The death has been announced of Earl Palmer , session drummer. Although not a well-known name, you'll be familiar with his work: he played on The Righteous Brother's You've Lost That Loving Feeling, Ike and Tina's River Deep, Mountain High and Tutti Frutti by Little Richard. The percussive beats that drive I Hear You Knocking? That would be Palmer. Later work included Elvis Costello's King Of America album in a career that stretched from the culty (The Monkees' Head) through to the populist (contributing to the sessions for the Flintstones soundtracks). Palmer originally started out [...]
Although the ceremony was held up for fifteen minutes at the "any person here present" bit as the celebrant had to plough through 175 internet pages to determine if she really was, you know, serious about this heterosexual business, KT Tunstall has married her drummer Luke Bullen.

From today's Billboard : According to local media reports, Foley died after accidentally overdosing on prescription medication. The 1990 selection of Foley, who played in such Minneapolis bands as Curtiss A, Wheelo and Snaps, as the substitute for original Replacements drummer Steve Foley has become the stuff of legend. According to Jim Walsh's oral history "All Over But the Shouting," frontman Paul Westerberg and bassist Tommy Stinson bumped into Foley at a local bar and procured a ride from him to an audition. In the car was a copy [...]

It probably makes sense that Placebo have replaced former drummer Steve with another Steve - it makes it so much easier when you don't have to learn a new name, doesn't it? It's a bit like when Elsie Tanner's second husband was, luckily, also called Tanner. The band have poached Steve Forrest from Evaline , the band who supported them on their 2006 tour. Future support acts will do well to count their members as they pack up on the last night, lest Brian has pinched a bassist or a keyboard player. Mariya (to whom [...]

In college I minored in music and history, and so dug the two that I took a class titled "Sociology of Popular Music." In a laid-back way, we weren't afraid to send conventional thoughts pear-shaped. For example, the theme of my big class presentation was, "Protest songs are affected by sociopolitical events, NOT vice-versa" (it was at that realization that I turned my back on the idealism of hippie culture, which I'd idolized during my late teens). One day, somehow, we were all talking about rap and its sociological implications for the future, and a fellow student noted, "Well, there's [...]

For example, the theme of my big class presentation was, "Protest songs are affected by sociopolitical events, NOT vice-versa" (like, "Four Dead In Ohio" was affected by national outrage at the Kent State student shootingts--it didn't incur the outrage).
