Welcome to the first ever PRTTY MCH MZING NWSLTTR! I am experimenting a bit with what I want to do with this newsletter. This time, it took the form of My Imaginary Radio Show. Who knows what it might be next time? I might like this radio show thing and keep it that way, or try something new all together. But don't worry, the key elements of my newsletter are still intact. We still have the Music, the MP3s, and we also have a really, really awesome giveaway. The sponsors are great! If you would like to [...]

the core of the band hot chip , alexis taylor and joe goddard, began songwriting while studying music together at the south london elliot school. after playing around with different elements of sounds and infectious textures and producing them into a few home recorded demo eps, the label astralwerks and dfa signed them immediately and in 2004, the birth of their debut coming on strong was released. challenged by the idea of progressing, hot chip shared critical acclaim and much success with their second album the warning yet, still maintained a focused sentimental direction. [...]
Duffy, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Los Campesinos!, Shirley Bassey, Super Furry Animals: Welsh Greats! I meant to publish this yesterday, actually on St David's Day, but I never got round to it, mainly due to the fact I was chewing my fingers to the bone listening to Arsenal vs Aston Villa. The Welsh have an uncanny knack [...]

Welcome to Friday. The end of the week. This week, it's also the end of the month. It's also leap day. Once every four years, or something like that. The pickin's was kinda slim for this week's mixtape, and I had to really forrage around for some new stuff to post. In the end, there is stuff from artists I'm pretty excited about before, but after a few listens each, I'm not sure about these new tracks. I guess that's what the mixtape if for- a week's worth of listens sometimes improves my disposition on a song. Anyway, I've got [...]

We mentioned Duffy a couple of weeks ago, and because her debut album "Rockferry" is coming out March 3, we figured we'd mention her again. We've been listening to her debut album a bit lately, and so far it's sounding pretty good. It's really retro, with a kind of 60's vibe and it has a nice feel to it. It's growing on us. Delayed Devotion is one of our favorite tracks on the album; it's a sassy song, in which Duffy accuses a man of taking a little to long to show he cares [...]

WOW: I've discovered a really amazing blog today -- Another Nickel in the Machine . I snagged this awesome photo from it -- how great do those chicks look? I used to wear these back in high school -- "brothel creepers" . (My friend just asked me how I ever got laid when I told her I wore these. HOW RUDE. What can I say, there was a huge mod revival in DC back in the day. SHUT.UP.) Great posts, lots of history & fantastic music. There's [...]
Duffy "Mercy" - Things to listen for: 1. Duffy's instruction to "hit the beat and take it to the verse now" only five seconds into the song. I like to think that without her direction, the keyboard player would have vamped on that part indefinitely, and the rest of the band would have just sorta stood around with slack jaws. 2. "Yeah, yeah, yeah," repeated in the general direction of Amy Winehouse, with a bit of a knowing smirk. [...]

While we all wait for Amy Winehouse to regain her sanity (Amy Amy Amy!), here are four soulful British females who might be able to hold you over. First, there's Adele . We hear her single Chasing Pavements is doing quite well over in England, and her debut album 19 has already dropped in the UK. 19 is a big more polished, and bit more poppy than Winehouse's amazing Back To Black , but Adele is still soulful and very youthful. In the heartfelt [...]

It's that time of year again- Superbowl Sunday and all. I'm not even entirely sure who's playing. I could really care less. I'm only interested in the commercials ... and the beer. I'm more concerned with Premiership Football this week, with the top three teams all away, and only 5 points between Chelsea and the top of the table. Anyway, whatever your weekend plans are, have a good one, and enjoy this week's mixtape. Tracklisting: American Music Club - San Francisco [...]

Expect to be hearing BIG things in the coming months about British retro-soul songstress, Duffy , after she drops her new single “Mercy” on February 25th. The 23-year old Welsh singer, who has drawn comparisons to Dusty Springfield already sold out most of her forthcoming UK tour . While I dig the retro-soul/R&B stylings and backing vocals, I’m not 100% sold on Duffy’s voice – it can be a bit nasal-y at times. Other than that, “Mercy,” is a solid track that might leave most of us asking, “Amy Who?” by [...]
Duffy - Mercy (video) Duffy - Mercy (MP3) | mirror Aimee Anne Duffy is a Welsh singer who has stirred a lot of buzz in the UK after her performance on Later with Jools Holland. Her soulful voice inevitably draws comparisons to Dusty Springfield. Her Bridget Bardot style looks also won't hurt her on the road to stardom. She's already selling out most shows in the UK and will likely be a
feist - i feel it all [ link 2 ] [good ol feist returns on the video front with yet another fun joy of life (this time with FIREWORKS!) collaboration with patrick daughters. i wonder how many times they had to rehearse with this one?] duffy - mercy [ link 2 ] [hailing from wales, duffy has been working with bernard butler (suede) for the past two years, honing her songwriting and [...]
Are you following the whole soap about Amy Winehouse? What a shame, all that talent gone down the (crack)pipe. I interviewed her years ago, after the release of the first album. She'd had a rough night (it was written all over her face, and her breath), but she was very frank, outspoken and funny too. But that was then. In the meantime, there are a lot of female Britsoulers ready to fill the hole Amy left (or will leave). There's Adele . There's Duffy . The latter got help from David McAlmont and Bernard Butler (ex-Suede), and her [...]

Fly Over Gallery - Return of the Living Dead (2007) Duffy - Mercy (mp3) [ video ]: The poppy onslaught of cute, white women singing fifties soul from across the Atlantic continues. While this trend is twisting the mainstream female vocal norm in an interesting way, there's something irksome about the time and place in which the influence is resurrecting. Amidst complex questions of [...]
Duffy is the latest in the line of top female vocalists to come to the fore in the UK. I saw that fellow Rock Sellout contributor Ceci had included Adele's "Chasing Pavements" in her Friday 5...this young lady completely blows Adele from the water! Her new single "Mercy" is set to be released on Feb 25th and will propel her to mega stardom. Tickets for her forthcoming tour are selling like hot cakes. Many artists are hyped by record companies and media alike, but Duffy is the real deal. Her soulful sound is a throwback to the [...]

BBC has unveiled their annual Sounds of 2008, which is basically their list of the unknown acts most likely to be known within the next 12 months. I must say, they've got a pretty good track record, having pinpointed the likes of 50 Cent, The Bravery and last year's choice Mika. Then again, I suppose any list built on the thoughts of 150 pundits has to hit some nails. And I'm talking about those long-as-Isengard, sharp-as-my-monkey's-nipples kinda nails. So anyways, this year's cornerstone is a lass named Adele. So start namedroppin', y'all. Here's the selected bunch, plus a [...]

If you like timeless pop music, you have to wing your way over to the Power Pop Criminals music blog and check out today's entry from Angelo's Power Pop Advent Calender. It only happens to be one of the best albums from the mid-nineties, and I was mug enough to sell my copy to some sneering muso prick for three sheckels at the Record and Tape Exchange in Notting Hill about six years ago. Grab the download whilst you can. It will be replaced by another download at the stroke of midnight. [...]
