Frank Yang Even without the " NME Presents" endorsement attached to the tour, I suspect the White Lies / Friendly Fires / Soft Pack show at Lee's Palace on Tuesday would have been a sell-out. All three acts came with their own built-in buzz, so in fact the venerable British publication may have been counting themselves lucky to be associated with the tour rather than the other way around. Sole non-Brits on the bill, The Soft Pack - formerly known as The Muslims - were tasked with kicking [...]

The Dukes Of Stratosphear 25 O' Clock & Psonic Psunspot [Reissues] Ape House Records [1985,1987; re: 2009] Fire Drill Review: It is always interesting how you listen to a reissue like it was the first time and your opinions change. The main question always is - does the album stand up to the test of time? For XTC they released the 25 O' Clock EP [1985] and Psonic Psunspot [1987] under the moniker The Dukes Of Stratosphear in order to [...]
The Dukes of Stratosphear were from 1984-1987 what the Foxboro Hot Tubs were last year: a secret side-project launched by the members of a pretty high-profile rock out. The projected started with little fanfare, but given the fact that Sir John Johns, The Red Curtain, Lord Cornelius Plum, and E.I.E.I. Owen were in fact Andy Partridge, Colin Moulding, Dave Gregory, and Ian Gregor, the same Andy Partridge, Colin Moulding, Dave Gregory, and Ian Gregor behind XTC , the secret was revealed relatively quickly. Still, neither didn't that stop The Dukes of Stratosphear from releasing both an [...]

Back in the day, the great band XTC recorded a few albums under the moniker Dukes of Stratosphear , pressing their music in the way of 60s psychedelia. They recorded two albums, under this name, 25 O'Clock and Psonic Psunspot , both which are pretty hard to come by nowadays. Lucky for us, a certain Andy Partridge of XTC fame will be reissuing said albums on Ape House. Also, staff-writer Corey would be mad if we didn't also tell you to check [...]

There was a psychedelic re-awakening of sorts in the late 1980's, due in part to the pervasive cultural trend towards retrospective of the late-1960's "Summer of Love". In the midst of this, there appeared the psych-pop of The Dukes of Stratosphear . The Dukes were a spin-off of the much-loved British pop/punk act XTC , whom many consider the most important British rock act of the 1980's. Though they worked feverishly to cloak themselves in anonymous monikers and lack of fanfare for the release of their first EP, 25 O'Clock, [...]

Wow! Just got a press release stating that Andy Partridge's Ape label will be re-releasing the two excellent Dukes of Stratosphear albums on April 21, complete with bonus demos and new liner notes! I'll let that email speak for itself: The Dukes of Stratosphear came about in the 80s with a release of an EP (25 O'Clock) by those cheeky lads in Swindon, UK, otherwise known as XTC. It was a side-project put out semi-anonymously, without fanfare, which came about from a shared love of 60s-inspired psychedelic, Lewis Carroll-tinged power [...]
In 1985, the members of XTC set out to record an album that sounded like it was recorded in 1967. They recorded an EP titled 25 O'Clock under the name The Dukes Of Stratosphear . All three of the band's members adopted pseudonyms as well: Andy Partridge became Sir John Johns, Colin Moulding was the Red Curtain and David Gregory was referred to as Lord Cornelius Plum. Gregory's brother Ian also got involved with the project and was known as E.I.E.I. Owen. [...]
Great Northern - Fingers (mp3) As promised, here is the second mp3 I was granted permission to share from Great Northern's upcoming release Remind Me Where The Light Is . The album is sure to be on my favorites list this year. If you happen to pass my car on any given day of the week, you just may hear me singing (badly) along with it. Check out my rave review for an mp3 of "Houses". Both tracks will be taken down in two weeks. Apparently the band was played in a recent episode [...]

One of the greatest psychedelic records not made during the crazy era of psychedelia was the classic Psonic Psunspot released in 1987 by XTC's psychedelic alter-ego Dukes of Stratosphear . That album along with the 25 O'Clock EP that preceded it are being reissued on April 6 with bonus tunes. My old vinyl copy of it was poorly mishandled once during an acid flashback and it sounds great to hear these songs again after so long. My [...]

MP3: The Dukes of the Stratosphear - "My Love Explodes" MP3: The Dukes of the Stratosphear - "Brainiac's Daughter" The Dukes of the Stratosphear, the mid-'80s psychedelic psyde-project pseudonym of XTC , have upcoming reissues of both of their releases, Psionic Psunspot and 25 O'Clock . Each CD is packaged in a 24-page hardback digibook featuring brand new artwork, archival photos, and all-new liner notes. These are out 3/24 on Andy Partridge's Ape label. Vinyl reissues will arrive later [...]
So XTC has decided to reissue their Dukes of Stratosphear album , Chips From the Chocolate Fireball , on April 7th. Guess what blog decided the write a post about them 4 years ago?? Uf, these old links are killing me. The good news is that I'm re-uploading the songs from that post for those curious souls who follow the link. Enjoy!
I love me some XTC. I also love their alter-ego The Dukes Of Stratosphear. They only ever released two records - 1985's 25 O'Clock EP and 1987's Psonic Psunspot. The former is a blast of nugget-y psychedelic garage rock, a glorious tribute to the '60s. It's follow up is a more polished affair, but mines a similar vein of music. These were combined for a remastered reissue in 2002 under the title

Kelley Stoltz 's records remind me of my grandmother's house. There's warm light hitting the best corners, mismatched furniture everywhere and a oddly comforting musty smell is unavoidable It just feels right. That comforting feel is what really appeals to me about Stoltz. It probably comes from working in a used record store, the kind of place where all you do all day is sort through and listen to old vinyl. Last time I saw him perform he was dropping references to Ken Nordine and Pharoah Sanders. He sounds like an old soul [...]
Bobb Trimble (1982) Harvest of Dreams There is nobody quite like Bobb Trimble in the world of rock n roll. Many more famous and wealthier musicians ( Thurston Moore is one I can think of) have praised his unique body of work. Trimble released two great underappreciated records in the early 80's (private press - real lo-fi). His vision is very deep, personal, and absolutely original with a strong outsider, late night feel (think brooding dark mind trips). His vocals are like [...]

" a brilliant psychedelic pop pastiche that lovingly combines morsels of early Pink Floyd, middle Beatles, Electric Prunes, Hollies, Kinks, and dozens of other, like-hearted bands ..."-- The Stranger I'm a little embarrassed to admit that up until a few weeks ago, I was completely unaware of XTC 's short-lived mid-'80s bizarro psychedelic alter-egos, The Dukes of Stratosphear . The Dukes were Andy Partridge and XTC's spot-on homage to the music they grew up listening to, and they've since been [...]
The Dukes of Stratosphear - What In The World??... Correct me if I'm wrong - no, second thoughts, I'm too bone idle to research these things properly so I know I will be wrong, there's no need to tell me - we have Nick Nicely to thank for everything. Or blame, depending on your viewpoint. Mr Nicely equals "Hilly Fields". Hang on, I need to take a moment here, I'm beginning to go woozy with
