Real Estate is a side project made up of Martin Courtney, Etienne Duguay (of Predator Vision), Alex Bleeker, and Matt Mondanile of Ducktails . We received a digital copy of their new self-titled 7" and have been listening to it non-stop. Three lo-fi songs titled Suburban Beverage , Black Lake , and Old Folk Real Estate - Old Folks Real Estate - Suburban Beverage [...]

Real Estate is Matt Mondanile (aka Ducktails ) and friends. Not unlike Ducktails, Real Estate makes vaguely tropical lo-fi beach pop that reinforces my disdain for winter. A little more straightforward/less droning than Ducktails' stuff, for sure, but just as warm and sunny. These two tracks appear on the band's upcoming self-titled, white vinyl 7", which is due out February 1 as the first release on Underwater Peoples : mp3: real estate :: black lake real estate :: suburban beverage [...]

Here's a tropical slice of psychedelia from Ducktails, a.k.a. New Jersey musician Matt Mondanile. "Beach Point Pleasant" kind of reminds me of Panda Bear & El Guincho , without sounding too much like either one. Visitation Rites does a nice job putting it into words, saying : "A meandering pentatonic guitar line bubbles leisurely upwards to the surface of the mix like a 1960's Cambodian pop recording passed through an underwater chamber—wah wah in the fullest sense of the term. Meanwhile, ambient casiotones layer gently into the space between loop and guitar melody like [...]

Thanks to Raven Sings the Blues for assisting in my effort to extend summer for one more day (despite the fact that it gets dark at 5:00 PM now), via the laid back, dubby tropical sounds of New Jersey native Ducktails . According to Visitation Rites , this particular beach jam is "built on a 2-second instrumental loop from Gétatchèwe Kassa 's "Tezeta Slow" (a song featured on an installment of the incredible Ethiopiques series), which goes a long way to explaining why it's so rad: mp3: [...]

New Jersey's Ducktails has hit the ground sprinting and he doesn't show signs of letting up. Working under both the names Predator Vision and Ducktails, Matt Mondanile's released a few cassettes and a recent 7" that bear some attention. Taking a laid-back beach guitar vibe and mixing in a healthy dose of dubby synth and dime-store drum machine, the rough early works have matured into a swirling stew of duct tape psychedelia. Perplexingly full of California sun for a Jersey native, the newest batch of tracks on the Beach Point Pleasant 7" are a tad late for summer [...]

OKAY GUYS, this tropical stuff has been taking over my life and I need to lock it down. Not that any obsessions with High Places, Wavves, Beaches, Holy Shit, Abe Vigoda, El Guincho, Lucky Dragons, or any of the below artists who channel a similar beach/sun god are going to end any time soon, but seriously, what's with all the palm trees in my headphones? All the polyrhythms and bubbles, they're all like that picture up the top there and it's a bit of an overload for this blog and my iTunes and I'm seeking and island, oh, wait, no, [...]

This month, Breaking World Records releases a limited edition 7 inch by Ducktails, a.k.a. Brooklyn-based musician Matt Mondanile, marking the onset of fall with a prayer for eternal summer. Though he proudly identifies suburban New Jersey as his heart's true home, Mondanile's sound is equally the product of four years on the Western Massachussetts noise scene, a prolonged stay in an immigrant neighborhood in Berlin and a thriving re-issue culture that brings psychedelic and world music gems back from the dead. 'Beach Point Pleasant," the album's first track and centerpiece, is built on a 2-second [...]
Ducktails - Backyard I just found out about Ducktails when I was checking out some recent playlists of the Guitar Media radio program back over in New Zealand and for some reason the name Ducktails instantly made me want to check it out. Anyway, it's hot sauce for sure, this guy puts out various amazingly designed tapes full of tropical chlorinated water. This is from his new one, Ducktails II . It was recorded in his parents basement and totally smacks of surburban light and picket fences, cosmic and tropical, just for a [...]
