Seldom have the words 'I've got nothing, without you' sounded this heartfelt. And all from a band that seem to have been kicking around for ever (well, 1999 is 4ever for most reading this). Current LP 'System Preferences' is Ariana Murray and Aaron Espinoza's first in almost half a decade and the break hasn't dimmed their recollective nature. '10 Years' only suffers in being too short as it feeds shoegaze chords and ethereal vocals into a bewitching mix. Murray's vocal diagonals towards the end had the hairs on the back of neck swelling, my forefinger did likewise as the effort [...]

Yellow Red Sparks , dynamic guitar/double bass/drums indie folk trio from Los Angeles, fronted by this sprightly young man that is Josh Hanson also happen to be one of the first acts I saw during this year's CMJ. Early afternoon, upstairs at Pianos. Not the easiest crowd to work with, but thanks to some joke cracking, involvling us all in some thirty-second-singalong of 'I Can't Help Falling In Love With You', and, let's not forget the essentials, playfully swaying through their set of 'cinematic' country. Engaging, entertaining, upbeat; so far, they're ticking a far few boxes to stand aside your [...]
These are my 50 favorite songs released in 2012 I submitted them for this year's Contrast Podcast Festive Fifty. We'll see how many show up in the final vote! In spite of the numbering, I like everything from about #15 to the end of the list about equally. This was an excellent music year for me. One of the reasons I stopped blogging was that I no longer wanted to risk legal action by uploading mp3s. Unfortunately, the WordPress version on our poor, neglected site is now too old to [...]

Returning with their 7th album System Preferences is L.A. singer-songwriter duo Earlimart , who remind us of the more forgotten palettes of indie rock, particularly the blander ones. On many levels, Earlimart keeps much in common with another California singer-songwriter project: Sun Kil Moon . Both artists hold nearly the same number of releases, have experienced dramatic highs and lows in their careers, performance ethic and personal lives. Sun Kil Moon 's release this year Among the Leaves [...]
We're playing catch up with last week's new releases. This, therefore, is effectively Vol. II of the Best New Music Releases for the week of Oct. 16th, with new singles from Earlimart, Young Dreams, Shiny Toy Guns, Peace, Matmos, Rosie Flores, Blackbird Blackbird, The Lytics, Harlan, and a number of DIY releases that from everything [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

If you’re asking me, all music is mood music — it just depends on which one you’re going for. Sometime’s its obvious, like Of Monsters and Men’s guitar-driven acoustics for winding down at the end of the day, or Cher Lloyd’s Top 40 shit-pop for a morning boost. But then there are those artists who are a little harder to place — jumping all around the map to build you up and bring you down in 60 minutes or less. If there’s one thing Los Angeles-based outfit Earlimart has proven with their first release in 4 years, System Preferences [...]

With today's physical release of their new album "System Preferences," we get another solid nugget of music from Earlimart . Following up their last single "'97 Heart Attack" and their last live show for a while , Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray's new single "Internet Summer" brims with a palpable energy. Driven by a young, fresh momentum, despite being veterans (and heroes to some) of the local indie rock scene, the duo's songwriting chemistry continues to burn bright. And this time, the fire is fueled by infectious power-pop, ||| Download: "Internet Summer" [...]
Apparently, this is a week for West Coast indie rock pros to throw us old fans some new material. L.A.’s Earlimart release a gorgeous seventh LP, Pinback give us their awesomely idiosyncratic fifth full-length, and Ben Gibbard goes solo full-force for the first time after years of leading a handful of successful collaborations. While I of course love brand new bands breaking onto the stage, I have to admit it’s nice to have a week of new material from some familiar favorites. [...]
Earlimart’s new album, System Preferences, is a glittery and winsome soundtrack to the next indie love story.

Seattle's own The Maldives lead this week's list of new releases. Led by songwriter Jason Dodson, the band has previously performed with nine or more members, is now a lean six-piece with a grittier sound. Our Music Director, Don yates, calls their third album "their sharpest batch to date, ranging from Thin Lizzy-influenced rockers to desolate, country-steeped ballads." The Maldives - Blood on the Highway ( MP3 ) from Muscle for the Wing on Spark and Shine Another local songwriter tops our [...]
Threatening to be a cookie cutter shoegaze band, Earlimart breaks the mold by using...wait for it...emotion. The Ship Records, 2012 6.8 / 10.0 I've gone on and on before about my general distaste for the remnants of the shoegaze movement. Most recently, it took the form of outright vitriol [...]

Earlimart's show on Friday night at the Satellite celebrating its new album "System Preferences" felt like a family reunion, even if some prominent siblings and cousins couldn't make it. Four years have passed since the Aaron Espinoza/Ariana Murray creative alliance released "Hymn and Her." In that time, they have gotten married (though not to each other), become involved in other projects (including Admiral Radley with Jason Lytle and Aaron Burtch of Grandaddy) and watched the Eastside music scene explode. Who knows how many generations of Silver Lake musicians have come and gone since Earlimart decamped to Silver [...]
A fantastic Friday: ► Earlimart celebrates the release of its new album "System Preferences," its seventh and first in four years, with a headlining date at the Satellite, supported by Blake Hazard (of the Submarines ) and Blonde Summer . ► Rodriguez — the rediscovered singer-songwriter who is the subject of the documentary "Searching for Sugar Man" — visits the El Rey Theatre on a night that celebrates the 10-year-anniversary of Light in the Attic Records , the label that re-released his seemingly lost albums from 1969 and [...]
Today's music beat all other music in a fight to the death. Enjoy. : Action Bronson - It's Me : This is a song that features what seems to be a Little Mermaid sample thrown over lyrics that Disney would never ever approve of. I dig it. Way to keep things fresh, AB . This Party Supplies-produced number appears to be a random one, so grab it while you can. : Harlan - 1984 : Here's a nice 80s-enthused track. If you can manage to make it through the chorus with wanting to create some [...]
Some four years and a Jason Lytle-featuring project later, Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray return to Earlimart , ready to follow up 20082s Hymn and Her . With System Preferences , their seventh full-length to date, the Los Angeles based duo crafts midtempo pop that's sometimes folky, sometimes dreamy, but always warmly melodic. Earlimart's lineup trimmed down to a duo just before their last album, though they simultaneously expanded upon their style by exploring new sonic pastures to accompany their familiar style, a trend they've yet to abandon. An electronic undercurrent prevails throughout System Preferences , exemplified [...]
