Because... I've been on a hunt of late for the best breakfast meal that restaurants can offer. McDs, Starbucks, Illy's and my neighbourhood breadman have all gone through the fearsome 7.30am examination. What am I testing for, you might ask? Whether these places give free posters of Jessica Rabbit. Nobody's passed so far. Those dense louts. Rainer Maria - Breakfast of Champions (from Look Now Look Again ) Once upon a time, emo was the new loud. Dusty Springfield - Breakfast in Bed [...]
I assume you all know Jacques Brel, one of very, very few songwriters to write in a language other than English to actually be able to penetrate Western cultural awareness. In fact, I read here that Mojo magazine conducted a poll of British and American songwriters in 2000 and apparently Brel's Ne Me Quitte [...]

posted by Matt: Lets face it folks, the romance is over. What once was a steamy romance between me, Andrew and a wordpress account has now faded into the occasional post...and even then, it's out of habit more than anything else. I'm not ready to give up though, I've decided that it's time to really give ol' TFD another shot...so here's my first effort...I've painstakingly gone through the entire internet and found the best songs on the whole thing at the moment. Here's what I found... It's fairly well known [...]
Not surprisingly, Cat Power's smoky Black Session (recorded for the French Inter radio) has me reaching for my old copy of Dusty In Memphis; an album that continues to remain fresh, no matter the context, years after its introduction to my library. Like any album worth its salt, I go through stages in which [...]

Round Like a circle in a spiral Like a wheel within a wheel Never ending or beginning On an ever-spinning reel... Yep, it's Pi Day today. Go forth, eat pie, be merry. Hard 'n Phirm - Pi We kick off the celebrations with pretty much the greatest π song ever, a staple of Pi Day posts for many years to come. Also check out the hilarious Keith Schofield-directed music video , which is where I first heard the song. Hard 'n Phirm - [...]
Friday night I was lucky enough to see Stay Forever: The Life and Music of Dusty Springfield starring Kristen Holly Smith at the Renberg Theatre in Los Angeles. The show has received rave reviews, so much so that it was held over an extra week, if you are in the area I urge you to catch tonight's show before you lose out! Ms. Smith does an amazing job playing Dusty from a young catholic school girl crushing on the nuns to the recording of Dusty In Memphis to her alcoholism and subsequent [...]

So sometimes I update three times a day and sometimes I don't update for three days. At least there aren't enough people who come here to whine about it. I just wanted to share some new Louis XIV, off of their new Slick Dogs and Ponies , which is a fun record featuring everything from creepy stalking tunes to just straight glam-blues rock that makes Louis stand out. If you liked Illegal Tender , you're in store for more goodness. Louis XIV - Sometimes You Just Want To [...]
After a bumpy start, I'm finally continuing the Flashback Friday series. And what better way would there be than to get on with the Pet Shop Boys singles discography? Today, they get a bit of help from a 60s icon! In 1987, the boys released What Have I Done To Deserve This , their duet with Grande Dame Dusty Springfield . The song hit the number 2 spot in the [...]

Quentin Tarantino claims to pick 60% of the music for his movies before the script is even written. Another 20% comes during the writing of the film, and another 20% after the script is complete. (Watch the subtitled version of Pulp Fiction for this and other interesting musical facts about Tarantino.) So without further ado, check out Tarantino's Top Ten Tunes. The top five and mp3s are after the jump. Read an interesting essay about Tarantino's use of music HERE . 10. A Satisfied Mind-Johnny Cash (Kill Bill, Part II) 9. [...]

Merry Christmas to all. If you have kids (or you're just a kid at heart), you can track Santa here . As a holiday gift to everyone, here's a mix of out-of-print and rare soul tracks. They always make for a good party mix regardless of the occasion. Young Holt Trio | Wack Wack (live) Melba Moore | The Magic [...]
Hi folks. I started compiling my favorite songs of the year list (an annual tradition that generally takes me at least a week), and between that and the last Jock Jams installment I almost didn't get to post today's mix. But it's still Monday (11:47 PM, but still Monday.) It's freezing in my apartment and I haven't had any dinner, hence this mix being a little bit edgy and bleak. Still, the guy you're nailing is sure to like it. And, if you like any of the songs, you should go out and buy [...]

The audiovisual connection in art is one that dates back to the earliest forms of entertainment. From the drum circles and chants of the ancient Aztecs that were paired with the extravagant costumes and dance of the tribesmen to when, in 1931 Charlie Chaplin created the score for City Lights all by himself because he wasn't sure who's job it actually was! And even though the earliest films were

Keeping up with the Joneses, that innate desire to always have the latest and greatest really seems to kick in around this time of year. Yes, it's almost the crazy holiday shopping season. What's on your list this year ? iPhone ? XBox 360 ? 42" Flat Screen TV ? Toys with lead-free paint ? Well these songs really have no relation to all of that seasonal madness but here's five that'll have you Jones-ing for more. 1 : Psychedelic Furs - Mr Jones Buy [...]

S orry it's been so long since I've posted anything here. I've been having some storage/download issues. The blog's getting more popular than I expected which couldn't make me happier. Halloween is my favorite times of year and I've got a few tunes to spice up your Halloween parties. Dig these! Dusty Springfield: Spooky You gotta love Dusty's cool delivery on this track from 1968. Originally recorded by Classics IV, I think [...]
Sorry chaps, I've got fuck all in me today. A post just won't pop into my head, and I haven't listened to any of my new music enough yet to feel I have enough understanding of it to pass on. The other thing is that I have my latest podcast swimming around in my head [...]
