The whiskey, blood, and holy water from last year’s estimable Blues Funeral  had barely dried up when Mark Lanegan partnered with English bluesman Duke Garwood to record Black Pudding , an album that crawls, breathes, and refurbishes the acoustic blues of Lanegan’s early solo work. Mark Lanegan and Duke Garwood’s debut collaboration, Black Pudding, is available today via Ipecac Recordings. NPR called the release “a powerful, meditative new album,” while both Q Magazine and Record Collector Magazine awarded the 12-track album four-star reviews. As it was recently announced, the heads of multi-instrumentalist Duke Harwood and Mark Lanegan have been smashed together for this brand new record, Black Pudding . Unusual? Potentially this stems from this being the first such project where Lanegan has been the main attraction rather than in an equal or supporting roll. After multiple listens this reviewer cannot quite decide if this is, as the man himself declares, the best piece of work that Lanegan has done or if it is Lanegan having a bit of a breather after the emotional exertions of his happy album [...]

Having previously teamed with Isobel Campbell and Greg Dulli on separate projects, grunge survivor, Mark Lanegan is no stranger to the collaborative album. His latest effort, however, an album recorded with English bluesman, Duke Garwood , may have you heading for google as you hit play. Garwood's name doesn't come with much recognition on this side of the Atlantic. Fret not. Lanegan is said to be a huge fan of Garwood's and "Pentecostal," the first cut released from Black Pudding ( May 14th on Ipecac ) finds Lanegan back on the well-tread road of American roots music.
