Given my love for Grandaddy and my total ignorance of Earlimart it has proved annoyingly easy for me to treat this as the next Grandaddy album, rather than the collaboration between the two bands that it actually is. At times the collaboration fails to spark just a little. The first and only time I saw Grandaddy was as the opening band on the first U.S. Coldplay tour. While Coldplay were great (this was before Chris Martin made a career of writing on his hands), the real treat was Grandaddy. Music that was beautiful, filled with soul and passion that mesmerized the audience. MP3 Interpol - Lights Reactions to "Lights" have been understandably mixed, but our first taste of Interpol in three years has me cautiously optimistic. The band's return to Matador after their tepid major label outing also finds the band back in their comfort zone, doing what they do best. "Lights" is a slow burn of a song, more in line with Turn on the Bright Light's atmospherics than Antics' hooks. It's a full two minutes before the beat fully kicks in, giving the ghostly melody and Paul Banks' cryptic, paranoid lyrics room to breathe. [...]
