Photos and words by Ethan Shvartzman Homecomings tend to be bittersweet; Emily Well's show at the Echo was no exception. Throughout her nearly 2 hour set, the Texas-born multi-instrumentalist one-woman-band-wonder showcased songs from her entire catalog, interspersed with personal stories of their origin and meaning. Emily started the night with a 4-song acoustic set to celebrate the just-released album Mama Acoustic Recordings playing songs such as "Los Angeles" and "Darlin'." In-between songs, Emily began to describe each song as having a place on her "map" (that map mostly [...]

Photos and words by David Benjamin The Brooklyn-based punk quartet, Parquet Courts, played The Echo again, but this time things were different. As if trying to make up for the lack of energy back in January, the crowd was moshing, crowd surfing, dancing and having a great time the entire set; even engulfing an unsuspecting photographer into the chaos. The band responded accordingly and played with the ferocity their fans have come to expect. [View with PicLens]
Arising with an aggressive manifesto, “music to grind, roll & smoke, music to fuck you in the heart” and a hippie-ish name “Peace”, the Birmingham quartet proves to be an interesting amalgam of everything fantastic: watermelon, summer, love, youth, beach, ... Continued

Greek EelctroPop duo Marsheaux have just released their deluxe double CD version of their latest album Inhale via Undo Records . The second CD comes loaded with reMixes including this version of the title track from out old friends Echoes . A band who really should release more stuff. Their reMix of Inhale reminds of everything we love about Echoes, and why we’re missing them (having not released anything if ages). It walks a tightrope between atmospheric and moody SynthPop and bouncy ElectroPop, and Echoes handle these two moods with [...]

Photos and words by Debi Del Grande If you like it loud with some strong beats, you were probably at The Echo for Big Black Delta and Battle Tapes. Never knowing who will accompany Jonathan Bates on stage, he always surrounds himself with talent. Two drummers, a bass guitarist and an occasional brass section took over the tiny venue as Bates made some smooth moves, sang, played guitar and controlled the vibe as the packed house jumped up and down. [...]
A few weeks ago I shared The Echo’s video for their lead single “Responsible.” The video was a beautiful portrayal of the talented ballerina, Francesca Tennant, as she glides her way over the rhythmic beat and warm melody through eloquent dance. While the single’s tranquil groove and musing vocals stand on a solid foundation, it was only a matter of time before it got a rework. Today we have the free download of iO Sounds deep house take on the blissful track. Taking the original down a notch Rob Burn’s aka iO [...]

Photos and words by Scott Sheff UK buzz-band Peace hit The Echo on the heels of their debut album In Love and more than lived up to the hype. With the drummer tucked away in the back and a clean and open stage for the trio of axe men to roam freely, each member hammered away at their strings and rocked every inch of the stage. Particularly impressive was the guitar play of Douglas Castle, and his ability to dip so low on the tips of his toes, yet never touch the ground, and [...]

Photos and words by Debi Del Grande You would have almost thought you were at a FIDLAR gig as the "21+" crowd full of Red Bull-infused drinks were moshing hardcore to DIIV at The Echo last night. I was waiting to see what would happen if they played "Home." The NYC band is tighter than ever with hard-working Zachary Cole Smith making sure the sound was perfect, then letting himself get completely lost on stage. Devin Ruben Perez (bass) and Andrew Bailey (guitar) were finely tuned on "Doust" and "Human." I really wanted to [...]

After shooting the Rolling Stones at Staples Center , I bolted down to the Echo to catch Nightmare Air . It has been a few years since I last saw them at the Echo back in December of 2009 . Co-fronted by Dave Dupuis (Vocals/Guitars) and Swaan Miller (Vocals/Bass) along with the thunderous drumming of Jimmy Lucido, Nightmare Air were even louder than I remembered. It was a storm of feedback and noise floating above a fuzzed out bass lines and syncopated drums. Dupuis's ability to construct walls of noise and sound isn't [...]
Long serving Swedish producer Henrik B makes a long-overdue return to the digital market, this time alongside national peers Niklas Gustavsson and Peter Johansson for Avicii’s LE7ELS imprint with “Echoes.” As premiered on Avicii’s Levels podcast last year, the Swedish trio employs the familiar sample work of The Police’s “Voices Inside My Head” with the utmost effect. An uplifting and radio friendly offering built on extensive melodic stamina and unprecedented production quality, the extended silence of Henrik B is more made amends for in light of this inoffensive tip to the potential for quality peak time dance music [...]

Barely out of their teens, but blessed with a talent that belies their tender years, Wild Swim have – somewhat incredibly – already notched up almost a decade of experience as a band. Richard Sansom (vocals), Carlos Posada (guitar and keyboard), Jacob Lively (bass) and Sam Robinson (drums) have been playing together since they formed at school in Oxford, with Jamie Jay (also guitar and keyboard) joining two years later. “Our first ever gig was at a school concert when we were 11 or 12,” recalls Posada. “That was when Richard was asked [...]

More of Martin's high-res photos from day 2 can be found on his Flickr. Bands of the day: Concrete Knives, Wolf People, Melody’s Echo Chamber Venue of the day: Screenadelica One not-to-be-underestimated benefit of an event being held in Liverpool is the impressive situational architecture. I chose a hotel based entirely on cost and availability, and yet it boasted a fine view of the Mersey estuary and is continuously watched over by that Liver bird which [...]
Sound City 2013 , day 2, began with me waking up to the strains of a Reverend and the Makers ' YouTube playlist blaring out of John's iPad. Mission accomplished from the previous night , I'd say. We headed into the convention portion of the festival and my first stop was a radio pluggers' panel with heavyweights of the radio industry, including 6music's Chris Hawkins, Radio22s Janice Long, and 6music producer Julie Cullen. As a regular BBC Radio music listener, it was really interesting to hear the presenters and producers' takes on [...]

The VPME AELIUS is the name of Caesar Publius Aelius Traianus Hadrianus Buccellanus Augustus, or Hadrian to you and I. It's a pretty apt name for electro-duo Martin Roberts and Lee Tyler to have adopted as their collective musical moniker as they too, like Hadrian of yore, are adept at building huge walls. However unlike the Roman Emperor, AELIUS (the band) use the medium of sound to construct their walls, which is handy given that we are a music blog and not 'The Masonary' Magazine' . Their latest offering 'Echoes [...]

Photos and words by Leslie Kalohi I could write volumes about the complex mission of Man or Astro-Man? as they have explored this planet for almost two decades. Or the fact that my bedroom at my mom’s house still looks like a mini-shrine to the band, complete with posters, a lunchbox/Thermos set, and carefully purchased vinyl from many eBay auctions and mail order catalogs. But, I digress. I have been a big fan of this space-age collective, not just because of the alien mythos or the legendary stage performances or the clever merchandising. [...]

AELIUS is the musical combination of London lads Martin Roberts and Lee Tyler. The utilize both electronic and more organic sounds creating music that builds slowly only to surge at all the right moments. They are prepping for an EP release later this year, but have been releasing loose singles in the meantime. "Echoes" is their latest offering and it brings to mind the best moments of M83 with the skying sounds that occur throughout. The song has our attention and will be on the lookout for more from this promising duo. [...]
