Weird music is all the craze these days, ya know? But what does "weird" actually mean, if everything we're listening to is "weird"? Something different? Straying entirely from the mainstream? So then, what becomes the mainstream, at least in indie music? So many questions, I know (and most are questions several of you have been sitting on forever). But don't tell me there is no mainstream in indie, because there is. Indie doesn't mean completely unique. There is an overriding theme to the music, and tastemakers seem to redefine it every other year. I don't have a problem [...]
Eagle Winged Palace doesn't just sound like the '60s — the L.A. quintet sounds like the ghosts of that decade, rattling around in your closet and maybe your consciousness. The folk-noir made by Eric "Cashew" Harding and bandmates is a patchwork of acoustic guitar, spacey keyboards and boy/girl vocals, at times enchanting and at others a bit of a melody-challenged pastiche. The band's debut album "Where We're Coming From" (out last week on Western Crest Records) might be best enjoyed by black light. ||| Download: "Movin' On to Avalon" [...]
Could I just copy the words to The Sun Also Rises, throw in some fresh adjectives and updated references and get it published as the remixed version? Honestly, I'm so tired of remixes. I go through my inbox and see remix after remix after remix. Are you serious? Make your own damned music if you're so talented. And not to be hateful, but I don't even care if you disagree. So, that said, here's what I found that wasn't just someone else's music with a couple of echo effects and a drum loop thrown in: While this [...]
L.A. folk-pop ensemble Eagle Winged Palace is finishing up work on its debut album "Where We're Coming From," and the first taste of the new music is available on their label's fall sampler. "Timber" is constructed of acoustic guitar and fragile, haunting harmonies. The rest of the Park the Van Records sampler includes tracks from the likes of Dr. Dog, the High Strung, the Spinto Band and Generationals. A nice mixture. ||| Download: Eagle Winged Palace's "Timber" ||| Or: Get the entire Park the Van sampler [...]
Dr. Dog has moved on — the Philadelphia popsters announced yesterday that they'd signed with Anti- Records — but Park the Van Records still has a roster full of eclectic distinction, and a couple newbies are hitting the L.A. area in the next few days. Dr. Dog-endorsed Floating Action [left photo], the nom tune of North Carolinan Seth Kauffman, concocts a wild stew of soul, island music and Americana on its arresting, if a bit erratic, self-titled album. New Orleans-based Generationals — the collaboration between ex-Eames Era guys Grant Widmer and [...]
[Let's start Thursday by wishing Kate Bush a happy birthday ...] And let's continue it with with a song off the Sounds' new album, "Crossing the Rubicon": ||| Download: "Dorchester Hotel" The Swedish quintet's Blondie-indebted rock has cast quite a spell on SoCal audiences the past couple of years. Their new album, recorded in L.A., sounds as if it just danced out of the Reagan Administration without being too overbearing. Or maybe nice Swedes just get the benefit of [...]
Kazoos, face-painting, gorgeous vocal harmonies, the sweet lilt of country music and a handful of bands with really long names — the album-release party for Leslie & the Badgers' "Roomful of Smoke" on Tuesday at Spaceland had a little bit of everything. The evening featured harmony-laden opening sets from Eagle Winged Palace and the Chapin Sisters , a fine frolic by Leslie Stevens [above] and her headliners and a twangy exclamation point delivered by closers Olin and the Moon . Photographer Jeff Koga captured some of the fun and shares this gallery: [...]
That rock cliché about smoky vocals took on a whole new meaning when Leslie Stevens and her band were recording their new album. It was 2008, and "the wildfires were raging," Stevens says. "You could see on the hills, there were chunks of ash in the air, and you could smell it in the room." With that faintly apocalyptic backdrop, Leslie & the Badgers' "Roomful of Smoke" was birthed. Produced by David Bianco , who's worked with the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Teenage Fanclub and Tift Merritt, the band's third full-length is an [...]

As you might expect from the title, this is one ungodly clusterfuck of a podcast. It was recorded well into the early hours of the morning with Dylan , Neil and DC who were all in the house by virtue of Homegame being imminent (happening already by the time you hear this) and the Meursault EP being in the final stages of completion. DC stopped by the house on his way to Fife, Neil was around to put CDs into card envelopes and Dylan, er, just likes beer I think. There's was also [...]
This is something of a spectral take on the Gothic folk mini-genre, crammed full of the sort of Brothers Grimm meets the darkest of American folk tales kind of imagery which we've come to expect from this sort of thing. I've pigeonholed it fairly mercilessly there, but I don't mean to imply that you can nail this EP to the mast with a single glib sentence, because there is more to it than that. It's only four songs long and each song has its own character. The first track, Hand of Doom, perhaps fits the above description the [...]
Somebody has deep pockets. The teenage L.A. rock band Acidic won an eBay auction to play a main-stage slot at Sunday's second day of the Bamboozle Left Festival at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre — with a bid of more than $13,000. The money benefits the One Love for Chi Foundation, the charity that is helping Deftones bassist Chi Cheng with his medical expenses as he recovers from a injuries he sustained in an auto accident in November. The Green Day-channeling Acidic, fronted by 16-year-old Michael Gossard, will play at 2 p.m. Sunday, about 16 hours after [...]
