Flatfoot , out of East Lansing, is a band in the vein of Uncle Tupelo and Sun Volt; going back further of bands like Dumptruck and The Embarrassment. They mix roots music with a kind of punk rock feel. Their new record is called Blue Water . These guys, playing this kind of music, in this day and age are clearly underdogs. So help `em out with a follow , a link or a purchase . Dirt Shirt
As for blasts from the past, "Going Nowhere" can be found on Dumptruck's For The Country . For more, take in "Back Where I Belong" .

Dumptruck: Back Where I Belong [ buy it ] Dumptruck, one of college radio's favorite jangly guitar pop bands, was formed by two Connecticut songwriters who met in Boston. Seth Tiven and Kirk Swan seemed to share an affinity for the dual guitar attack of Television and the morose lyrics of Joy Division. For their second album, Positively Dumptruck , Tiven, Swan and their rhythm section teamed up with producer Don Dixon whose recent credits included R.E.M., Guadalcanal [...]
Here's me playing bass in Dumptruck circa 1986. Seth Tiven is singing and playing guitar. Kirk Swan is playing lead guitar, and Shawn King Devlin is on the drums. We're playing live in our rehearsal space for a Cable Access show called "30 Go". Here's the entire clip.

Big Dipper North East rock was never so eloquently defined than by the alternative music vehicle known as Big Dipper . I meant this to be a follow-up post on the music from City Gardens Riot on the Dance Floor post but needless to say when a group makes a melodic dent like these guys did it's worth one of my retro-posts because a lot of the submissions I'm getting just don't rank. This is though one of those bands I trekked down to Trenton to see opening up [...]
The Tortoise show at Snake on the Lake started at 3PM in Madison, but Erik, Shawn and I weren't interested in all of the opening acts, so we decided to hit a record store before meeting up with Tom, our taper friend. We stopped at Mad City Music which I've been to a couple of times. The first time Erik and I went there it was for a small Camper Van Beethoven in-store which was really cool. This was a pretty fruitful trip in that I picked up some amazingly pristine copies of Tom Petty albums. Like freakishly [...]
"Let's get this over with." -- Tom, deciding to get the party started after a 47-minute opening music set "Oh, good. Drinking and radio don't mix." -- Julie, approving of Tom's sobriety "I made fun of Mark & Mindy ? You didn't like that? You didn't find my Mark & Mindy joke funny?" -- Tom, inquiring about Jerry from Boulder's rejection of his ribbing "You don't sleep. You don't sleep! Stay haunted! You stay haunted by it! You don't think I'm [...]

The song "Believe" starts out like a classic Dumptruck song from the late 80's. That should come as no surprise since "Believe" is the lead-off track from Dumptruck's leader Seth Tiven. Before label politics destroyed the band (there's a pretty great article here about the bands battles with Big Time Records and Phonograph), Dumptruck had become one of my favorite bands of that entire decade. Their three pivotal albums ( d is for Dumptruck , Positively Dumptuck , and for the Country ) were each in their [...]
