It's taken me weeks to finally get around to writing something about Hornet Leg , which is fitting considering it took months before I finally got around to giving the band's latest LP a spin. Now, you get to read about and listen to them in just a matter of minutes. It's like magic. The Portland trio/duo/solo-act released their newest full-length Still Life ( Stankhouse ) in October criminally under the radar. Led by Chris Sutton-who's guitarred in Calvin Johnson's Dub Narcotic Sound System , C.O.C.O [...]

mp3: dub narcotic sound system - monkey hips and rice ... [buy] i recently unearthed a mix cd that i unfortunately still remember making very late one evening in probably my sophomore or junior year of high school. i'm going to save myself the shame of recounting its contents.. but amid the various tracks expounding on the joys of illicit substances and the like was one true gem i hadn't listened to in years.... "monkey hips and rice". aw, spaghetti arms, name your price. it's a calvin johnson classic. i'm [...]

Calvin Johnson, former Beat Happening front man and K Records head honcho, is going on tour with his brand new band, The Hive Dwellers. The tour will kick off on April 14 with K newbies Chain and the Gang, featuring Ian Svenious (Nation of Ulysses, the Make-Up, Weird War, etc.) Interestingly, aside from the front men, the two groups will consist of the same members — Bret Lyman (Bad Thoughts), Brian Weber (Dub Narcotic Sound System), Sarah Pedal, and Fred Thomas (Saturday Looks Good to Me, City Center). - Jon Lorenz [...]
Some good news to share: - Former Regina Police Service Chief Calvin Johnston (not to be confused with Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening and Dub Narcotic Sound System ) is running for the Liberals in Regina Palliser. During his service as Regina's top cop, Johnston repeatedly proved himself to be a stand-up-guy with a keen understanding of a broad array of justice-related issues. He should have a decent shot, especially since the incumbent MP, Conservative Dave Batters, is stepping down to deal with a benzo addiction . Those conservatives...the rhetoric sure [...]

finals have been pretty bad this year, and are only about to get worse. but, as with most things (not feeling twee enough, crippling sorrow), i find that a little calvin johnson can help out a lot. i recently discovered his post- beat happening (there's a reunion that needs to happen) collective dub narcotic sound system . their sound has been called 'indie-funk', as it incorporated a lot of stuff (r&b, reggae, primitive electronica) you didn't see a lot in 90s indie. "monkey hips and rice" is the most fun [...]
Regular readers may have noticed our new, shiny music player from Yahoo! It hovers in the bottom left corner of any Moose web page with music files in it, it quietly loads up those music files and adds them to a playlist that you can listen to as you read the posts. We've been looking [...]
Dub Narcotic Sound System featuring Lois Maffeo "Ship To Shore" - Dub Narcotic produced many strong tracks in their day -- at this point in time, their entire back catalog is a treasure trove of potential samples -- but this single with Lois Maffeo stands as their most fully realized piece of music. Maffeo's sweet, gently soulful voice provide the strongest melodic hooks in "Ship To Shore," but the song is really all about the steady, melancholy click and throb of the rhythm section. The guitar and keyboard parts mostly provide color and texture, and are so [...]

After months of speculation it has happened: The Ultramod Compound was demolished. Apparently it happened sometime over the past weekend. I got a call from my former roommate Tony Evans ( Garbage Island ) Tuesday afternoon telling me about it. I ran shows there from 1996-2003 and then the other guys in the house continued the theme but with more local bands and fewer touring bands. Previous to my living there the guys in Ceiling Fan (R.I.P) had started the phenomenon by throwing [...]
Calvin Johnson swaggers into Todd Wehr Hall tonight as part of Art vs. Craft . I'm not sure what to expect, having never seen him live.

Firstly, I would suffer a million awkward and uncomfortable shows with the house lights on and excessive eye contact for just this one song: Dub Narcotic Sound System - Fuck Shit up Julie Doiron is a beacon of light in the dirty despicable world. Allen shines pretty brightly too. Her current tour features guys from Shotgun and Jaybird , The Constantines and Woolly Leaves . It was more than enough to make me nostalgic for the epic summer of 2002: [...]

Godchildren of Soul (with General Johnson & Joey Ramone): Rockaway Beach From Anyone Can Join (Rhino, 1994) Dub Narcotic Sound System: Shake-A-Puddin' From 7" (K, 1996). Also on Boot Party . (Editor's Note: These summer song picks come from Doug Wolk , last seen here plugging some James Brown-related rarities . Wolk has been killing it on the music tip lately...makes you wonder why dude doesn't have an audioblog of his own...can it [...]
