Here we are, on the cusp of our 100 Best Songs of 2012; a four-part series of only the best and top songs from 2012. After a busy year here ...
10. Frightened Rabbit

ILLUSTRATION BY LYDIA CONKLIN Whether a result of the growth in music’s DIY culture, a reaction to our declining attention span or simply a method to explore new sonic territory, EPs (and at times, 73) have increasingly become the bread and butter of almost all new projects. A tightly packed unit of songs, EPs allow musicians the opportunity to present a cohesive, thematic tone - a method sometimes preferable to the sprawl of a full-length release. They can also act as a way to showcase a few songs with starkly different styles, acting as a sort of appetizer [...]

(photo by cubagallery ) These are 50 tracks that delighted, inspired and fascinated us in 2012 and that we think are worthy of remembering long after the year is over. We present them here in highly unscientific ordered list form, with Matt's songs marked with a "-MG" and my choices with a "-TJ" next to them. To better spread the love, we've stuck with the one song per artist rule. Click here to download all the tracks in a zip and subscribe to our Spotify Playlist to stream them all. Enjoy y'all! [...]

Dum Dum Girls started out as a punky and plucky girl group led by Kristin Gundred (formerly of San Diego’s Grand Ole Party) a.k.a. Dee Dee, but life outside of rock and roll has waged a toll on the band the past couple years, pushing the group to develop a mature and sophisticated sound. Their recent five-track EP End of Daze was recorded in 2011 and 2012 with Sune Rose Wagner (The Raveonettes) and Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, The Go-Go’s) and features four originals and a cover of Strawberry Switchblade's "Trees and Flowers." As Gundred processed the unexpected illness [...]
Best of 2012 continued. Fave covers are up, and top tracks and albums will be posted this week. Keeping the albums separate from the EPs again this year, because how can you judge a 5 song EP to 17 song album? And let me say, for the millionth time, more EPs please! Perfect introduction to a new band, perfect release that keeps me happy between full-lengths from a favorite band. So thank you to these bands/artists for indulging my craze by putting out some excellent EPs. Honorable Mentions: [...]

Here is the Best of 2012. Since it's 2012, why not make it a Top 12. I am counting down the Top 12 EPs that was released in 2012. It maybe a surprised when checking this Top 12 list that there is alot of Ottawa acts. Sorry if there is no description since I am swamped with various stuff happening in the month of December. Check it out! 1. Roberta Bondar - Roberta Bondar EP [ Review ] [...]
By Seraphina Lotkhamnga There is no doubt that L.A. bands had a fruitful 2012. Not only did Buzz Bands LA taste-test more than 140 local albums [our list is coming Friday], we had more than plenty to choose from when it came to EPs. Normally, I would stick to top albums and top songs for year-end lists, but I found myself playing a surprising amount of EPs (in their entirety) during the last 12 months — which doesn't happen often. EPs [...]

Bloc Party stopped by the Hollywood Palladium in support of their latest album Four . Some of the highlights included the delay pedal madness of "Octopus," the detuned crunch of "Kettling," and older surefire body-moving classics "Banquet," "Helicopter," and "This Modern Love." Dum Dum Girls overcame some early microphone problems for their patented reverb-soaked jams. Check out the gallery above and the setlist below. Read More...

Photos and words by Debi Del Grande Having teased us at HARD in August, Bloc Party came back for a full solid gig at The Hollywood Palladium. With the release of Four , Kele Okereke (vox/guitar/falsetto forever/always smiling and sporting a Lakers' sweatshirt), Russell Lissack (lead guitar/all of his expression comes out through his fingers, Gordon Moakes (bass/backing vox/synths/glockenspiel/ok, basically everything), and Matt Tong (killing it on drums) are one solid unit. On tour with the guys are The Dum Dum Girls, who were able to fill the venue with their dreamy sound. [...]

Bloc Party encountered a crowd chomping at the bit in Oakland, but fell just short of meeting everyone's unrealistically high expectations.

Year after year, the ladies in music prove they can hang with the boys, and 2012 was no different. In fact, 2012 was such a big year for the ladies, i'm gonna have to break this into a multiple posts. I tried to narrow it down, but how in the heck am I supposed to decide between the likes of Amanda Palmer, Frankie Rose, Patti Smith, and Sera Cahoone? Exactly. So without further ado, enjoy the first installment of good, from some of the most talented ladies in music. [...]
