I've been so harried this week I couldn't think of a fun April Fool's joke to play on you this year. In hindsight maybe I should have spent my workday trying to figure out how to convince you that Swan Fungus was acquired by Google. I just clicked the "Send" button to deliver an important [...]

I speed. I park just before 9 p.m., and I arrive at Local 506 just after. Plenty of driving. I'm tired. I just want to see Bill Callahan . I adore this man, his music, and basically all that he is. Easily, I find him about as cool as I have yet been able to deem anyone. I present my membership card and I.D., and I explain that I am there to represent WKNC. "I'm on the list" - only they don't have my name. They don't have any of the names that WKNC sent in. Phone-in [...]
A new 7" label is now up and running, by Black Swans drummer Keith Hanlon. According to Hanlon, the new label Scotio Records will be focusing around experimental/outsider/modern music. I loved the Black Swans' album Don't Blame the Stars and I'm pretty sure the new label will be great. Their first release is a split [...]

--Hey hipsters this isn't 2008 there's nothing "Ironic" about your mustache anymore. This includes pulling your hair over your lip/drawing a mustache on your finger it's been done... the novelties worn off-- . . . After finishing up with the night cruise posts i'm in the mood for some songs where the instrumentation carries the songs a little more than the lyrics. I'm sure as i piece this one together i'll stray a little from that format but that's basically [...]
Ed Askew , is another case of a man with an elite liberal arts education who just couldn't get on in the practical world worth a damn. Despite crafting a truly distinct sound, Askew was never able to get together a serious tour or promote his recordings beyond a small cult following in his native New Haven. Better late than never however, as Askew's rustic torch ballads and bizarre songwriting first saw the light of day again in 2007, thanks to the Sub Pop reissue Little Eyes. Now Askew's music is available for the first time, to my knowledge, on [...]

Sometimes, but not often enough, you hear the first few seconds of a song and fall instantly in love. That's how it was when I heard the first several notes of Deep Water , a cut off the album Imperfiction by Ed Askew . A legendary "outsider" troubadour from the late 60's, Askew didn't surface too frequently in the years following the cult-favorite success of his 1968 LP Ask The Unicorn . Then in 1984, once again equipped with only a harpsichord and a tiple, Askew laid down the ragged, [...]

Thanks to the sterling work of De Stijl we are now familiar with the heartbreaking work of Ed Askew. Here is a choice extract from his biography: "His original musical instrument was the Martin Tipple, which he describeds as a "10-stringed instrument shaped like a baritone ukulele." For several months circa 66-67, he was in a psychedelic folk band called Gandalf And The Motorpickle, who played at the Exit Coffeehouse, which was located in the basement of a Methodist church." Up until recently, the name Ed Askew was known to very few people. Truth is, even for the hard working obscure music finders, his name wasn't known. A classic case of a history missing a true authentic and absolutely amazing singer-songwriter. True, Askew wasn't hard to miss, as he released his first album Ask The Unicorn in [...]
That was a pretty hectic week and I'm glad it was over. That's why I didn't write a lot this week but did make a mixtape. That's because a real man would not run away from his obligation and make a weekly mixtape. Yes, that's what real men do. STR Mixtape : Fancy That (Download) 1. John [...]
I belong to that rare group of people who doesn't like The Beach Boys . There, I said it. And I'm not sure I'm alone with it, I just think there are many out there who won't confess that, as the collective consensus will turn against them, the same consensus that forces humanity to like certain things. Like Ginger, for example. I can't understand how can people eat ginger, nor drink it in a tea. I'd rather have my throat killing me – just don't put that in my mouth. And it wasn't that the Beach Boys [...]

´You never heard such sounds in your life´ was a fitting slogan used by the tiny and daring ESP label to promote its wares. Taking things even further, the company´s motto proclaimed that ´the artists alone decide what you will hear on their ESP-Disk´. With this decidedly non-commercial approach the New York sixties label released many wonderful and always rather weird albums by the Godz, Albert Ayler, The Fugs, Pharoah Sanders and Pearls Before Swine. Though it didn´t put out that many records since the sixties came to a close, ESP still exists and the complete back catalogue [...]
I woke up with a horrible hangover this morning. I decided to go out with friends last night to prove to them that I'm not a total recluse, and I wound up raging pretty hard. We started out night by playing some drinking game with a deck of playing cards that I think I remember hearing about in high school once. I was not very good at it, but it enabled me to drink a few beers in a very short amount of time. We headed out to the bars at about 10:30 and the next 4 hours were kind [...]

ed askew rainy day song 2008 ed askew ask the unicorn 1968 (française version) "the rain was comin' down..." C'est une histoire entre la pluie, Ed Askew et moi. La dernière fois, c'était en novembre dernier, le 14. Il pleuvait. La veille, [...]
Ed Askew: Oh, All The Gold And Green Eyes Today's selection comes to us from Stamford, Connecticut native Ed Askew . This is from his second album, entitled Little Eyes . Love the chord changes on this.

ed askew city of glass 1970 (française version) 18h30. J'extirpe [...]

We haven't had a Used-Bin Bargain here at Audiversity since early May. After several Sundays off where we just couldn't offer an explanation for no content aside from the fact that we were really busy (which we were), we're giving it another go this week with folk singer Ed Askew. Enjoy. Ed Askew - The Garden (ESP-Disk 1968) Ed [...]
