Mark Lanegan & Duke Garwood - 'Black Pudding' (UK Release: 13 May '13) // Words: Simon Opie Mark Lanegan may well be the hardest working man in show business since the new millennium dawned, which isn’t bad considering that when he appeared with Queens Of The Stone Age back at the turn of the century, it was rumoured that he couldn’t manage to sing more than a handful of songs per night. Even so, that incarnation of QOTSA [...]
Where to begin with Mark Lanegan ’s voice? It’s a melted-down chainsaw. Soft beams of light shooting across a bubbling tar pit. A rusted tractor set ablaze amidst heavy downpour. Rich. Ragged. Ridiculous. It’s also one of the most uniquely expressive voices in American music – arguably similar to that of Tom Waits in its ability to extricate a sumptuously soulful croon from the sound of over-zealous vocal cord scrapings. But unlike the perma-hatted veteran, Lanegan never gives into the gnarl. He’s simply a vessel for sorrows that are resigned to [...]
London-based multi-instrumentalist Duke Garwood is set to release a new collaborative album with Mark Lanegan on May 14th via Ipecac recordings. Black Pudding marks the first time these two artists have worked together and according to Lanegan, working with Garwood was "one of the best experiences of his recording life." He also described Garwood as "one of his all time favorite artists." This borderline hero worship is quite evident on the record, as Lanegan quietly and respectfully defers to Garwood's years of experience and finely honed techniques. But Lanegan isn't the only one who cherishes the assistance that [...]
As it was recently announced, the heads of multi-instrumentalist Duke Harwood and Mark Lanegan have been smashed together for this brand new record, Black Pudding . Unusual? Not especially, Lanegan has worked with the likes of Belle and Sebastian and The Afghan Wigs to name a couple, however, as he's cited Garwood as his "all time favourite artists" this is exceptional. Sombre, arpeggiated chords, nylon strings plucked with soft fingertips; 'Black Pudding', the title track stirs. Those flashes of dissonance and gunfire quadruplets allude to something warm and wonderful. Pit it against the [...]
By Dominic Allen May 09, 2013 This collaboration between Mark Lanegan and Duke Garwood is a bit of a head-scratcher. Potentially this stems from this being the first such project where Lanegan has been the main attraction rather than in an equal or supporting roll. After multiple listens this reviewer cannot quite decide if this is, as the man himself declares, the best piece of work that Lanegan has done or if it is Lanegan having a bit of a breather after the emotional exertions of his happy album [...]
Having previously teamed with Isobel Campbell and Greg Dulli on separate projects, grunge survivor, Mark Lanegan is no stranger to the collaborative album. His latest effort, however, an album recorded with English bluesman, Duke Garwood , may have you heading for google as you hit play. Garwood's name doesn't come with much recognition on this side of the Atlantic. Fret not. Lanegan is said to be a huge fan of Garwood's and "Pentecostal," the first cut released from Black Pudding ( May 14th on Ipecac ) finds Lanegan back on the well-tread road of American roots music. [...]
Master bluesmen are thin on the ground in South London, a landscape unsuited to the trappings and clichés of the genre. But it is down there, amidst the grey arterial routes, Victorian terraces and leafy parks that Duke Garwood makes his home. Garwood's Dreamboatsafari sees him expanding on the spacious, dusty room blues found on previous albums Emerald Palace and The Sand That Falls. Read more »
Wooden Wand || Café Oto, Hackney || 29 June 2012 Review by Chris T Popper Ever since I knew Wooden Wand was touring our little island again I have been in a state of high anticipation… mixed in with a sizeable chunk of excitement. In February 2011, Dr Roddy and myself were lucky enough to interview and have a couple of ‘sharpeners’ with James Jackson Toth in York and witnessed an excellent show. So hopes were high for his appearance at the Café Oto in Hackney with [...]

Mark Lanegan & Duke Garwood: Black Pudding
Black Pudding is a souvenir record for Mark Lanegan and Duke Garwood fans, an album full of theme songs for gunslingers, bluesman and desert-wandering derelicts. For the past decade or so, Mark Lanegan has been on something of a mission to expand his sonic palette, both through his collaborations and in his solo work. Hard rock, electronica and country-folk have all factored into his sprawling repertoire of late, in turn distancing him more and more from the blues blueprint of his earliest solo records. The compulsive collaborator that he is, it isn't as odd as it may initially [...]

Album Review: Mark Lanegan and Duke Garwood – Black Pudding
The whiskey, blood, and holy water from last year’s estimable Blues Funeral had barely dried up when Mark Lanegan partnered with English bluesman Duke Garwood to record Black Pudding , an album that crawls, breathes, and refurbishes the acoustic blues of Lanegan’s early solo work. Here, as the shared billing suggests, Lanegan’s rugged voice and Garwood’s delicate playing intend to speak to each other. Only part of the time, though, do the two seem to be participating in the same conversation. The trouble with Black Pudding [...]
Mark Lanegan & Duke Garwood's Black Pudding Released Today via Ipecac Recordings
Mark Lanegan and Duke Garwood’s debut collaboration, Black Pudding, is available today via Ipecac Recordings. NPR called the release “a powerful, meditative new album,” while both Q Magazine and Record Collector Magazine awarded the 12-track album four-star reviews. Clash Magazine proclaimed the record a “bewitching masterpiece.” Lanegan, never one to shy away from unique collaborations, has previously worked with Belle & Sebastian's Isobel Campbell, The Afghan Whigs' Greg Dulli and as a member of The Screaming Trees, Soulsavers [...]

Album Reviews: Mark Lanegan & Duke Garwood - Black Pudding
Mark Lanegan has been stalking the music industry with the hangman on his trail for what seems like a very sombre eternity since the heady days of the Screaming Trees. Perhaps now as well known for his collaborations as his own solo work, Lanegan’s teaming up with the equally nefarious Duke Garwood is only surprising in terms of the gulf in popularity between the two. 'Black Pudding' won’t alter this for either artist but then again, neither artist hardly expect it to: a dense, acoustic guitar driven lurch through Lanegan’s murky, wheezy blues is unlikely to send the duo into [...]
