Death Cult Summer Camp by Drunken Sufis It is bands like Drunken Sufis that make me miss CBGB and the old Continental where you could see 5 - 6 bands on a weekend night and there would always be a band that you hadn't heard of that would catch your ear. I remember being impressed the first time I saw The A.K.A's (who opened for The Dwarves) and Drunken Sufis sound like The A.K.A's crossed with the Dead Kennedy's. Drunken Sufis recently released Death Cult [...]

Sometimes it's hard to believe, but Exit Clov's been a band for 6.5 years. We've survived quite a lot together—relationships come and gone; broken down vans in Marshall, TX; 22-hour drives from Austin to DC; shady motels; and even the passing of loved ones. At the end of all of it, we're still making music together. As we've grown together, each of us has also started up other projects with friends involving art in many forms. We've all branched out beyond Exit Clov as musicians & songwriters, crafters, [...]
Monday: Bottle Up & Go + No Place @ The Studio at Webster Hall 8pm FREE [ info ] There really is no better way to kick off a week than to have the opportunity to catch a free show! Tonight's free performance come courtesy of Bottle Up & Go and up-and-comers No Place. We are only vaguely familiar with No Place, but Bottle Up & Go played last year's After the Jump Fest and were a pretty solid act from what I remember. All though I was pretty wrecked at that point so [...]

Well, this was totally unexpected. Two D.C. bands with close ties to Knox Road, Exit Clov and Jukebox the Ghost , have teamed up with various members of each to form a side-project, Drunken Sufis . Drunken Sufis display a political conspiracy-themed punk music so entirely different than the melodic pop rock of both Exit Clov and Jukebox the Ghost - with songs that range from, if I may steal a line from their press release, "30-second spaz-prog bursts ("Jeff Gannon Reprise"), to angular dance punk ("I Know Where AIDS Comes From"), to dual-guitar freakouts ("Neo-Con [...]

What do you get when you combine the melodic pop nature of D.C. based indie outfits Jukebox the Ghost and Exit Clov? But of course an "angular," "abrasive," "rude," and "loud" new punk side-project called Drunken Sufis . It certainly sounds hard to believe, but a "political conspiracy-themed" punk band, reminiscent of the Minutemen, Fugazi, the Dismemberment Plan, Rage Against the Machine, and early XTC is what the crazy kids of the two outfits are involved these days. In fact, things are going so well that they've already got a debut full-length to their name, a 11-track [...]
Interesting. Just a few days after Jukebox the Ghost returned to action with a whole slew of new songs at the Rock and Roll / Instrumental Analysis anniversary party, comes news that guitarist/vocalist Tommy Siegel has a brand new side-project called Drunken Sufis . The band, which bills itself as "a political-conspiracy-themed spaz-punk band", features Tommy alongside several members of Washington, D.C.'s Exit Clov . The band is preparing to release its debut album, Americans Fuck , which was recorded over the course of two days with Devin Ocampo (of Medications [...]

Tonight is the start of 2007's version of The District's Awake! Music Festival or DAM! Fest as it is so eloquently marketed. As they are about to takeover the city, we found it only fitting that we do a preview of the first night. Since I'm too exhausted to wax poetic on all of these bands, I'll give quick comments on each bill, hook you up with some mp3s and allow you to map out your night. The Red and The Black (Doors @ 8:30) I feel that this bill exemplifies [...]
