Austin-bound? No, not me. So I don't know whatever possessed me to start a series of posts based on a fictional four-day schedule for SXSW 2008 that probably no one will look at. But it's like, once I got started I felt kind of duty-bound to finish, even if I'm the only one interested in the idea. The main problem with rock festivals is that all the good stuff gets scheduled at the same time. Look what happens to my schedule at 11:00 PM and midnight. How could I possibly choose between those [...]

"Escape From LA" Thursday March 13th at Antone's and The Lucky Lounge Last year Rock Insider sponsored a few big parties at SXSW - including 2 that wound up being simultaneous (geez louise!). Instead of running around this year like a chicken with it's head cut off this year some friends and I formed the Los Angeles Independent Media Group - a group of Los Angeles focused blogs, labels, and zines who support the DIY lifestyle. We've teamed up with Spaceland Productions [...]

"Just how much distance means we're on our own? And can we be happy, happy alone?" For any FX aficionados, this may sound familiar. Earlimart 's been gracing the teasers for "The Riches" on FX for the past few weeks, and until I connected the two, I was in that position where you're kinda pissed for not knowing what you know, my brain sarcastically proclaiming, "Gee, I really can't recall." Things cleared when they shuffled into play the other day, and that epiphanic minute, that moment of [...]

Happy Valentine's 2008. It's a holiday both loved and hated. No matter what your opinion on February the 14th, there's always a song to encapsulate the way you feel. Of course, some are more cliche than most, and other songs can get pretty specific. I'm sure you'll find something interesting whether you're pro or anti Valentine's. The song for new and naive stages of romance: Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman - Elephant Love Medley (MP3) Ewan:We could be lovers! Nicole: We can't do that. Ewan: We should [...]

My husband says I seem to be listening to more melodic selections, like I'm recovering from some obnoxious affliction that makes me like ugly music, lol. I can say that these are true favorites, not just what I think should be here. I've listened to them over and over, and they have stood up well. Notice that I'm not reposting very many songs that I had posted previously, some quite recently. I am linking to where they can be purchased, by individual song if possible. Here's the second half of my [...]

This blog hasn't given local acts nearly enough shine over the past 12 months, but here's some records from Angeleno bands that I enjoyed. If you're looking for other, probably more informed local lists, I highly recommend checking out You Set the Scene , Rock Insider, and Surfing on Steam's . 10. Sea Wolf- Leaves in the River At times, Leaves In the River [...]

Last week I ended up deleting my entire hard drive. So I lost all of my music & fun images & whatnot. But I prefer not to dwell on it. I'm a survivor . Anyway, this post will be the most jumbled mess of non-related stuff ever. I took the Chinatown bus down to visit my family in Northern Virginia for the next couple of days. I'm not above taking it & have taken it many times before. You just cannot beat $35 round-trip from NYC to [...]

Two great shows to wet your appetite this week in Birmingham start tonight with Earlimart / OFFICE / Through the Sparks and the following night with Man Man / The Extraordinaires / Nowhere Squares . I wish I could make it out to see OFFICE , as you all should know by now that I love this band, but [...]
Opening bands: The Failed Alliance, Office Earlimart | Photo Gallery Though I tend to dislike Philly crowds, Johnny Brenda's has become my new favorite venue... great (local) beer & food, a decent balcony, and clean restrooms are among some of the reasons. My disdain for all-ages crowds has been documented extensively, so JB's offers a haven in Philly where I don't have to deal with kids spitting, acting miserably, or inappropriately moshing. Philly has its fair share of over-21 douchetards, though [...]

For me, this is gonna be a killer week. Wednesday I'm heading up to Asheville to catch Porcupine Tree . Thursday I come back and head a little OTP for Echo Project. Then on Monday I'm heading to Birmingham to catch Earlimart . A few Echo Project details I forgot to cover is that Common got added and that Dubconscious will be playing at the campgrounds Thursday night. As excited as I am about the festival, there happens to be a ridiculous amount of great shows in the Atlanta area this weekend, so [...]
Black Kids, obviously. Of the making of music there is no end, and I for one am glad. Have a great weekend (which doesn't necessarily mean I'm through posting for it: just hoping you have one). Robert Pollard - Rud Fins mp3 - Coast to Coast Carpet of Love is due to drop Tuesday instant. Ta to Toolshed. Do I need to keep saying "former Guided by Voices leader?" Thought not. The Brother Kite - Get

Los Angeles' Earlimart just released their fifth album Mentor Tormentor and are currently on the road to promote, including what I think are their first Canadian dates - if not ever, then in a very long time. I know this because they've been perpetually on the bubble as far as my SxSW schedules have been concerned and never quite made the cut. I've always felt a bit guilty about this and have never had the chance to make it up by seeing them locally, until now. And, [...]

Earlimart put out one of my favorite albums two years ago. They're back and they've done a bang-up job of honing their tight, fuzzed out brand of rock. I read a review recently that referred to these guys as a product of the "Silverlake scene", a reference to the Los Angeles neighborhood in which the band resides and to the other indie rock bands (like Silversun Pickups) with whom they share a zip code. But I disagree. They may be a participant in that "scene" but I believe they're of a different [...]
