Here's what a fucking moron I am. I accidentally overdosed on Sudafed yesterday and wound up not getting a wink of sleep, with an insane heart rate I couldn't calm. It was one of the most uncomfortable nights of my life. I thought I was taking 6-hour Sudafed but I was taking 12-hour. The instructions [...]
What you have here is the most perfect psyche pastiche ever recorded. Everyone knew that The Dukes of Stratophear were really XTC dressed in clothes from their parents' attics. You couldn't hear those vocal harmonies and not know that. Yet at the same time My Love Explodes is a note perfect reproduction of sixties psychedelic pop, right down to the hilariously sneering vocal inflections. These guys had transcended mundane reality. They were illuminated. They were better than you normals. Much love too for the production, which considers that a second where [...]
Hi friends. I hope each of your individual weekends were eventful. Mine sure was. Wait, what did I do on - oh, right. I celebrated my five-year LA anniversary on Friday night (sure it was a night early, but who cares?) at El Chavo. It was a pretty good time until it wasn't, at which [...]
Sometime during the stone-grey early months of 1985, the members of XTC stumbled upon a time portal manifested in the form of a wardrobe in Captain Sensible's cobbled and thatched suburban London cottage. What the band was doing there no one can say, but as they stepped inside the portal, making their way past row after row of paisley frocks and multi-hued, four-in-hand ties, they were

TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh man oh man oh man! This is it! I'm a nervous wreck between getting everything ready, dealing with some bike issues - really? bike issues the week of my ride ???? - and what I'm hoping is just congestion from pollen?? Canadian Ma-Ma was in town last night on their way back up Toronto from Florida, then we have a rider driving up from Colorado to participate tomorrow, etc, etc, etc...... yeah, I'm [...]

With a newly remastered, limited edition presentation of the Dukes of Stratosphear's entire catalog just out, the guiding guru of XTC's alter-ego band discusses the past, the present, and a particularly severe case of 'bad vibes'. They had intriguing, daydreaming names like The Move, The Blossom Toes, and Skip Bifferty, song titles suggesting a trip to 'Itchycoo Park', warnings about a 'Night of Fear', or a suggestion to stop and 'See Emily Play.' Unlike their American counterparts, the British psychedelic movement was heavily linked to the studio-bound pop pouring forth from international phenomenons The Beatles. "It was all very [...]

Photography by Tsuru Okay, I begged and bugged you, over and over again, you guys really came through, as you know, but little did I know you'd get your money's worth this much on Saturday! Before we begin though, I want you to get "in the mood", the bicycle mood. So, first I need you to push play (while you download, of course) a lil' mixtape we put together... A bare-bones affair of bicycle themed songs to get your legs a-twitchin', your heart a-pumpin', and your [...]

I remember the first time I ever saw XTC it was in 1978 on the music show Revolver , I was in the bar of St Andrews University, I worked for the University , I wasn’t a student. Revolver was an ITV music show, which preceded Channel 4’s The Tube ; it only ran for one series of 8 episodes and had Peter [...]

Frank Yang The most beautiful day of the year so far turned into one of the foulest just in time for the early-evening start of Bat For Lashes' Saturday night date at the Mod Club, the first for this leg of their North American tour in support of their much-heralded new album Two Suns . A more ambitious writer might try to draw some parallel between the dramatic weather shift and the themes of duality that run through the new record - I'll just blame a high pressure [...]
NPR is streaming St. Vincent's Actor for two weeks (MP3). Over on Spinner, it looks like it's the "I Love the 80s edition" of their album streams with new releases from Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys, a box set...

At the height of their fame, XTC tried to anonymously release music under the name, Dukes of Stratosphear. Of course, it didn’t take long to pin the tail on the donkey, as Andy Partridge’s signature voice and the quirky, off-kilter pop style gave them away. As the Dukes, they were able to dig into their old record collections as they focused on more of a psychedelic 60’s sound while remaining true to XTC’s sound. The Dukes of Stratosphear releases have been reissued before but are being re-released today on Andy’s own Ape House Record label with collector-friendly bonus [...]
One of the greatest psychedelic records not made during the crazy era of psychedelia was the classic Psonic Psunspot released in 1987 by XTC's psychedelic alter-ego Dukes of Stratosphear. That album along with the 25 O'Clock EP that preceded it have been reissued on with bonus tunes. My old vinyl copy of it was poorly mishandled once during an acid flashback and it sounds great to hear these

The Dukes Of Stratosphear was XTC's idea of an April Fool's Day joke back in 1985, issuing the 25 O'Clock EP under that moniker and disguised as a foppish '60s Carnaby Street psychedelic band. It was Austin Powers in the era of Back To The Future, and it was brilliant. The lineup included Sir John [...]

Everyone concerned knew The Dukes Of Statosphear was the alter ego for XTC, though it was of little consequence, considering the resulting adoration and sheer quality of their EP, 25 0clock , and long player Psonic Psunspot . Both titles were re-released together in the late 80s as Chips from the Chocolate Factory; and now, Andy Partridge's own Ape label has reissued them again, with the bonus of previously unpublished demo versions as well as video. These limited editions come in a hardback digibook featuring brand new artwork and the booklet includes new sleeves notes by Andy, Colin [...]
Culture of Me has Crystal Antlers ' newest video for their single "Andrew" off of their recent album Tentacles along with a free MP3 copy. The visually entralling video is only traunced by the 60's induced rock atmosphere of "Andrew," thrown through an encapsulating array of colors and lights. See for yourself. Crystal Antlers - Andrew - MP3 Jay Reatard's crash-induced "DOA" lasts only about a minute, but it's crumpled, paper mache, trashed beauty made of birds is [...]
