This past weekend marked the sixth annual Downtown Music Festival — a miniature SXSW-style event featuring plenty of new, rising artists, scattered across multiple NYC venues, all within a one-mile radius. A seasoned festival goer knows there are two approaches to these types of festivals: choose a venue and watch all the artists playing there, or exert the most mental and physical energy possible by attempting to catch multiple sets at overlapping venues. Of course, we chose the latter, knowing exactly what we were getting ourselves into. Sort of. Racing to six or seven shows a night in [...]

Today and tomorrow, Downtown Festival will overtake the small venues of the Lower East Side, giving you the chance to see some of the biggest rising stars of the indie scene in an intimate setting. Over 50 artists will appear on the stages of Bowery Ballroom, Mercury Lounge, Rockwood Music Hall, Pianos, Cake Shop, Tammany Hall, Element and Capitale. Be sure to get there early to see the opening bands, too, as you’ll be sure to discover some great upcoming talent! This year, the festival is also expanding to six other metropolitan downtown areas, including Philadelphia, Toronto, [...]

The latest from Titus Andronicus-alum Andrew Cedermark, "Canis Major" combines the nostalgia-heavy "lazy suburban afternoon" rock of Cedermark's northern New Jersey contemporaries with the psych-pop buoyancy of Grizzly Bear. Cedermark may have the most emphatically "pop" aspirations of the Underwater Peoples collective (which counts Real Estate and Ducktails as members); "Canis Major" borrows from alt-country, guitar-obsessed British indie, and the style of lighthearted groove rock that saw its heyday as sitcom themes throughout the 90s. Taking a big step away from his more isolated earlier work (like the beautifully chilly Moon Deluxe ), "Canis Major" is Cedermark's most approachable [...]

The Flower Lane is the the third studio album from Real Estate guitarist Matt Mondaline after forming Ducktails in a basement in 2006. Since then Ducktails has been welcomed into the indie scene with open arms, supportive fans, and international tours, including a North American tour this spring. There’s no doubt The Flower Lane came out just in time for the impending spring and will be the soundtrack for front porch parties and late night strolls for the next three months. Though the album slowly steers away from Ducktails DIY-garage style of music, the album takes a new [...]
